EDD claim ending in January - can I get extension before reapplying?

I've been on unemployment since July after getting laid off from my warehouse job. My current benefit year is set to expire in January 2025 and I still have about $2,100 left on my claim balance. My weekly payments have been coming through normally, but I'm worried about what happens when January hits. I heard some people can get extensions before having to file a whole new claim? I really don't want to deal with the application process again if I can avoid it. My job search hasn't been great - I've had a few interviews but nothing has panned out yet. Does anyone know if I can request an extension now BEFORE my claim expires? Or do I have to use up my entire balance first? Any help would be appreciated!

Seriously? That sucks! So all that money I have left just disappears? I thought they'd at least let me use what's remaining.

The previous comment isn't entirely accurate. While it's true that the pandemic-specific extensions are no longer available, what happens when your benefit year ends depends on your specific situation. Here are the facts: 1. Your benefit year is a 12-month period from when you first filed 2. When your benefit year ends, you MUST file a new claim even if you have a remaining balance 3. Any unused balance from your previous claim won't transfer to a new claim 4. Your new weekly benefit amount will be based on earnings during your new base period I'd recommend certifying for all available weeks up until your benefit year ends to maximize what you can receive from your current claim. Then file a new claim immediately after your benefit year expires.

Thank you for explaining this clearly! Do you know if there's any way to check exactly when my benefit year ends? I think it's mid-January but I'm not 100% sure.

Your benefit year end date should be listed on your UI Online account dashboard. Log in and look for "Benefit Year" - it will show the start and end dates. Make sure you continue to certify every two weeks until that end date to receive all eligible payments from your current claim. One important thing to note: when you file a new claim, you need to have earned enough wages in your new base period to qualify. If you haven't worked since your original claim, you might not qualify for a new claim. In that case, you might be eligible for what's called a Training Extension (TE) if you're in an approved training program.

Wait - so the OP needs to have worked since first applying to get a new claim??? I didnt know that! Im on unemployment too and havent found work yet. Does this mean I wont qualify for a new claim when mine runs out?

@anxiousclaimant Yes, to qualify for a new regular UI claim, you generally need to have earned wages in your base period (typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before filing). If you haven't worked since your last claim, you might not qualify for a new regular claim. In that case, you may want to look into: 1. FED-ED extension (when available during periods of high unemployment) 2. Training Extension (if you're in approved training) 3. Other assistance programs like CalFresh or General Assistance The requirements change periodically, so it's best to check directly with EDD for the most current information.

I've had a few short temporary jobs that paid maybe $3,000 total since my original claim. Would that be enough to qualify for a new claim? The EDD website is so confusing about this stuff.

When my benefit year ended last month, I called EDD to ask similar questions about filing a new claim. Spent TWO DAYS trying to get through!!! Keep getting disconnected or the "too many callers" message. SO FRUSTRATING!!! I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 25 minutes. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep told me I needed to file a new claim even though I had like $1800 left on my old one. She said my temp work might qualify me for a new claim but they'd need to review it. Better to file early than wait till the last minute!

I tried calling EDD 27 times yesterday!!! TWENTY-SEVEN!!! Never got through to anyone. The system is designed to make us give up, I swear. I might check out that service you mentioned because I'm about to lose my mind dealing with these people.

To clear up some confusion here - the rules about qualifying for a new claim after your benefit year ends depend on your earnings during your base period. In California, you need to have earned at least $1,300 in one quarter or $900 in your highest quarter and 1.25 times that amount in total base period earnings. So with $3,000 in earnings since your original claim, it really depends on WHEN you earned it and how it falls into the quarters of your new base period. This is why talking to an EDD rep directly is so important - they can look at your specific case. Also, file your new claim as soon as your benefit year ends - don't wait! There's no automatic extension anymore, and you don't want gaps in your payments.

Wow, thank you for the detailed explanation. I'll definitely make sure to file right when my benefit year ends. I'm pretty sure my $3,000 was all in one quarter when I had that warehouse temp job in March, so maybe I'll qualify. Fingers crossed!

im in the same boat my claim ends Feb 2025 and im freaking out!!! does anyone know if they check work search efforts when u file a new claim?? ive been putting down that i looked for work but honestly havent been trying that hard... will they audit me when i file the new claim??

EDD can conduct random eligibility interviews at any time to verify your work search activities. They typically ask for details about employers you've contacted, positions you've applied for, and networking efforts. I'd recommend keeping a detailed log of all your job search activities and starting to actively look for work if you haven't been. It's not just about qualifying for benefits - the work search requirement is meant to help you find employment.

hey i just rememberd something from when my friend had this happen - if u have like a W2 job for even 1 day during ur benefit year they sometimes put u on whats called a 'conditional payment' status when u refile. they pay u while they check with previous employers. my buddy got payments for like 6 weeks then they stopped when they culdn't verify something. just fyi it might not be smooth sailing when u refile

That's good to know, thanks for the heads up. This whole system is so complicated. I'll make sure to keep some emergency money aside in case there are delays with my new claim.

Based on all the information shared, here's a simple checklist for you, OP: 1. Check your exact benefit year end date on UI Online 2. Continue certifying until that date to use as much of your current claim as possible 3. Gather documentation of your work and earnings since filing your original claim 4. File a new claim immediately after your benefit year ends 5. Be prepared for possible delays in payment during the transition 6. Keep detailed records of your job search activities And remember - EDD rules can change, so it's always best to check their official website or speak with a representative for the most current information specific to your situation.
