Can I extend my NY unemployment benefits or do I need to reapply when they run out?

My unemployment benefits are set to expire in about 3 weeks. I've been receiving regular payments since February after being laid off when my company downsized. Been applying for jobs but the market is tough right now in my field. Anyone know if there's a way to extend benefits once they run out? Or will I need to completely reapply for a new claim? Don't want to have a gap in payments since rent is due on the 1st. Already used up about 22 weeks of benefits. The website isn't clear and I've tried calling but can't get through to anyone who can help.

Unfortunately NY unemployment has a 26-week maximum benefit period (standard UI). After that, you're pretty much done unless there's some special extension program running, which there isn't right now. You'd need to have new employment and then lose it again to qualify for a new claim period.

Dang that's what I was afraid of. Any idea how long I'd need to work before I could qualify again if I find something temporary?

0 coins

You generally need to earn enough in a calendar quarter to establish a new base period - the exact amount depends on your previous wages. But we're talking months not weeks of work usually.

And dont forget you need to lose that job through no fault of your own to qualify again. Quitting or getting fired for cause won't cut it.

I was in the exact same spot a few months ago! Couldn't get through on the phones for WEEKS. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with an actual agent in like 30 mins. The agent was able to explain all my options clearly. Best money I've spent to finally get some answers and peace of mind! Check out their video too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried calling like 45 times today and keep getting disconnected 🤬

0 coins

Yeah it works! I was super skeptical too but was desperate. They basically call for you and wait on hold, then connect you when a real person picks up. Saved me literally hours of frustration.

0 coins

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this besides just this one account? 🧐

0 coins

I used it last month when my claim got randomly frozen. Actually worked - got a person after 3 days of failed attempts on my own. The callback came while I was grocery shopping but I just stepped outside to take it.

To directly answer ur question: there are no benefit extensions in NY right now. The pandemic extensions all ended back in 2021. Once you hit 26 weeks, that's it until you qualify for a new benefit year with new employment.

Look into other assistance while you job search. Food stamps (SNAP), HEAP for utilities, rental assistance programs. Also check if your county has any emergency assistance funds available. Don't wait until you're completely out of money to apply for these!

0 coins

This 💯 - also food banks have really stepped up their game. Some even deliver now if u have transportation issues.

0 coins

Thanks for this. I'll definitely look into these options. My savings are almost gone at this point.

there is actually a way to extend in very specific circumstances. if you enroll in an approved training program you might qualify for something called '599 training benefits' that gives you up to 26 MORE weeks. but you gotta be in an approved training/education program and get it authorized by nysdol.

0 coins

This is the correct answer. 599 program is still active. Check their website for approved training programs.

0 coins

Whoa really? I'll look into this. I've been thinking about taking some coding classes anyway. Maybe this could work out.

0 coins

Don't get too excited. The approval process for 599 can take forever and they're super picky about which programs qualify. But worth a shot!

Hey I was in ur exact situation in September! What actually worked: I had to call the unemployment office EVERY DAY for 2 weeks straight. finally got through to an agent who explained I couldn't extend but they helped me understand when I would qualify for a new claim. The number you need is the claims line not the general help line. Call EXACTLY at 8:01 am when they open.

0 coins

calling at 8:01 is actually bad advice. Everyone does that. Try 10:30am or 2:15pm - less traffic.

0 coins

maybe it varies but morning worked for me after trying afternoon for days🤷‍♂️

The NY unemployment system is such a joke. They make it impossible to reach anyone, the website looks like it was built in 1998, and nobody can give you a straight answer. I spent 4 months fighting to get payments after my benefitsran out. Ended up having to contact my state assembly person to get any help.

0 coins

THIS!!!! 👏👏👏 The whole system is designed to frustrate people so they give up. It's not an accident.

0 coins

Contacting your state rep is actually good advice. Their offices have special contacts at unemployment and can sometimes get things fixed when normal channels fail.

0 coins

No extensions available currently in NY. With that said, here's my comprehensive advice after dealing with the unemployment system for way too long: 1) Apply for other benefits NOW while you still have some UI income - SNAP, HEAP, etc. The applications take time to process! 2) Double-check your benefit calculation. Many people don't realize they've been underpaid. Check if your benefit rate is correct based on your highest quarter earnings. 3) Make sure you're searching for work in multiple ways - not just online applications. Network, do informational interviews, contact temp agencies. 4) If you absolutely need to speak with a claims specialist to understand your options, use Claimyr.com - it's the only reliable way to get through instead of wasting days on hold. 5) If all else fails, contact your state assembly person or senator. They have special channels to unemployment office management. 6) Look into whether you qualify for the 599 training program if you're interested in retraining for a new career. Good luck! The system is frustrating but there are still some options available.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! Really helpful stuff here. I'm going to try contacting my rep and looking into that 599 program right away.

0 coins

Solid advice. I'd add: document EVERY job contact, interview, phone call with unemployment. You never know when they'll audit your work search efforts.

0 coins

maybe u cud try partial unemployment? if u can find even part time work u can still collect some benefits while making up to a certain amount. its not a full extension but better than nothing

0 coins

I went thru this last year. Here's what ended up working for me: 1) applied for partial benefits while working part-time 2) took a training course that qualified for 599 3) claimyr.com to actually TALK to someone when my benefits got messed up. Everything else was just me banging my head against the wall tbh.

0 coins

This is actually smart. Combining partial benefits with training is probably the best approach right now.

0 coins

just commenting to follow this thread cause i'm in the same boat. benefits ending next month and job market is ROUGH 😩

0 coins

same here. what field are you in? maybe we can share leads

0 coins

marketing/content creation. mainly looking in NYC but open to remote

0 coins

I'm in financial services - back office operations. Been applying everywhere but it's crickets out there.

My cousin works for NY unemployment (dont tell her i told u lol). She says there are NO EXTENSIONS available right now and there's nothing in the works politically to add any. The 26 weeks is it, unless you qualify for 599 training which is very specific.

0 coins

Why is no one talking about how messed up it is that NY unemployment only lasts 26 weeks when finding a job can take way longer?? Other states have better systems. NY needs to step up.

0 coins

I think it's actually 26 weeks in most states. A few might have more but that's the standard unemployment insurance design.

0 coins

Maybe, but it's still not enough in this economy. Feels like the system was designed for a different era when people found jobs faster.

0 coins

ive tried every possible way to extend benefits and nothing worked. what DID work was getting thru to an actual person at unemployment who helped me understand my options. spent 3 days calling nonstop with no luck. used claimyr.com and got a callback in like an hour. the lady i talked to was super helpful, explained exactly what I needed to do next.

0 coins

Did they tell you anything useful about extensions or was it basically just confirming there are none?

0 coins

confirmed no regular extensions but she did explain the 599 training option in detail and how to apply. also gave me info on exactly when i could requalify if i found temp work. worth the call just for the clear info!

0 coins

ATTENTION!!! Before your benefits run out completely make SURE you submit your final weekly claim! I missed my last one thinking it didn't matter and then had a huge headache trying to get that last payment. The system doesn't automatically pay you for that final week.

0 coins

I'm in a similar situation with my benefits ending soon. Based on what everyone's saying here, it sounds like the 599 training program might be worth looking into if you're open to learning new skills. I found some info on the NY DOL website about approved training programs - looks like they have partnerships with community colleges and some online programs too. You have to get pre-approval before starting the training though, so definitely don't enroll first and ask questions later. Also seconding what others said about applying for other assistance programs NOW while you still have some income coming in. The food stamp application alone took me 3 weeks to process. Hang in there - this job market is brutal but there are still some safety nets available if you know where to look.

0 coins

Thanks for the detailed info about the 599 program! I'm definitely going to look into this - I've been wanting to update my skills anyway and this could be perfect timing. Do you happen to know if the pre-approval process is complicated? Also appreciate the reminder about applying for other assistance now. I keep putting it off but you're right that it takes time to process.

0 coins

I actually went through the 599 pre-approval process last year. It's not too bad but you need to be prepared with documentation. They want to see your employment history, proof that your previous job skills aren't in demand, and a detailed plan for how the training will help you get reemployed. The approval can take 2-4 weeks so definitely start ASAP if you're interested. Make sure the program you want is on their approved list first - I wasted time researching a coding bootcamp that wasn't eligible. The community college partnerships are usually your safest bet for approval.

0 coins

Just want to add my experience - I was in your exact shoes about 6 months ago when my benefits were about to expire. The harsh reality is that NY doesn't have any regular extensions right now, but I did manage to bridge the gap by combining a few strategies. First, I applied for every other assistance program I could qualify for (SNAP, HEAP, local food banks) which helped reduce my expenses. Second, I found part-time gig work through apps like TaskRabbit and Instacart - you can still collect partial unemployment while earning up to a certain threshold. It's not ideal but it kept some money coming in while I continued my job search. The key is to start applying for these other programs NOW before your UI runs out completely. Also, if you're even remotely interested in learning new skills, definitely look into that 599 training program others mentioned - seems like it could be a real lifeline for people in our situation. The job market is tough but don't lose hope!

0 coins

This is really helpful advice! I hadn't thought about the gig work + partial benefits combination. Quick question - do you know roughly what the earning threshold is before they start reducing your unemployment payments? I've been hesitant to take any temporary work because I was worried it would mess up my benefits completely, but it sounds like there's some wiggle room there. Also good point about starting the other assistance applications now - I keep procrastinating on the paperwork but sounds like I need to just bite the bullet and get it done.

0 coins

I went through this same situation last year and it's super stressful, I feel for you! Unfortunately the reality is NY maxes out at 26 weeks with no regular extensions available right now. But here are the options I found that actually helped: 1) Look into the 599 training program ASAP - you need pre-approval but it can give you up to 26 additional weeks if you're in an approved training program. 2) Apply for partial unemployment if you can find ANY part-time work - you can earn up to about $504/week (varies by your benefit amount) before they start reducing payments. 3) Start other assistance applications NOW - SNAP, HEAP, local emergency rental assistance. These take weeks to process. 4) If you absolutely need to talk to someone at unemployment, don't waste days calling - use a callback service like the ones others mentioned. The phone system is deliberately frustrating. 5) Contact your state assembly person if you hit roadblocks - they have direct contacts at DOL. It's a broken system but you're not out of options yet. The 599 training route might be your best bet if you're open to learning new skills. Hang in there!

0 coins

This is exactly the comprehensive breakdown I needed! I've been so overwhelmed trying to figure out all my options but you've laid it out perfectly. The $504/week threshold for partial benefits is really helpful to know - I was afraid any work would disqualify me completely. I'm definitely going to start the 599 training application process tomorrow and get those other assistance applications submitted this week. It's frustrating that the system is so difficult to navigate but at least there are still some paths forward. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!

0 coins

I'm in almost the same exact situation - my benefits run out in about a month and I'm panicking about what comes next. This thread has been incredibly helpful! I had no idea about the 599 training program and definitely didn't know you could do partial unemployment with gig work. My field (graphic design) has been hit pretty hard so retraining might actually be a smart move. Going to start researching approved programs tomorrow and get those assistance applications going. The whole system seems designed to make you give up but sounds like there are still some options if you know where to look. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - makes me feel less alone in this mess!

0 coins

Hey Kristin, I'm glad this thread helped you too! The graphic design field has definitely been tough lately. When you're looking into the 599 training programs, consider checking if there are any UX/UI design or digital marketing programs on the approved list - those skills seem to be more in demand right now and could be a natural extension of your graphic design background. Also, don't forget to document all your job search activities while you're researching these options - they can still audit your work search requirements even in your last few weeks. You've got this! The fact that you're being proactive about exploring all these options puts you way ahead of where I was when my benefits were about to run out.

0 coins

Hey! I'm actually a graphic designer too and went through this exact situation about 8 months ago. Definitely look into UX/UI programs - that's what I ended up doing through the 599 program and it was honestly a game changer. Got approved for a 12-week bootcamp at a community college and now I'm working as a UX designer making more than I did before! The transition from graphic design isn't as hard as you'd think since you already understand design principles. Just make sure whatever program you pick is on the DOL approved list before you apply. Also pro tip - when you fill out the 599 application, really emphasize how your previous job market has dried up and how the new skills will make you more employable. They want to see that the training is necessary, not just something nice to have. Feel free to DM me if you want more specifics about the application process!

I'm dealing with this same issue right now - benefits ending in 2 weeks and getting nowhere with the phone system. Reading through all these responses has been super eye-opening! Had no clue about the 599 training program or that you could combine partial benefits with gig work. I've been so focused on trying to find a full-time position that I hadn't considered these other strategies. Definitely going to look into approved training programs this week - I work in retail management but honestly been thinking it might be time for a career pivot anyway. Also going to bite the bullet and start those SNAP/HEAP applications everyone keeps mentioning. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - makes this whole situation feel way less hopeless when you realize there are still some options out there if you dig deep enough!

0 coins

Katherine, you're definitely not alone in this! I was in retail management too before my layoff and it's such a tough transition. The 599 training program could be perfect for a career pivot - they actually seem to favor applications from people whose industries have been disrupted. When I applied, I made sure to emphasize how retail management jobs were becoming scarce and how the new skills would open up better opportunities. Also, don't feel bad about applying for SNAP/HEAP - that's literally what those programs are for! The applications seem overwhelming but once you get through the initial paperwork it's pretty straightforward. One thing I wish someone had told me earlier - start keeping detailed records of all your job applications and networking activities now, even in these last two weeks. They can audit your work search at any time and having good documentation saved me a headache later. You've got this! 💪

I'm in the same boat as you - my benefits are ending in about 6 weeks and I've been dreading this moment. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful though! I had absolutely no idea about the 599 training program. I've been working in hospitality management for years but honestly the whole industry feels unstable right now. The idea of using unemployment for retraining while getting extended benefits sounds like it could be exactly what I need to make a career change I've been putting off. Going to start researching approved programs tomorrow - hoping there are some business or project management courses available. Also definitely going to start those other assistance applications this week. It's frustrating how complicated the system is but at least there are still some safety nets if you know how to find them. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - makes this whole situation feel way less scary!

0 coins

Hey Natasha! Hospitality management experience actually translates really well to project management - you already have all the coordination, multitasking, and crisis management skills that are core to PM work. When I was researching the 599 programs, I saw several business administration and project management certificate programs at SUNY schools that were on the approved list. The key thing I learned is to apply for the 599 pre-approval BEFORE your regular benefits run out - there's usually a gap between when your regular UI ends and when the training benefits kick in, so timing matters. Also, since you have 6 weeks left, you're in a better position than most of us were! Use that time to really research which programs align with your career goals and have good job placement rates. The hospitality industry's instability might actually work in your favor for the 599 application - they want to see that retraining is necessary for employment in your area. Start gathering your employment history docs now because the application process requires a lot of paperwork. You've got this! 🙌
