Washington ESD - when my unemployment ends can i apply for new benefits again?

My regular UI benefits are going to run out in about 2 weeks and I'm wondering if there's any way to apply for more unemployment after they end? I've been looking for work but haven't found anything yet. Is there like an extension or can I file a new claim right away? I'm really worried about what happens when the benefits stop.

Unfortunately Washington doesn't have any extensions right now like they did during COVID. Once your benefit year ends, you'd need to qualify for a new claim which means having enough work history and wages in your new base period.

What's a base period? I'm confused about all these terms.

0 coins

Base period is the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. So if you file in January 2025, they look at Oct 2023 - Sept 2024 for wages.

0 coins

You can apply for a new claim after your benefit year expires, but you need to have worked and earned wages since your original claim started. If you haven't worked at all during your current claim, you probably won't qualify for a new one.

I did some gig work for a few months but not sure if that counts?

0 coins

Gig work can count if you paid into the UI system on those earnings. Check your wage records on your Washington ESD account to see what wages are showing up.

I was in the same situation last year. Tried calling Washington ESD like 50 times to ask about reapplying but could never get through. Finally used this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it a scam?

0 coins

It's legit, they just help you get through the phone system when the lines are jammed. Saved me hours of redialing.

0 coins

Thanks I'll check that out. These phone lines are impossible.

0 coins

the system is so broken, they make it impossible to get answers about anything. i've been trying to figure out my options for weeks

0 coins

I feel you. The whole thing is designed to discourage people from getting help.

0 coins

I know it's frustrating but the rules are pretty clear if you can get someone to explain them properly.

0 coins

Wait so what if your benefit year hasn't ended but you ran out of weeks? Like I used up all 26 weeks but my benefit year doesn't expire until March. Can I file a new claim now?

0 coins

No, you have to wait until your benefit year expires. You can't have two active claims at the same time.

0 coins

That makes no sense. So I just get nothing for 4 months?

0 coins

Unfortunately yes, unless you find work and then become unemployed again during that same benefit year. Then you might be able to reopen your claim if you have weeks left.

0 coins

This is all so confusing. How do I even know when my benefit year ends? Is it different from when my benefits run out?

0 coins

Check your determination letter or log into your Washington ESD account. Your benefit year is exactly one year from when you first filed, regardless of when your weekly benefits end.

0 coins

Ok found it, my benefit year ends in April but my benefits will be gone in 2 weeks. So I'm stuck until April?

0 coins

You might want to look into other assistance programs while you wait. DSHS has food assistance and there might be local programs for rent help.

0 coins

Yeah I should probably look into that. This gap is going to be really hard.

0 coins

Check 211 by dialing 2-1-1, they can connect you with local resources

0 coins

I tried to apply for a new claim after mine ended and Washington ESD said I didn't have enough wages. But I worked for 8 months during my claim! Turns out they don't count work you did while collecting benefits the same way.

0 coins

That's not quite right. They do count wages earned while on benefits, but it has to be enough to establish a new claim and the wages have to be in the right quarters.

0 coins

Well they told me I didn't qualify so idk. The whole system is confusing.

0 coins

same boat here, benefits ending soon and no job prospects. this economy is brutal

0 coins

It really is. Feel like I'm applying everywhere and hearing nothing back.

0 coins

Have you been doing your job search activities? Make sure you're keeping good records in case they audit you.

0 coins

One thing to consider is that if you do qualify for a new claim, your weekly benefit amount might be different based on your more recent wages. Could be higher or lower depending on what you earned.

0 coins

I didn't think about that. The gig work I did paid pretty well actually.

0 coins

Yeah it's all based on your highest earning quarter in the base period, so if you had a good quarter it could help.

0 coins

I used Claimyr too when I needed to talk to someone about my claim. Really helpful when you actually need to speak to a human and can't get through normally.

0 coins

I'm definitely going to try it. Spent 3 hours on hold yesterday and got disconnected.

0 coins

The phone system is the worst part of this whole process

0 coins

Also make sure you keep filing your weekly claims until your benefits actually end, even if you're planning ahead. Don't stop filing early or you could lose weeks.

0 coins

Good point, I'll keep filing until they tell me to stop.

0 coins

Yes, and keep doing your job search requirements too. They can audit you anytime during your claim.

0 coins

honestly the whole thing seems designed to push people off benefits as fast as possible. like why can't there be a smoother transition?

0 coins

Because it's funded by employer taxes and they don't want it to be too easy to stay on benefits long term.

0 coins

Still doesn't make it less frustrating when you're trying to survive

0 coins

If you do end up with a gap in benefits, make sure to apply for a new claim as soon as your benefit year ends. Don't wait because there's no retroactive payments.

0 coins

So I should apply on the exact day my benefit year expires?

0 coins

Yes, you can apply the day after your benefit year ends. Set a reminder so you don't forget.

0 coins

What about if you move to another state during the gap? Does that mess up your ability to file a new claim in Washington?

0 coins

You can file in Washington as long as your wages are from Washington employers. But if you move and work in another state, it gets more complicated.

0 coins

Good to know, might be moving for a job opportunity

0 coins

The waiting period between claims is really tough. I ended up picking up some temp work during my gap just to have something coming in.

0 coins

That's not a bad idea. At least it would give me some income and maybe help with qualifying for a new claim.

0 coins

Just make sure any temp work gets reported properly to Washington ESD for wage records.

0 coins

I remember being so stressed about this same thing. The uncertainty is almost worse than just being unemployed.

0 coins

Exactly! Not knowing what comes next is the hardest part.

0 coins

Hang in there, it does work out eventually

0 coins

Just wanted to follow up - definitely try Claimyr if you need to talk to Washington ESD about your options. I used them again last month for a different issue and got connected right away. Much better than the endless busy signals.

0 coins

Thanks for the reminder, I bookmarked their site. Going to try calling them tomorrow.

0 coins

Is there a cost for using Claimyr?

0 coins

There is a fee but it's worth it when you actually need help. Check their website for details.

0 coins

Bottom line is you need to have worked and earned wages since your original claim to qualify for a new one. If you haven't, you'll need to find work first before you can get benefits again.

0 coins

That makes sense. I did work some during my claim so hopefully that's enough.

0 coins

The Washington ESD agent will be able to tell you definitively if your wages qualify when you call or apply.

0 coins

Good luck with everything! The gap between claims is scary but you'll get through it.

0 coins

Thank you everyone for all the helpful info. At least I know what to expect now.
