What happens when your Washington ESD unemployment runs out - need advice
My regular UI benefits are about to expire in two weeks and I'm freaking out. I've been unemployed for 24 weeks now and still haven't found anything stable. I know there used to be extended benefits during COVID but I'm not sure what options exist now when your unemployment runs out. Has anyone been through this recently? What did you do? I'm worried about losing my apartment if I don't figure something out soon.

First thing - check if you qualify for Extended Benefits (EB). Washington sometimes triggers this program when unemployment rates are high enough. Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and see if there's an option to file for EB. It's not automatic, you have to apply.

•I don't see any option for Extended Benefits in my account. Does that mean Washington isn't offering it right now?

Anna Xian
•Probably not triggered currently. EB depends on state unemployment rates meeting federal thresholds. You might want to call Washington ESD to confirm though.

ugh same situation here, benefits ran out last month and i'm screwed. applied for food stamps and medicaid at least. have you looked into that?

•Yeah I applied for SNAP already. Just worried about rent mostly.

•If you're behind on rent, look into the Washington State Rental Assistance Program. There might still be emergency rental assistance available.

I went through this exact thing 6 months ago. The hardest part was actually getting through to Washington ESD to understand my options. I spent literally hours trying to call them every day for a week. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Ended up finding out I could reopen my claim because I had worked briefly between benefit years.

•Wait, you can reopen your claim? I did some gig work for like 3 weeks in December. Would that qualify me for a new benefit year?

Nadia Zaldivar
•Possibly! You need to have earned enough wages in your base period to qualify for a new claim. Definitely worth checking with Washington ESD.

•That Claimyr thing sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

You might be eligible to file a new initial claim if you've worked since your original claim started. Even part-time or temporary work can count toward establishing a new benefit year. The key is whether you earned enough in your new base period (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters).

•How do I figure out if I earned enough? I only made about $1200 from that gig work.

•You need at least $1000 in your base period and earnings in at least two quarters. Washington ESD can calculate this for you when you apply for a new claim.

•Obviously I'm still job searching, but I need to know my options for income in the meantime.

Also check if you qualify for any retraining programs. WorkSource Washington offers some programs that come with financial assistance while you're learning new skills. The WIOA program can help with tuition and living expenses during approved training.

•I looked into this but the waiting lists are really long. Takes months to get approved.

•True, but still worth applying now rather than waiting. Some programs move faster than others.

Been there!! My benefits ran out in October and I was panicking. Turns out I was eligible for a new claim because I had worked during my benefit year. The Washington ESD website is confusing about this - it doesn't clearly explain that working while on benefits can help you qualify for a new claim later.

•This gives me hope! How long did it take to get your new claim processed?

Collins Angel
•About 3 weeks total. Had to go through the whole application process again but it was worth it.

I hate to be negative but honestly when benefits run out you're pretty much on your own unless you qualify for a new claim. The safety net isn't what people think it is. Food stamps help but won't cover rent.

•That's not entirely true. There are emergency assistance programs, utility assistance, rental help. It's just hard to navigate all the different programs.

•Fair point. I guess I'm just frustrated from my own experience trying to find help.

Check with 211 (dial 2-1-1). They have info on all the assistance programs available in Washington. Saved my butt when my benefits ended.

•Good idea, I'll call them tomorrow. Thanks!

Whatever you do, don't just assume you're out of options. I thought I was screwed when my UI ended but turns out I could file a new claim. The problem is getting accurate information from Washington ESD. I ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned to actually talk to an agent who explained my options properly.

•Everyone keeps mentioning Claimyr. Is it legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's real. Just helps you get through to Washington ESD faster instead of calling over and over. Worked for me.

Also look into temporary assistance programs through DSHS. There's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) if you have kids, or Basic Food and Apple Health regardless.

•TANF has strict work requirements though. You have to do WorkFirst activities almost immediately.

•True but it's better than nothing if you qualify.

I'm in week 25 of unemployment and just filed a new claim last week after finding out I could. Had no idea this was possible until someone at WorkSource told me. The Washington ESD website really should make this clearer.

•Did you have to go through the whole job search verification process again?

Peyton Clarke
•Yep, back to keeping a job search log and all that. But hey, it's income again.

Don't forget about the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation... oh wait, that ended forever ago. Nevermind, ignore that.

Rajan Walker
•Yeah all the pandemic programs are long gone. Just regular UI and Extended Benefits now, if EB is triggered.

Look into gig work if you haven't already. Uber, DoorDash, Instacart. Not ideal but it's something while you keep looking for regular employment.

•I've been doing some DoorDash actually. That's where the $1200 came from that I mentioned earlier.

The system is so confusing! I went through this same thing and had to piece together information from like 5 different sources to understand what I could do when benefits ran out. Should not be this hard to get basic information.

•Totally agree. The Washington ESD website has all this info buried in different sections. Why can't they just have a clear 'what happens when benefits end' page?

My cousin went through this and ended up qualifying for a new claim because she had worked part-time during her unemployment. The key thing is you have to actively apply for the new claim - it doesn't automatically happen.

•That's what I'm starting to understand. Sounds like I need to talk to Washington ESD directly to see if I qualify based on my gig work.

•Exactly. And don't let them tell you no without checking thoroughly. Sometimes the first person you talk to doesn't know all the rules.

Whatever you do, don't wait too long to explore your options. I waited 3 weeks after my benefits ended before looking into a new claim and it just made everything more stressful.

•Yeah I'm trying to figure this out now before they actually run out. Thanks everyone for the advice - sounds like my first step is calling Washington ESD to see if I can file a new claim.

•Good luck getting through! That's where Claimyr really helped me. Saved me days of trying to call.
