Will NY unemployment pay remaining BYE days after benefits end?
I was laid off from my restaurant job in April and have been collecting unemployment since May. My benefit year end date shows as April 2024, but I heard ny unemployment benefits are stopping sooner for everyone regardless of their BYE date? I still have about 16 weeks of benefits remaining according to my account. Will I still be able to collect until April, or do they just cut everyone off at some point? The website is so confusing and I can't get through on the phone. Anyone know what happens if you still have benefit days left when they decide to end the program? Do they just disappear or do I get to use them until my actual end date?

From what I understand, the BYE date is just the last day you can claim benefits from that specific claim. If the program ends before your BYE date, then yes, you lose those remaining weeks. The government decides when funding stops - your personal BYE date doesn't matter if they stop the program entirely. Your BYE just means you can't claim AFTER that date even if the program is still running.

Thats so messed up! So I'm just gonna lose 16 weeks of benefits that I earned by working? how is that fair???

welcome to NY unemployment system lol. nothing about it is fair. they take our tax dollars then make it impossible to get benefits when we need them 🤡

I feel you. Unfortunately that's how these programs work. Your benefits aren't like a savings account - they're contingent on the program existing and being funded.

I was in the exact same situation last year. Had like 3 months of benefits left when they ended a special program I was on. After DAYS of trying to reach someone, I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual human at unemployment. The agent confirmed that yes, when a program ends, any remaining benefits just disappear. It's not like rollover minutes on an old phone plan 😭 Getting through to an agent was the best money I've ever spent to finally get a straight answer. Check out this video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for literally weeks to get someone. They connected me within about 45 mins. The agent was able to fix my issue on the spot.

Nah, it's just an automated calling system that waits on hold for you. Before I found them I was literally calling 50+ times a day and never getting through. This saved my sanity.

Just tried claimyr.com yesterday and actually got through! After two months of nothing but busy signals and disconnects. Agent confirmed my last payment is processing now.

Sorry to say but those weeks will be GONE if the program ends. I learned this the hard way with my last claim. Had like 9 weeks left and they just vanished when the extended benefits program ended. Called like 200 times trying to get answers. Such bs.

Did you ever get through to anyone? I've been trying the 888 number for days now...

After like 3 weeks of trying I finally got through. They basically said "tough luck" - the BYE date only matters if the program is still active. If they end the program, your remaining weeks mean nothing.

Here's what you need to know about NY unemployment and BYE dates: The Benefit Year End date is exactly what it sounds like - the last possible date you can claim benefits from your current claim. However, this is assuming the program continues to exist. Unemployment insurance is a program with specific funding and rules. If the program changes or ends, your benefits can absolutely be cut short regardless of how many weeks you have left. What you should do immediately: 1. Document everything in your account now - take screenshots of your remaining balance and weeks 2. Keep certifying weekly as normal until told otherwise 3. Try to get official information in writing about what's happening 4. Consider appealing if your benefits stop unexpectedly Most importantly, you need to speak with an actual DOL representative. The fastest way I've found is using claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold for you and connect you directly to an agent when one is available. This bypasses the endless busy signals and disconnects. The peace of mind from getting a definitive answer from an actual agent is worth it. If you absolutely can't get through, try contacting your state assembly person's office. They sometimes have direct lines to DOL and can advocate for you.

I got cut off 3 weeks before my BYE date when they ended one of the COVID programs. Just stopped getting $ with no explanation. When I finally got through to someone (took forEVER) they basically said "sorry not sorry" 😡 Start looking for work now if ur not already.

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Did they at least give you any notice before cutting you off?

Nope! Just woke up one day and my payment wasn't there. Then checked my account and saw a message saying the program had ended. Super fun surprise 🙃

Omg this happened to me last year! Had like 12 weeks left on my claim and poof - gone! The unemployment website is such garbage, never explains anything clearly. NY unemployment system is a joke.

Your BYE date is meaningless if they stop the program altogether. It's just the maximum possible end date assuming everything else stays the same. It's basically NY unemployment's way of saying "we definitely won't help you after this date, and we might stop helping you way before this date lol good luck"

💯 this. The NY unemployment system is designed to be as confusing as possible so they can deny benefits whenever they want.

Been through this exact thing. Your BYE date is just the MAXIMUM time you could potentially receive benefits, not a guarantee. The whole system is designed to be confusing on purpose.

Is there anything I can do? I really need this money and was counting on having it until April.

Honestly your best bet is to talk to an actual rep. The only way I ever got through was using claimyr.com - they call for you and connect you when someone answers. Otherwise you'll spend weeks trying to get through. My guy cleared everything up in 10 minutes once I actually talked to someone.

this is why i hate the government. they dangle all these benefits in front of us then snatch them away whenever they feel like it. ur BYE date means nothing if they decide to stop the program, its just the LATEST u could collect, not a gurantee u'll get all those weeks.

They did this to me last year! I had 8 weeks left but when the program ended, those weeks just disappeared. I even tried to appeal but they said there was nothing they could do - the funding was gone. The BYE date only matters if the program is still active.

Called literally 50+ times over 3 days. Kept getting busy signals or disconnected. Finally used claimyr.com and got through in about an hour. Agent confirmed what I already knew - when the program ends, your weeks just vanish.

I work in HR and deal with this stuff all the time. Unfortunately, your BYE date is just the maximum possible duration of your claim, not a guarantee. If the program ends or funding runs out, your remaining weeks disappear. It's not fair but that's how it works.

write to your state rep!! they sometimes can help push ur case through. the regular unemployment people don't care but sometimes a state rep office can get answers.

Check if you qualify for any other assistance programs. If unemployment ends, you might be eligible for SNAP benefits or other aid. Don't wait until the money stops coming in to start looking into alternatives.

bruh the whole system is designed to confuse us. BYE dates, effective days, waiting weeks... its all bureaucratic BS to make it harder to get benefits. don't count on those weeks being there if they end the program.

Has anyone been able to talk to a human at DOL recently? I have the same question and have been trying to get through for WEEKS with no luck. Just busy signals or the automated system that doesn't help at all.
