Will my NY unemployment back payment for 7 unclaimed weeks arrive this week after brief review?
So last week I finally got through to a NY unemployment specialist and they told me I had 7 unclaimed weeks that were still claimable from my old claim. They said they certified those weeks for me over the phone and told me the money would take 3-5 business days to reach my account. They also mentioned something about it going through a 'brief review' process first. Has anyone else gone through this before? I'm really counting on this money to catch up on bills - do you think I'll have the payment this week or is the 'brief review' going to delay things? Getting nervous since it's already been 3 days and nothing's showing up in my payment history yet.

same thing happened 2 me last month. took about 8 days total for the $ to show up, not the 3-5 they promised. the 'brief review' isnt always so brief lol

•Ugh, really? 8 days? Did you have to call them again or did it just show up eventually?

The 'brief review' is standard procedure for back-dated certifications, especially when they involve multiple weeks. In my experience working with several claimants, the timeline depends on your specific situation: 1. If your claim was still active or recently expired, it's usually 3-5 business days 2. If they had to reactivate an older claim, it could take 5-7 business days 3. If there were any issues with your original claim, it might take 7-10 business days The good news is that once they've certified those weeks for you, you will definitely get paid - it's just a matter of when. The review is basically making sure there weren't any overlapping employment periods or other eligibility issues during those unclaimed weeks.

•Thank you for explaining! My claim was still active, just hadn't claimed these weeks because I was briefly working (but not enough hours to disqualify). Fingers crossed it'll be on the shorter end of that timeline.

I had 5 unclaimed weeks processed in January and they told me the same 3-5 day timeline. Mine actually came through on day 4, but I've heard others wait longer. When they say "brief review" they're basically just verifying you didn't have other income during those weeks that would reduce your benefit amount. Check your payment history on the website - sometimes it'll show as "pending payment" before it actually hits your account.

•Thanks! I'm checking my payment history obsessively but nothing showing up yet, not even as pending. That's what's making me nervous.

you'll be fine! i went thru this EXACT thing in 2024 and they came thru with everything they promised. NYS is slow but they do actually pay what they owe u

Anyone else SICK of being told "3-5 days" for EVERYTHING?? It's NEVER actually 3-5 days!!! I was told the same thing for back pay last year and ended up waiting almost TWO WEEKS!!! And good luck getting any updates if you call - you'll sit on hold for 3 hours just to be told "it's still processing" 🤬

When I had back weeks processed last month, I actually found a way to get updates without the endless hold times. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they have this system that gets you through to an agent in around 10-15 minutes instead of hours. Cost me a bit but was worth it because I found out my payment was stuck in review and needed additional verification. They actually have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE In my case, the 7 back-dated weeks were being held because I had reported some part-time income during two of those weeks, and they needed to verify the amounts. Once I called and provided that info, the money was in my account two days later.

•Thanks for the tip! If I don't see anything by Friday I might try that service. Did they explain what the "brief review" actually involves?

•Yes, they told me the brief review means different things depending on your claim. For me, it was checking my reported income. For others, it might be verifying you didn't claim benefits elsewhere or weren't working full-time during those weeks. The agent I spoke to was really helpful and could actually see notes on my claim that explained exactly what was happening.

I just went through this in March with 4 unclaimed weeks from last year. Here's my timeline: spoke to agent on a Tuesday, payment showed as pending Friday morning, and money hit my account Monday. So technically 4 business days from certification to bank deposit. Everyone's claim is different though...

One thing I'd recommend is checking your message inbox on the NY unemployment website. Sometimes they'll send you a message if there's an issue with the review or if they need additional information. They don't always call or email to let you know there's a message waiting.

•That's great advice - I just checked and there aren't any messages, but I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks!

not to make u panic but my friend had this happen and then they denied all the weeks after the review saying he shoulda claimed them on time. hope that doesnt happen to u tho

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did he appeal it or anything?

Zara Rashid
•yeah he appealed and eventually got the money but took like 2 months... sorry

•That's unusual unless there was a specific reason for denial. If the agent already certified the weeks for you over the phone, it's very likely they've already verified you're eligible for those weeks. The review is more procedural at this point.

UPDATE: Just got an email that my payment was processed! The payment history now shows all 7 weeks as pending payment. Thanks everyone for your help and advice! Looks like it took exactly 5 business days from when I spoke with the agent.
