"UI Benefits Account Issue on NY DOL Website - Error Message Preventing Access Since Sept 11, 2021"

I just tried logging into my unemployment account on September 11th at 2:13 pm and got this weird error message on the New York State Department of Labor website. The exact error said: "There is an issue with your UI benefits account. Please call the Telephone Claims Center at 1-888-209-8124 during regular business hours. Hearing impaired individuals, who have Telephone Device for the Deaf (TTY/TDD) equipment, may call a relay operator at 1-800-662-1220 and requesting the operator to call 1-888-783-1370. Service at this number will only be provided to callers with TDD equipment." I have no idea what's going on. My last payment came through fine like a week ago. Has anyone else seen this message? I've been trying to call that 1-888-209-8124 number for TWO DAYS STRAIGHT but it just keeps saying all agents are busy. I literally can't check my claim status, see my payment history, or certify for this week. The error appeared on the "Error Information" page after I logged into the NY DOL website at applications.labor.ny.gov. There was just the error message and a "Cancel and Return" button at the bottom, but nothing explaining what the actual issue is with my account. The website header had all the normal navigation options like "COVID-19 Vaccines," "Services," "News," "Government," etc., but I can't access any of my UI information. What am I supposed to do if I can't even talk to someone? Is the system just overloaded because of COVID-19 related claims? Has anyone else run into this specific error message recently and managed to resolve it?

Same thing happend to me last month! I spent literally 4 days trying to call that number. It's impossible to get through. Turns out there was a flag on my account for 'identity verification' that I never got notified about. The system is so broken 😤

did you ever get it resolved? how?? im freaking out cause rent is due soon

0 coins

Yeah eventually. Had to call at exactly 8:00am and still waited for 45 mins. They had to remove the flag manually. Super annoying

0 coins

What's with all these random flags? I swear the system just throws darts at our accounts 🤡

I found a solution after getting the same error! After trying for days to get through on the phone, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically waits on hold for you and then calls you when an actual agent picks up. Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked within minutes - they said it was just a random security check. Best decision ever especially when you're stressing about paying bills! Check out this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds sketchy tbh. does this actually work?

0 coins

Yeah it actually does! I was super doubtful too but when you've been trying to call for days with no luck you get desperate. They just alert you when someone picks up - saved me hours of my life

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol... has anyone ACTUALLY used this?

0 coins

I used it last week! After 3 days of trying to call myself. They got me through to someone in about 2 hours.

0 coins

I was hesistant too but it worked for me. My claim got unlocked the same day. Their whole thing is they just automate the calling and hold time for you.

0 coins

This is usually what happens when there's some verification issue or they suspect fraud. Happened to me when I moved apartments and my address change triggered something in their system. Unfortunately the only solution is to keep calling until you get through. Try calling right at 8am when they open.

Bro the ny unemployment system is SUCH GARBAGE. I got locked out for 3 weeks with that same error. Called 72 times (yes i counted) before someone picked up. Turns out my birthday was entered wrong on one form. Took them 5 mins to fix it once I got through

0 coins

72 times?! I'm only at like 25 calls and ready to throw my phone out the window 😭

lmaooo i was DETERMINED. try calling at weird times like 11:30am or 3:45pm. seems like less people call then

OK SO LISTEN UP EVERYONE WITH THIS ERROR 📣 I work with an advocacy group that helps people navigate unemployment issues in NY. Here's what this specific error means and what you need to do: This error typically appears for one of 4 reasons: 1) Identity verification flag 2) Potential fraud alert (sometimes triggered by logging in from a new device/location) 3) Missing documents or information they need from you 4) Payment processing issue The ONLY way to resolve it is speaking directly with an agent who can see what the specific flag is on your account. Yes, it's frustrating, but keep trying these strategies to get through: - Call exactly at 8:00am when they open - Try Wednesday afternoons which tend to be less busy - Use the claimyr.com service which will wait on hold for you (several people in our group have used this successfully) - Contact your state representative's office - they often have direct lines to DOL DO NOT create a new account or submit a new claim as this will only create more problems! Hope this helps someone. The system is deeply flawed but there are paths through it.

thank you for this!!! I've been panicking all day

0 coins

is the claimyr thing really legit? never heard of it before

0 coins

Yes, several people in our advocacy group have used it. It's just a service that automates the calling and holds your place in the phone queue, then calls you when a real person answers. Saves hours of hold time!

I just wanna say, whoever designed the NY unemployment system probably also designed Dante's circles of hell. That is all.

0 coins

🤣🤣🤣 facts. Special place in hell for them

0 coins

First circle: endless phone menus. Second circle: perpetual hold music. Third circle: getting disconnected after waiting 2 hours

0 coins

don't forget the circle where you finally get through and then they transfer you and you have to start all over 💀

0 coins

Try calling your local state assembly person. I had this exact same issue and was going nowhere with the 1-888 number. Their office has special contacts at unemployment and got my issue fixed in 2 days.

Anyone else notice how these errors always seem to come up when its time to get paid? 🤔 It's like they're looking for any excuse to delay paying us

0 coins

THISSSSS. I swear my account only gets 'issues' the week rent is due 🙄

0 coins

conspiracy theory: they do it on purpose to reduce how much they pay out cuz they know some people will give up

0 coins

idk about that... I think they're just incompetent lol

0 coins

I just went through this last week! Call this number instead: 1-888-783-1370. Less people know about it, and I got through in 20 minutes instead of days of trying the main number.

0 coins

I think that's the TTY number for people with hearing disabilities...

0 coins

oh shoot, i didn't realize. my bad, don't call that one then

0 coins

i kno everyone says try early in the morning but honestly i had better luck calling at 7:55pm right before they close. got through after only 15 min on hold last time

0 coins

This exact thing happened to me. Frustrating AF. Don't waste your time calling directly. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a call back from an agent in about an hour. My issue was that someone had tried to file a claim using my SSN (identity theft). The agent was able to verify me over the phone and restored my access immediately.

0 coins

was urs identity theft too? that's scary

0 coins

Yeah it was. Apparently it's super common right now. The agent told me they've been swamped with fraud cases. She helped me put extra security on my account.

0 coins

This happened to my cousin too. Took him weeks to sort out. Be careful out there everyone.

sometimes I wonder if ny unemployment is running on windows 95 or something... how is their system so bad in 2023? 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

Windows 95? You're being generous... more like DOS on a Commodore 64 💀

0 coins

As someone who works in IT, I can confirm many government systems actually ARE running on tech from the 80s and 90s. COBOL is still used in many unemployment systems

0 coins

i had this happen. turns out my account was HACKED. someone tried to change my direct deposit info. definitely call asap and tell them you need to verify your identity and banking info!

0 coins

omg now im really freaking out. were you able to get it resolved??

0 coins

Yes! But only after I got through to a person. They had to put additional security measures on my account. Check your email spam folder too - they might have sent you alerts

0 coins

tip from someone who used to work at a call center: press 0 repeatedly during the automated menu. sometimes it triggers the system to put you through to an agent faster. not sure if it works with unemployment but worth a try
