NY unemployment account error - "Issue with UI benefits" message and can't reach 1-888-209-8124 phone support to access $1,236 in pending payments
I was checking my claim status yesterday when suddenly got kicked out of my account. When I tried to log back in today, September 13, 2021 around 2:15 pm, I got this weird error message on the New York Department of Labor website. I took a screenshot of it. The exact error message says: "There is an issue with your UI benefits account. Please call the Telephone Claims Center at 1-888-209-8124 during regular business hours. Hearing impaired individuals, who have Telephone Device for the Deaf (TTY/TDD) equipment, may call a relay operator at 1-800-662-1220 and requesting the operator to call 1-888-783-1370. Service at this number will only be provided to callers with TDD equipment." This happened while I was on the applications.labor.ny.gov website, specifically on the "My Online Services" page before it redirected me to the "Error Information" page. The page has the New York State header with links to COVID-19 Vaccines, Services, News, Government, and Department of Labor at the top. I've been trying to call the 1-888-209-8124 number since 8am this morning but can't get through - just endless busy signals or the automated system hangs up on me after saying "high call volume." This is stressing me out since I haven't received my payment for the past 2 weeks and rent is coming up soon. I'm owed about $1,236 in benefits and I absolutely need this money to pay my bills. Has anybody else experienced this type of error message? Any suggestions on how to actually talk to a human being there? The website has a "Cancel and Return" button at the bottom, but clicking it just takes me back to the same error. I'm desperate at this point and have been trying different times of day to call but nothing seems to work. Is this happening because of something COVID-related? I noticed the website has COVID-19 information at the top. Should I try visiting a physical Department of Labor office instead of calling?

I had the exact same issue last month. It's totally infuriating. The only way I got it fixed was by calling literaly 200+ times. Start calling right when they open and keep hitting redial. I finally got through after 3 days of trying.

•Yea it was awful. Had to put my phone on speaker and just keep redialing while I did other stuff. The system is completely broken.

•3 days is actually pretty quick tbh. I know people who've been trying for weeks with no luck.

After getting this same error and wasting days trying to call them, I found this service called claimyr.com that basically calls them for you and connects you when they get a real person. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked in like 20 minutes once I was connected. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for days on my own. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Does this actually work? Seems too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at ny unemployment...

•Yeah it worked for me! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for almost a week. They got me connected in about 2 hours.

•sounds like another scam trying to prey on desperate people 🙄

•Not a scam at all! I was in the same boat as OP with that exact error. They just automate the calling process, which saved me from having to call hundreds of times myself.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? cuz I'm about ready to throw my phone out the window after calling for 3 days straight

•It worked for me! They just keep calling until they get through, then connect you. Saved me days of frustration and got my benefits flowing again.

This happened to me about 6 weeks ago. They froze my account because someone tried to file a claim using my info in another state. Took FOREVER to sort out. Start calling as soon as they open and keep trying.

•Wow that's scary...how did you eventually get it fixed? Did you have to provide additional verification?

•Yeah had to send in copies of my ID, soc security card, and do a video interview. Took about 3 weeks total to get everything straight and payments flowing again.

The whole ny unemployment system is a complete joke. This same error happens to like everyone. They design it to be impossible to reach them so people just give up. It's all by design.

I've been a UI specialist for 7 years and I'm seeing this error more and more lately. Here's what's probably happening and what you need to do about it: This specific error message usually indicates one of four things: 1. Identity verification flag - Someone may have attempted to access your account or there were multiple failed login attempts 2. Potential overpayment issue that needs to be addressed 3. Quarterly wage review that flagged inconsistencies 4. Cross-state claim conflict (someone using your info in another state) What you need to do: First, document everything. Take screenshots of any error messages. Write down dates and times you've tried to call. Second, prepare your verification documents before calling: ID, social security card, recent pay stubs or W2s, and any UI correspondence you've received. Third, try alternative contact methods while also continuing to call. Email is actually monitored (though responses can take 1-2 weeks). Try: labor.sm.unemployment@labor.ny.gov If you're desperate to get through by phone, I've had clients use claimyr.com to bypass the hold times. It's been effective for many people in your situation. Finally, contact your state representative. They often have dedicated channels to UI offices and can escalate cases. Good luck! The system is definitely overwhelmed right now.

•Thank you so much for this detailed response! I'll try emailing them right away. Is the claimyr service really worth it?

•From what I've seen with clients, yes. Most get through within a few hours versus days or weeks of trying on their own. The time saved is usually worth it when benefits are on the line.

•I'm having the same issue but got locked out after answering security questions wrong. will these steps still work for me?

•Yes, but you'll definitely need to verify your identity when you speak with them. Make sure you have multiple forms of ID ready. The security question lockout adds another layer of verification they'll need to clear.

ive gotten this error 3 times in the past year. Each time its something different. Once was identity verification, once was a "system glitch" and once was because they needed additional work history. Its a generic error that tells you nothing useful 🤬

Contact your state assembly person!!! This was the ONLY thing that worked for me after getting this same error and trying to call for weeks. Google your district rep and email their office explaining your situation. Mine contacted DOL and got it fixed in 48 hours.

•This!! Assembly reps have special contacts at unemployment. mine got my issue fixed in 3 days after I tried calling for 2 weeks straight.

•Oh wow that's a good idea, I didn't even think about contacting my rep. I'll try that today!

Might be identity theft. A friend got the same error and it turned out someone was trying to use her info to claim benefits in Pennsylvania while she was getting NY unemployment. Definitely keep calling til you get through.

Camila Jordan
•That's terrifying. Did she have to file a police report or anything?

Alice Fleming
•Ya she had to file police report, contact credit bureaus, provide all kinds of extra documentation. Took like 2 months to get her benefits back. The whole thing was a nightmare.

try calling at exactly 7:58am - thats how i got through. Their system starts taking calls at 8 but if you call 2 minutes before you can get in the queue before everyone else.

Ugh that error is the worst! I literally had to use claimyr.com after trying for 8 days straight with no luck. Best money I ever spent to finally get my benefits paid. Otherwise i would've been evicted no joke.

•How long did it take for them to connect you with someone?

•They got me through in about 90 minutes. Was way faster than I expected considering I couldn't get through at all on my own.

This is gonna sound weird but try calling the TTY/TDD number they gave you. It's usually less busy and they'll still help you even if you don't have the special equipment. Worked for me when I couldn't get through on the main line.

•Dude that's actually kinda messed up. Those lines are for people with hearing disabilities. Please don't clog them up because you're impatient.

Anyone else notice these errors always happen around the same time every quarter? I swear ny unemployment is just randomly flagging accounts to reduce their workload.
0 coins
Sarah Ali
•Yes! I've noticed this too. I think they do "sweeps" at the end of each quarter to catch fraud but they end up flagging tons of legitimate accounts too.

you should check your credit report ASAP. when this happened to me it was because someone stole my identity and was trying to claim in multiple states.

Y'all this is crazy but I got through by calling my LOCAL unemployment office instead of the main number. The main 888 number is almost impossible but my county office picked up after only 20 mins on hold.

Camila Jordan
•I didn't even know local offices could help with this! How did you find your local number?

Avery Saint
•Just google "[your county] ny unemployment office" - they technically aren't supposed to handle claims directly but a nice person there helped me anyway.

Something similar happened to me in July. They needed to verify my identity again because of "suspicious activity" even though I'd already verified it twice before. The whole system is just broken af.
