They're cutting my NY unemployment benefits early - is this happening to anyone else?

I just got approved for unemployment after a long wait. My benefit period is supposed to run from 6/21/2022 to 6/18/2023, but when I logged in today, it shows my benefits are ending in November! Has anyone else had their benefits cut short? This makes no sense - I haven't even received benefits for half the time I'm supposed to. I spent months waiting for approval, and now they're just going to stop paying in a couple months? Is this happening to everyone or just me? I really need this money to keep afloat until I find something permanent.

yeah same happened to me! my benefits were supposed to last till may 2023 but they're stopping in december. i called and the rep said something about federal extensions ending. didnt make any sense to me since my regular claim should be good for the full year. ny unemployment is such a mess 🤦‍♂️

They're always giving different answers too. I called twice and got completely different explanations from each person.

Did they tell you if theres any way to appeal this? I cant survive without these payments

0 coins

nope, they basically just said 'thats how it is now' with no real explanation. typical nysdol BS

When I had a similar issue last month, I was going CRAZY trying to get through to someone at unemployment. After like 2 weeks of trying I found this service called claimyr.com that got me a callback with an actual agent. Talking to the agent got my benefits issue fixed in one call. Best money I've spent to get my benefits flowing again! Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

hmm sounds like one of those too-good-to-be-true things. Did it actually work? unemployment never calls anyone back in my experience 🙄

0 coins

Yeah it actually worked! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate. They don't call you - they call unemployment and wait on hold, then when a real person picks up they connect you. Saved me like 4 hours of hold music lol

0 coins

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? been trying to talk to ny unemployment for WEEKS

0 coins

100% worked for me. You can check out the youtube link I posted to see what it is. They're legit - it's just a service that waits on hold for you.

I'm pretty sure this is happening to everyone because of the federal programs ending. But your regular UI benefits shouldn't be affected if you have a valid claim for the full year. You need to check if maybe they put you on one of the pandemic extensions by mistake instead of regular UI.

WELCOME TO NY UNEMPLOYMENT WHERE THE RULES ARE MADE UP AND YOUR BENEFIT YEAR DOESN'T MATTER 🤡🤡🤡

lmaoooo this is so accurate it hurts 😂

I read this in Drew Carey's voice!

Here's what's actually happening with NY unemployment right now: A lot of people are seeing their benefits end early due to system updates and changes in eligibility rules. It's not just you. The key is to get someone on the phone who can review your specific case. I was in the exact same situation last month - approved for benefits through July 2023 but system showed them ending in January. What worked for me: 1. Gather all your approval documents showing your correct benefit year 2. Take screenshots of your online account showing the discrepancy 3. Try calling first thing Monday morning (7:30am) for shortest wait times 4. If you can't get through, use claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold and get you connected to a live agent (saved me hours of frustration) 5. Politely but firmly ask the agent to review your benefit year dates In my case, it was a system error they could fix on the spot. The agent confirmed my original benefit year was correct and restored my full timeline. Don't give up - this is fixable! But you MUST speak to someone directly.

Thank you so much for this detailed info! I've been freaking out all week. Gonna try calling first thing Monday morning.

Is that claimyr thing worth it? I've spent like 8 hours on hold this week 😡

0 coins

Definitely worth it for me. I have a job interview I couldn't miss and needed to get this fixed. The time saved was priceless and they got my benefits back on track.

This is NOT supposed to happen. Your benefit year is exactly that - a YEAR. Contact your state representative asap. I had to do this when ny unemployment cut me off early and my rep's office got it fixed in 2 days.

How do I find my state rep's contact info? Never done this before

0 coins

Google "ny state assembly find my representative" - put in your address and it'll show you. Email AND call them. They deal with unemployment issues all the time.

i feel ya. been there done that. they keep changing the rules and dont even bother telling anyone. my advice: call call call until u get someone who actually knows what theyre doing. some agents are clueless af and others are super helpful.took me 7 calls to reach someone who fixed my issue.

Check your mail/email VERY carefully. They probably sent you some notice about this that you missed. They love to make major changes and then claim they told you about it in some obscure letter.

0 coins

I've been checking everything! Nothing in my inbox or spam folder explaining this.

0 coins

Check your online account message center too. And sometimes they only send physical mail for important stuff (which is ridiculous in 2022 but that's NY unemployment for ya

This happened to my cousin last week. Turns out they had erroneously classified him under some weird category that was ending. He finally got through to someone using that claimyr service and got it straightened out. They corrected his claim type and restored his full benefit year.

Question - when you look at your payment history, does it show regular UI or does it have some other code? Might give a clue about what type of benefits they've been paying you.

0 coins

It just says UI, which is why I'm so confused! I thought UI was supposed to last the full year?

0 coins

Yeah that's definitely wrong then. Regular UI should be your full benefit year. Sounds like a system error you need to get fixed ASAP.

Classic ny unemployment system fail. They're probably doing some computer update and screwing up everyone's dates. I swear their system runs on Windows 95 and duct tape.

0 coins

Windows 95? you're giving them too much credit...it's probably running on punch cards and an abacus 💀

0 coins

I heard they still use COBOL programming from the 1970s no joke

0 coins

lmaooo and they probably have ONE guy who knows how to fix it and he's about to retire

0 coins

Two words: CONTACT OMBUDSMAN. The ny unemployment ombudsman office can fix benefit year issues. Google their number. They helped me when I had a similar problem last year.

0 coins

Have you tried logging out and back in again? Sometimes their system glitches and shows incorrect dates. I had a mini heart attack last month when mine showed $0 balance but it was just a display error.

0 coins

Tried that like 5 times and even cleared cache/cookies. Still showing the same wrong end date 😞

0 coins

anyone else feel like the system is DESIGNED to be confusing so people just give up? like they're hoping we'll get frustrated and stop claiming? 🧐

0 coins

1000% this. it's all about deterrence. make it so complicated and broken that people throw up their hands and walk away.

0 coins

Sad but true. My friend who works in govt (not unemployment) says they call it 'administrative burden' - basically creating so much red tape that people abandon valid claims

0 coins

They save millions by frustrating ppl out of benefits they're legally entitled to
