EDD says 'benefits payable to you at this time' exhausted - any options left?

So I just got hit with that dreaded message when I tried to certify: "You have received all benefits payable to you at this time. You cannot file another California Unemployment Insurance claim until your current benefit year ends." I still have 4 months before my benefit year ends (May 2025) and I'm freaking out because I've been on interviews but nothing's coming through yet. Construction work is just dead right now in my area. I thought I had like $3,200 left in my claim balance last time I checked?? Did I miscalculate something? I've been on unemployment for about 8 months total but with some periods of temp work in between. Has anyone dealt with this before? Are there ANY options or extensions available in 2025? Or am I just completely screwed until my benefit year ends?

Unfortunately that message means you've exhausted your maximum benefit amount for this claim year. It doesn't matter how much time is left before your benefit year ends - once you've collected your maximum benefit amount, that's it until your benefit year expires and you can file a new claim. Have you looked into CalFresh for food assistance? Also check out your local workforce development center - they might have retraining programs or job placement services that can help. The EDD website has a section on "Additional Assistance" that lists resources for when benefits are exhausted.

Thanks for the info... ugh this sucks. I didn't realize there was a maximum amount separate from the benefit year timeframe. I'll definitely look into CalFresh. Do you know if I need to wait until exactly when my benefit year ends to file a new claim, or can I start the process a bit before?

Same thing happened 2 me last yr... benefit yr wasnt over but they cut me off saying benefits exhausted. I tried 2 appeal but they said no dice. Benefit amounts r calculated when u first file & once they're gone, ur done til next benefit yr. EDD customer service was USELESS when i called, just repeated the same thing. You could try 2 see if ur eligible 4 state disability or paid family leave if u qualify w/ medical reasons, but otherwise ur prob stuck waiting until May.

Not trying to be rude but SDI and PFL are completely different programs with different eligibility requirements than UI. You can't just switch to them because UI ran out. You need an actual disability certified by a doctor for SDI or a qualifying family care need for PFL. Giving false hope isn't helpful.

When you first file for unemployment, EDD calculates your maximum benefit amount based on your highest quarter of earnings in the base period. This is typically 26 weeks worth of benefits at your weekly benefit amount. If you collected partial benefits during weeks you worked part-time, that stretches out how long your claim lasts, but the total dollar amount remains the same. What you're experiencing is completely normal, though definitely stressful. There are currently no federal extensions available like there were during COVID. Your options are: 1. Continue job searching while finding other support programs (CalFresh, CalWORKs if you have kids, local food banks) 2. Look into retraining programs through your local America's Job Center 3. See if you qualify for any specialized programs based on your industry or circumstances Once your benefit year ends in May, you can file a new claim IF you've worked and earned enough wages in the meantime to establish a new claim.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I didn't understand how the benefit amount was calculated. I did work about 6 weeks of temp jobs during my claim, so I guess that's why it lasted 8 months instead of 6. This is really rough timing with rent due next week. I'll check out the CalFresh option today.

the whole system is DESIGNED to leave people hanging!! they give you JUST enough to survive but cut you off before you can get back on your feet. i got the same message last year and ended up having to move back with my parents at 42 years old. its humiliating. meanwhile these politicians are living fat while we're struggling just to eat. the whole system needs to be burned down and rebuilt!!

I understand your frustration, but let's try to offer some constructive advice here. OP needs practical solutions, not just venting (though I totally get the need to vent too!).

Hey so when I got this message in November I called EDD to double check if there was anything I could do. I spent THREE DAYS trying to get through - hundreds of calls with that stupid "we're experiencing high call volume" message! I was about to give up when I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an EDD rep in about 45 minutes. They have this demonstration video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD agent confirmed what others are saying - once your benefit amount is exhausted, that's it until your benefit year ends. BUT they did help me understand exactly when I could refile and gave me info about other programs I qualified for. Worth checking out if you want to speak to someone directly at EDD.

Thanks for the tip about Claimyr. I might try that because I've been calling EDD for 2 days with no luck. At this point I just want to know if there's anything else I can do or at least understand exactly when I can file again.

Yeah January is always slow but this year is worse than usual. I've applied to some government projects but those usually take longer to process applications. Amazon is a good idea for stopgap work - I'll check their listings tonight. Thanks for the suggestions!

I want to clarify something important: Even though you can't collect more benefits now, you should CONTINUE CERTIFYING each week if the system still allows you to. This creates a record of your continued unemployment that may be relevant for other programs or if any extensions become available (though none are currently offered). Also, you mentioned having $3,200 left in your claim balance - that's actually impossible if you received the "all benefits payable" message. The system would never cut you off with a remaining balance. It's more likely you misinterpreted something else on your account page. Look into 211.org for local emergency assistance programs. Many counties have rental assistance and utility payment help for situations exactly like yours. Don't wait until you're behind on payments to apply! Finally, make sure you're registered with CalJOBS. Some EDD offices are offering special workshops for people who've exhausted benefits.

Thank you - I'll check if I can still certify. You're probably right about the balance. Maybe what I saw was the original claim amount and not what was left? The 211 resource sounds helpful too, I'll definitely check that out. Really appreciate the advice.

just wanted to add that I was in your situation last year and it SUCKS but it's not forever. I picked up gig work delivering food for a couple months until my benefit year ended. Then I filed a new claim and got approved again because I had enough wages from before my first claim. Hang in there!
