Specialist had to cancel my new claim to release back pay for my ny unemployment
Finally got through to someone who could help me with my payments issue. Had a call with a rep today who explained they needed to 'invalidate' my claim from 10/11 to free up the back payments from 7/15 to 10/2. Apparently this is the only way to get those older payments processed. She said after my backpay gets processed, they'll reinstate my newer claim. Just a heads up to anyone in a similar situation - the specialist mentioned I should expect to wait around 12 weeks for the new claim to be processed once they reinstate it. The unemployment system is so confusing sometimes.

same EXACT thing happened to me last month! The rep had to 'delete' my new claim (her words) to get the system to process my old payments. took about 3 days to see the money in my account, but then I had to wait almost 2 months for the new claim to get going again. the computer systems they use must be from the stone age!

•OMG thats so helpful to know! Did you have to call them again to get the new claim reactivated or did they actually do it automatically like they promised?

•they did it automatically! but I did keep checking my account every day lol. the new claim showed as 'pending' for like 6 weeks before it switched to active.

After weeks of trying to reach someone at ny unemployment with no success, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me connected with an actual human in less than 2 hours and the agent fixed my backpay issue on the spot. Talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast - best decision I made during this whole unemployment nightmare. They have a youtube video explaining how it works too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•That sounds too good to be true. Does it actually work? I've been trying to get through for weeks.

•100% worked for me. I was super skeptical at first but I was desperate after trying to call for 3 weeks straight. Got connected to a rep who knew exactly what to do with my claim.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch - they just call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when a real person answers. Saved me hours of listening to that awful hold music.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? been trying to get through for my cousin who cant get ANY of her payments.

•It worked for me and like 5 people from my old job. We all got laid off at the same time and were all stuck in unemployment hell. Worth every penny to get our claims moving.

The unemployment system is a total mess rn. My friend went thru similar issues where they basically broke her old claim to fix her new one. Makes zero sense. Try calling super early - like 7:55am right before they open. Thats how I got through.

This is why I ALWAYS tell people to screenshot EVERYTHING from their account. The system is so broken that you need proof of everything. Had similar issues where they had to mess with my claim dates to get payments. Take screenshots of your payment history, claim status, everything!

•THIS!!!! I had an issue where they said I never filed a claim but I had screenshots proving I did. Saved my butt.

•Great advice, I'm going to start doing this now. My anxiety has been through the roof dealing with this whole situation.

I've dealt with the NY unemployment system for over 20 years as part of my job (financial counselor). What happens is that their outdated computer system cannot process overlapping claims. When a new claim starts before an old one is fully paid out, it creates a system conflict. The solution is exactly what your specialist did - they have to temporarily invalidate the newer claim, process all backpay from the older claim, then reinstate the newer one. Unfortunately, when they reinstate the newer claim, it goes into the processing queue as if it were brand new, hence the long wait time. If you need to speak with someone and can't get through on the phone lines, I highly recommend using claimyr.com - many of my clients have had success with this service to connect with agents quickly. It's especially useful for complex cases like yours where you need a knowledgeable specialist. Some other tips: - Keep detailed records of all your communications - Use the secure message system in your online account to document your issues - Be very specific about your claim dates when speaking with representatives - Follow up weekly if your claim seems stuck - Check your payment history page daily for updates The system is frustrating but persistence pays off!

•Thank you SO much for this detailed info! It helps to understand why they have to do things this way even if it seems crazy. I'll definitely check out that service if I need to talk to someone again.

•not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

•It's not a hack - it's just a call service. I've been helping people navigate unemployment for decades and getting through to an actual person is always the biggest hurdle. When something works, I recommend it.

Your specialist actually knew what they were doing?! 😱 I've called 8 times and gotten 8 different answers about my similar situation. One told me to just 'start over' with a new claim (terrible advice). Gonna try again tomorrow.

The whole system is designed to make you give up. Its literally built to frustrate people so much that they stop pursuing their benefits. dont let them win! keep calling, keep fighting for what you earned.

•This is so true. My brother just gave up after 2 months of fighting the system and went back to a job he hates making way less 😢

•Thats exactly what they want. The fewer claims they have to pay out, the better their budget looks. Its an absolute disgrace how they treat people.

has anyone else noticed that the website always seems to have 'technical difficulties' right when you need to certify? 🤔 like clockwork every sunday morning for me...

Connor Murphy
•YESSS! I've had to set an alarm for 2am Monday to certify because the site crashes from like 7am-1pm on Sundays. So annoying.

I was in the same boat last summer. Took them 15 weeks to fix my claim after they 'invalidated' it. Just prepare yourself mentally for the wait. The backpay will come in a lump sum tho, which was nice. I just wish they'd update their ancient systems.

Sounds similar to what happened to me but I was waiting for effective date pay vs backpay. My claim started in December but was effective from October. Had to get a specialist who knew how to fix it too. They're the only ones with access to make those changes apparently.

•Did they give you any timeline for when those payments came through after they fixed it?

•Took about 3 weeks for all of it to process. Some payments came through right away, others took longer. Its always a mystery how they decide the order lol

anyone else notice that since they updated the website last month, EVERYTHING takes twice as long?? i swear they make these 'improvements' just to slow down the payment process 🙄

•Their idea of an upgrade is making it even harder to use! Remember when they took the system offline for a whole weekend to 'improve' it and it came back WORSE?

•the new system is absolute garbage. took me 45 mins just to complete my weekly certification when it used to take 5 mins max.

how did you even get a specialist on the phone? ive been calling for 2 weeks and either get disconnected or talk to someone who clearly has no idea what theyre doing.

i work in IT and i can tell you NY's unemployment system is running on COBOL - a programming language from the 1950s!!! no wonder they have to do weird workarounds like 'invalidating' claims. the whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch.
0 coins
Emma Thompson
•my uncle said the same thing! apparently they can't find enough programmers who know these ancient languages to even maintain the system properly.
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•Exactly. COBOL programmers are mostly retired now. And government pay can't compete with private sector to attract the few who remain. Recipe for disaster.

the backpay sitch with ny unemployment is wild. my cousin had to wait 6 months for his backdated payments from when the system crashed last year. be prepared to wait, but at least it sounds like you got someone who knows what they're doing!

One thing I learned from my nightmare with unemployment: WRITE DOWN NAMES AND ID NUMBERS of every person you talk to!!! I had one agent tell me they fixed my claim, but they didn't. When I called back, no record of the call existed. Always always get their ID number.

•omg yes. I write everything down now in a notebook dedicated just to this nightmare. dates, times, names, what they said, what they promised, EVERYTHING.
