Got old NY unemployment payments - is processing time different than weekly claims?

Finally got through to NY unemployment and received my 2 backpayments that were pending! Actually managed to connect with agents multiple times after weeks of trying... quick question though - is the processing time for these backpayments the same as when you claim weekly benefits? My regular weekly claims usually hit my account in 2 days, but I'm wondering if these older payments might take longer to process? Anyone know?

Congrats on getting through! The processing time for backdated payments is usually 3-5 business days compared to the 1-2 days for regular weekly claims. The system handles them differently because they go through an additional verification step. Sometimes they can arrive together though, so check your payment history on your account to see if they've been released yet.

Months?? Wow, that's rough. Did you have to keep calling or did they eventually process it automatically?

Hi there! When I got my backdated payments in January 2025, they took about 4 business days to hit my account. The agent specifically told me they would take longer than regular weekly claims. One thing you can do is check your payment status in your online account - if it says

That's really helpful, thank you! I'll check my payment status right now. The agent didn't mention anything about different processing times when I spoke with them.

Back payments take forever sometimes. The system is so messed up honestly. My brother waited 3 weeks for his back payments but his regular claims were coming through fine the whole time. Makes no sense.

Unfortunately, backdated payments go through a separate processing queue than regular weekly certifications. It definitely creates confusion, but it's because they require additional verification steps.

I had the same question last month! My experience was that regular weekly claims hit my account in 1-2 days, while my back payments took 4 business days. The agent explained that backdated payments go through additional verification steps.\n\nBy the way, how did you finally get through to them? I spent over a week trying to call before I finally got through.

I literally just kept hitting redial for hours... it was exhausting. Took me about 3 days of trying on and off before I finally got connected. What about you?

After trying to get through for weeks with no luck, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 35 minutes. They have a service that helps you skip the phone queue. Literally saved me days of frustration trying to get my back payments sorted out. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE\n\nIt was totally worth it after I wasted so much time trying to call on my own. Just sharing because I wish I'd known about it earlier!

Is that actually legit? Seems kinda sketchy that you can pay to skip ahead of everyone else waiting...

It's definitely legit. They don't actually let you skip the line - they just have technology that keeps redialing for you until they get through, then they connect you. Saved me so much time and frustration.

Wish I'd known about this before spending days redialing! Will definitely keep this in mind if I need to contact them again. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That seems to be the consensus - I'll expect a slightly longer wait for these payments.

To answer your original question more clearly: Yes, processing time is different for backdated claims versus regular weekly claims. Regular weekly claims are processed through an automated system that typically releases funds within 1-2 business days after certification. Backdated payments require manual verification by a claims specialist, which adds 2-3 business days to the process.\n\nAlso, if you received multiple back payments, they might be released in stages rather than all at once. You can check the exact release dates in your payment history online.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! That makes sense now why they would take longer. I'll keep an eye on my payment history to track when they're released.

Just want to follow up - did your payments come through yet? The processing times have been a bit slower lately due to some system updates NYSDOL is implementing in 2025.
