Sent penalty payment to NY unemployment - how long until benefits resume?
I just mailed a money order to the NY Department of Labor to pay my overpayment penalty. I sent it on Saturday via regular mail. Does anyone know how long it usually takes for them to process the payment and turn my benefits back on? I'm getting kinda anxious since rent is due next week and I'm counting on this money. Has anyone gone through this process recently?

took them like 3 weeks to process mine last month... but that was during the system update they were doing. might be faster now

•3 weeks?! Omg I can't wait that long. Did you call them to check on the status or did you just wait it out?

When I had to pay back an overpayment in December, it took about 7-10 business days for them to process my payment and release my benefits. But that was a check, not a money order. Make sure you included your claim ID number on the payment and the memo line! If you didn't, it could take longer while they try to match your payment to your account.

•I did include my claim ID on the money order, so hopefully that helps. Did they notify you when they processed the payment or did the benefits just suddenly start again?

•They didn't notify me directly. I just kept checking my payment history online every day, and then one day the status changed from "pending" to "paid." I recommend logging into your account daily to check.

I'm going through this exact same thing!! Sent my payment for $427 two weeks ago and NOTHING yet. This is so frustrating because nobody answers the phones and my benefits are still on hold. I'm starting to panic because I have bills due and my account is almost empty. Has anyone found a reliable way to actually TALK to a real person there????

•After weeks of failed attempts to reach someone at NYSDOL, I finally used a service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They basically call for you and then connect you when they reach a real person. Saved me days of frustration. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - totally worth it when you're desperate to get answers about your benefits.

my cousin had to do this last year and he said it took like 2 weeks but his friend got his turned back on in just a few days so i think it depends on how busy they are maybe

According to the NYSDOL guidelines, payment processing generally takes 5-7 business days after receipt. However, there are a few important factors to consider: 1. Mail delivery to their processing center typically takes 3-5 business days 2. Money orders are processed similarly to checks (no faster) 3. Your benefits won't automatically resume immediately after payment processing - there's usually an additional 1-2 day system update In total, you should expect approximately 9-14 calendar days from when you mailed the payment until benefits resume. If it takes longer, I recommend contacting them directly through your online account messaging system first, then by phone if necessary.

•Thank you for the detailed breakdown! That actually makes me feel better knowing there's a typical timeframe. I'll wait two weeks before I start really worrying.

THEY ARE THE WORST!!! I sent a payment for my overpayment in January and they LOST IT!!! Had to send ANOTHER payment and fight with them for weeks!!! The system is COMPLETELY BROKEN and they don't care at all about us!!! I hate that we have to deal with this garbage just to get what we're entitled to!!!

One thing that might help speed things up is to keep certifying for your weekly benefits even while you're waiting for them to process your payment. That way, once they do process it, they can release all the weeks at once instead of you having to start the certification process over again.

•That's a really good point! I've still been certifying each week even though I know they're holding the payments. Hopefully that will help when they do process everything.

•No I didn't get tracking... just regular mail. That was probably a mistake. Too late now though :

•For future reference, always send payments to government agencies via certified mail with return receipt. It typically costs around $7 but provides proof of delivery and a tracking number. This documentation can be invaluable if there are any disputes about whether they received your payment.
