NY unemployment payment delayed after certification correction - still no money after a week
I made a mistake when certifying for my NY unemployment benefits last week. I called NYSDOL on Tuesday and got it 'fixed' (or so they said). The agent told me the money would definitely be in my account by Friday. Friday came - no money. So I called AGAIN and this time they said it would be here Monday or Tuesday. Well, it's Tuesday now and still nothing in my account! Has anyone dealt with this payment delay situation after fixing a certification mistake? How long did yours actually take to process? Getting really worried since my rent is due soon and I was counting on this payment.

When you say you made a 'mistake' certifying, what exactly happened? The type of correction can affect how long it takes to resolve. For most simple fixes like reporting the wrong day you worked, it typically takes 3-5 business days, but if it was something more complex like incorrect earnings or availability status, it can take 7-10 business days. Also check your payment history on your online account - sometimes it shows 'released' but still takes 1-2 more days to hit your bank.

•I accidentally said I refused work when I meant to say I didn't. Totally hit the wrong button! The first agent I talked to said it was a common mistake and easy to fix. When I check my payment history it still says 'pending' with no release date. Should I call them again or is this normal??

omg the same thing happened to my boyfriend last month!! he was waiting like 2 weeks after they said they fixed it. NYSDOL always says a few days but it never is lol

•2 WEEKS?? I can't wait that long! Did he have to keep calling or did it just show up eventually?

I ran into this EXACT situation in January. They told me 3 days, then 5 days, then 7 days - complete LIES!!! I finally reached a senior agent who told me the truth - when they make these "corrections" it triggers an automatic review that can take up to 14 business days!!! None of the regular agents will tell you this because they don't want to deal with your anger. The whole system is designed to delay payments and hope people give up!

•14 business days?? That's almost 3 weeks! I can't believe they're not upfront about this. How did you finally get a hold of a senior agent?

•Pure LUCK and calling 30+ times. The system is RIGGED against us. Most calls go to new agents who just read from scripts. If you call between 8:05-8:30am you might have better luck getting someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

Ive had this happen twice and both times took different amounts of time. The first time was 4 days the second was almost 2 weeks. Depends on who processes it and how backed up they are i think

This is a common issue with certification corrections. What's happening is your case has been flagged for manual review because of the correction. When you indicate you refused work (even accidentally), this triggers a special review process. Here's what you need to know: 1. Standard corrections take 3-5 business days 2. Corrections involving work refusal flags take 5-10 business days 3. The agents on the regular phone line often don't have visibility into the exact status of the review Your best option is to speak with a claims specialist who can actually see what's happening with your case and potentially expedite it. The regular agents you're speaking with likely can only see that it's "in process" without additional details.

•Thank you for explaining this! How do I speak with a claims specialist instead of a regular agent? Do I need to ask for one specifically when I call?

After trying to reach someone for days, I used Claimyr to get through to NYSDOL when I had a similar issue with a delayed payment. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours trying to get through. The agent was able to expedite my claim review and I got paid the next day. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - their website is claimyr.com if you're interested. Was totally worth it for me since I needed to get my rent paid.

•It worked for me! My brother actually told me about it after he used it. You still might wait a bit but nowhere near as long as calling directly. And they keep trying until they get through.

•I'm going to check this out right now. I've already spent hours this week trying to get through and I'm desperate at this point. Thanks for the suggestion!

In my experience with NY unemployment, there's a big difference between "we fixed it" and "we submitted the correction request." When you made the initial call, they probably just submitted the correction request but presented it to you as if it was already fixed. This happens ALL THE TIME. You should specifically ask: 1. Has my certification correction been APPROVED or just SUBMITTED? 2. Is there an actual RELEASE DATE for my payment? 3. Who specifically needs to approve my correction? Don't let them give you vague answers. If they say "a few days" ask them to define exactly how many days. Get names and ID numbers if possible. Document everything.

•This is really helpful advice. I definitely wasn't asking the right questions. I'm going to call again tomorrow with this specific list. Thank you!

anybody else notice payments are always delayed when rent is due? not a coincidence imo

•YES!!! I've been saying this for YEARS! There's always "system maintenance" or "processing delays" at the end of every month. The system is DESIGNED to make us late on rent so we get hit with late fees. It's all connected!

•There's no evidence of intentional delays timed with rent due dates. The more likely explanation is that end-of-month sees higher volume of calls and claims processing, which creates backlogs. Also, many people are more sensitive to delays during this period because of upcoming bills.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone who could actually help! Used that Claimyr service (thanks for recommending it!) and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. The agent confirmed my correction was sitting in a review queue and hadn't been fully processed. They escalated it to a supervisor who approved it while I was on the phone. Payment should be released tomorrow! So relieved right now.

•Great to hear! For anyone else facing similar issues, always request to speak with a claims specialist or supervisor who has the authority to approve pending corrections. Regular agents often can only see the status but can't take action on these types of holds.

•Make sure you check that it ACTUALLY comes through tomorrow. Don't trust what they say until you see the money in your account!

FINAL UPDATE: The money hit my account this morning! For anyone else who makes a certification mistake - make sure you speak with someone who can actually approve the correction, not just submit it. Regular agents seem to give standard timeframes that aren't accurate for these special cases. Huge relief to finally have this resolved.

•Thanks for updating us. This is useful information for others. With certification corrections that involve work refusal flags, always make sure you're speaking with someone who has authorization to actually approve the correction, not just log that a correction is needed. Glad everything worked out for you!
