Need urgent help filing for ny unemployment after illness recovery
I was seriously ill for about two months and completely missed my window to file for unemployment benefits. I lost my job back in February and then got really sick in March and April. Now that I'm finally feeling better, I have no idea where to start with filing my claim. The website is so confusing and I'm worried I might be too late to get any benefits at all. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Do I need a lawyer to help me with backdating my claim? Any advice on how to explain my medical situation to unemployment? I'm completely lost and my savings are almost gone.

You don't need a lawyer! You can still file for backdated benefits but you need to speak with an actual person at NY unemployment. They can help with your situation, especially since you had a medical reason for the delay. The key is actually getting someone on the phone though... that's the hard part.

•Thanks for letting me know. But how do I actually reach someone? I've been trying to call for days but just get that stupid automated system everytime.

After struggling for weeks to reach someone at NY unemployment, I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls for you and connects you with a live agent. Talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast - they backdated my claim and fixed everything in one call. Best decision I made after wasting so much time on hold. Check out this video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•I was skeptical too but after 3 weeks of trying to call myself I was desperate. It worked within a few hours - they called and when they got someone they connected me. The agent fixed everything in like 20 mins.

•another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

•Not promising to fix the whole system, just helps you get through to someone. Trust me, after you spend days trying to call yourself, you'll understand why this helps.

•I actually tried this too after seeing it mentioned here. Got through to someone in like 2 hours. My payments started a week later.

You should definitely document your illness with doctors notes if you have them. unemployment is gonna want proof of why you couldn't file on time. I had a similar situation last year (different reason) and they wanted all kinds of documentation. Be prepared!

Don't waste money on a lawyer for this. The system is designed to be used without one. What you need is patience and persistence in reaching an actual agent who can help you backdate your claim. Document EVERYTHING - dates you were sick, when you tried to file, doctor visits, etc. Take screenshots of error messages if you get them. This will all help your case.

•THIS!!! Documentation is so key. I got denied initially but won my appeal because I had screenshots and dates of everything.

Here's what you need to do step by step: 1) First, gather all medical documentation proving you were sick - doctor's notes, hospital visits, prescriptions, anything that shows dates. 2) Start by filing a new claim online now - don't wait any longer. You can explain your situation in the comments/additional info section. 3) After filing online, you MUST speak with a claims specialist to explain your situation and request backdating. This is the most crucial step. 4) Getting through to someone is nearly impossible by normal means. After trying for weeks, I used claimyr.com and it was a game-changer. They keep calling for you and connect you once they get a live agent. 5) When you do speak with someone, be polite but firm about your situation. Mention your documented illness and request backdating to when you first became unemployed. 6) If your initial request is denied, file an appeal immediately. Don't miss the deadline for this. 7) While waiting, make sure you're certifying weekly even for the current weeks. The system is frustrating but navigable with persistence. Good luck!

Check if your employer filed anything on your behalf. My company did a mass filing when they laid everyone off and I didn't even know until later.

Make sure your claim is for regular unemployment and not PUA since that program ended a while back. That confused me at first.

•Yep PUA is long gone. Just regular UI now.

Contact your state representative or assemblyperson! I was stuck in limbo for months, emailed my state senator's office, and they helped push my claim through within a week. They have special contacts at unemployment.
