Need advice on backdating EDD claim - what's the process?
Hey everyone, I need some advice about backdating my unemployment claim. I just lost my job and I'm trying to figure out how to handle this. Has anyone had experience with backdating their claim? What's the process like and are there any specific things I should be aware of? Any tips would be really appreciated!

I've been through this before. The key is to have a good reason for why you're filing late. They usually want to know why you couldn't file right when you lost your job. Make sure you have all your dates straight and any documentation that supports your case.

ā¢This is solid advice. I'd add that you should be prepared for a bit of a wait. The EDD can be slow sometimes, especially with backdated claims.

ā¢Yeah, and don't forget to keep certifying for benefits while you wait for the backdated weeks to be processed! I made that mistake and it was a headache to fix š«

Ugh, backdating is such a pain. I tried to do it last year and got denied twice before they finally approved it. Just be persistent and don't give up!

Quick question - how far back are you trying to backdate? There's usually a limit on how far they'll go.

ā¢I'm trying to backdate about 3 weeks. Lost my job a while ago but was hoping to find something new quickly. No luck so far š

ā¢3 weeks should be fine. I think they allow up to like 6 weeks or something? But don't quote me on that lol

Here's what you need to know about backdating your claim: ⢠You'll need a valid reason for not filing earlier. Common reasons include not knowing you were eligible, being too sick to file, or technical issues with the EDD website. ⢠Gather any documentation that supports your reason for late filing. This could be medical records, emails showing website errors, etc. ⢠Be prepared to explain your situation clearly and concisely when you talk to an EDD rep. ⢠You may need to file an appeal if your initial request is denied. Don't get discouraged if this happens - it's not uncommon. ⢠Keep certifying for benefits even while your backdating request is being processed. ⢠Be patient. The process can take several weeks, especially if they're backlogged. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

ā¢I found a way to actually get through! There's this service called claimyr.com that calls EDD for you, waits on hold, and then connects you when they get a real person. It costs $20 but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

make sure u keep ALL ur paystubs and any communication from ur employer about the layoff. EDD loves to ask for proof of everything š

ā¢Honestly, I think it's just underfunded and understaffed. But yeah, the result is the same - it suuuucks

Pro tip: if you can't get through on the phone, try contacting them through social media. Sometimes their Twitter team is more responsive than the phone lines.

Just went through the backdating process myself a few months ago! One thing that really helped me was calling first thing in the morning right when they open (8am). The wait times are usually shorter then. Also, when you do get through, be super polite and patient with the rep - they deal with frustrated people all day and being nice can really make a difference in how helpful they are. Good luck with your claim!

ā¢This is really good advice about calling early! I never thought about the timing making such a difference. The part about being nice to the reps is so important too - they're just trying to do their job and probably deal with a lot of angry people. Thanks for sharing your experience! š
