NYS Department of Labor notification requirements when starting new job - do I need to notify unemployment?

I've been collecting unemployment for about 6 weeks and just got hired for a position that starts Monday. Do I need to notify NYS Department of Labor right away or can I just stop filing my weekly claims? I'm worried about messing something up and having to pay money back later. The job offer came through really quickly and I want to make sure I handle this correctly with my unemployment claim.

Yes, you absolutely need to report this to NYS Department of Labor immediately. You should stop filing weekly claims starting with the week you begin work. You can update your claim status online through your my.ny.gov account or call the claims center. Congratulations on the new job! Make sure you report your last day of unemployment accurately to avoid any overpayment issues.

Thank you! Should I report it before I start work or after my first day? I want to get the timing right.

How long did it take to resolve the overpayment? I'm paranoid about making any mistakes with NYS Department of Labor.

You can report return to work through the my.ny.gov portal under 'Report Return to Work' or by calling the claims line. The key thing is to NOT file a weekly claim for any week where you're working full-time. If you work part-time, you may still be eligible for partial benefits, but full-time employment ends your claim. Document everything - save screenshots of when you reported and keep records of your start date.

This is really helpful! I'll log into my.ny.gov tonight and report it. Better safe than sorry with these things.

THE SYSTEM IS SO CONFUSING!! Why don't they make this clearer when you first file? I've been stressed about this exact situation since I started looking for work. NYS Department of Labor should send better instructions about what to do when you find employment.

I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor when I needed to report my return to work. Kept getting busy signals and the online system was down. If you're having similar issues reaching them, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made it so much easier to speak with someone and confirm my claim was properly closed.

interesting, never heard of that before. was it expensive?

It was worth it for the peace of mind. Much better than spending hours trying to get through on my own and worrying I'd mess something up.

Congratulations on landing the job! I went through this same situation last year. You should report it as soon as possible - ideally before your first day of work. The NYS Department of Labor wants to know immediately when your employment status changes. I reported mine on a Friday afternoon before starting work the following Monday and had no issues. Just make sure to not file any weekly claims for weeks you're working full-time, even if you haven't been paid yet. The reporting date matters more than when you actually receive your first paycheck.

That's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing! I was wondering about the timing too - whether it matters when you actually get paid vs when you start work. Good to know the reporting date is what counts. Did you have any issues with your final week's benefits or did everything process smoothly once you reported?

Great advice everyone! Just wanted to add that when you report your return to work, make sure you have your exact start date ready. NYS Department of Labor will ask for the specific date you began employment, not just the week. Also, if your new employer has you fill out any paperwork about previous unemployment benefits (some do for their records), make sure the dates align with what you report to the state. The most important thing is being proactive - it's always better to over-communicate with them than to leave them guessing about your employment status.

This is such a helpful thread! As someone new to the unemployment system, I had no idea about all these reporting requirements. The point about having your exact start date ready is really important - I would have probably just said "sometime next week" without thinking about it. It's good to know that NYS Department of Labor takes this stuff seriously and that being proactive is the way to go. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

I went through this exact same situation a few months ago! The key is to report it BEFORE your first day of work if possible. I called the NYS Department of Labor the Friday before I started my new job on Monday, and they were really helpful about walking me through the process. They'll ask for your exact start date and make sure your benefits stop at the right time. Don't worry too much - as long as you're proactive about reporting it, you'll be fine. The worst thing you can do is keep filing weekly claims after you start working. Congrats on the new job!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know that calling on Friday before starting Monday worked well for you. I'm definitely going to be proactive about this - I'd rather spend a few minutes reporting it properly than deal with overpayment issues later. It's reassuring to hear from people who've actually been through this process successfully. The timing aspect seems to be the most important thing based on everyone's responses here.

I just went through this exact process two weeks ago! Definitely report it immediately - I used the my.ny.gov portal to report my return to work the day I got my job offer, even before my actual start date. The online system is pretty straightforward - there's a "Report Return to Work" section where you just enter your employer info and start date. The most important thing is to NOT file your weekly claim for any week you're working full-time. I was paranoid about messing it up too, but as long as you report it promptly and stop filing claims when you start working, you'll be fine. NYS Department of Labor actually prefers when people are proactive about reporting employment changes. Good luck with the new job!
