How do you tell NYS Department of Labor unemployment you went back to work?
I just started a new job this week after being on unemployment for 2 months. I know I need to report this to NYS Department of Labor but I'm not sure exactly how to do it. Do I just stop filing my weekly claims or do I need to actually notify them somehow? I don't want to mess anything up and end up owing money back. My last weekly claim was filed on Sunday and I started work on Tuesday.

You need to file one final weekly claim for the week you started working and report your first day of work on that claim. Don't just stop filing without reporting it properly. When you file your weekly claim, there's a section where you can indicate your return to work date. This helps NYS Department of Labor close your claim correctly and avoid any overpayment issues.

•Thank you! So I should file this Sunday's claim and put Tuesday as my start date? Will that automatically close my unemployment claim?

Make sure you report the exact date you started working, not just the week. NYS Department of Labor is very specific about this stuff. If you worked any part of a week, you need to report those earnings too. Even if it's just one or two days of work, put down what you earned for that partial week.

•This is so confusing! I thought you just stopped filing when you got a job. Why do they make it so complicated??

I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor when I needed to report my return to work last year. Kept getting busy signals and hung up on. If you need to actually speak to someone about this, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to unemployment agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of that but sounds useful. The phone lines are always jammed when you actually need help.

The system is so messed up. I reported my return to work properly and they STILL sent me a questionnaire 3 weeks later asking why I stopped filing claims. Like, hello, I told you I went back to work! Had to call and explain everything again. Just keep records of what you report in case they question it later.

•That's exactly why documentation is so important. Always screenshot your weekly claim submissions showing the return to work date.

Just went through this exact situation last month! You definitely want to file that final weekly claim for the week you started working. When you're filling it out, there should be a question about returning to work - make sure to put your exact start date (Tuesday in your case). The system will automatically calculate any partial benefits you might be owed for the days before you started. After you submit that claim with your return-to-work date, your unemployment claim will be closed and you won't need to file anymore. Don't worry, you're doing the right thing by reporting it properly!

•This is really helpful! I'm new to this whole unemployment process and it's reassuring to hear from someone who just went through the same thing. Quick question - when you say the system automatically calculates partial benefits, does that mean I might still get some payment for Monday and Tuesday of that week before I started work? I want to make sure I understand what to expect.
