Does NYS Department of Labor get notified automatically when you find employment?
I just started a new job this week and I'm wondering if NYS Department of Labor gets notified automatically when I'm hired, or do I need to tell them myself? I don't want to get in trouble for overpayment if they keep sending benefits. Should I stop filing my weekly claims right away or wait until my first paycheck? Really confused about the process here.

You need to report it yourself when you file your weekly claim. NYS Department of Labor doesn't automatically know when you get hired. When you do your weekly certification, there's a question about whether you worked during that week and how many hours. Be honest about your start date and any training hours too.

•So I should still file my weekly claim this week but report that I started working? What if I haven't gotten paid yet?

yeah you gotta tell them yourself, they dont know unless you report it or they find out later through wage records which could take months

Definitely report it immediately on your next weekly claim filing. NYS Department of Labor cross-references wage records eventually, but that can take 6-12 months. If they discover unreported wages later, you'll face an overpayment notice with penalties and interest. Report all work, even unpaid training days, orientation, or trial periods. The system asks specifically about work performed during each claim week.

•Wait, even unpaid training counts? I had two days of unpaid orientation last month and didn't report it because I wasn't getting paid...

•Yes, any work activities count regardless of pay. You should contact NYS Department of Labor to correct those weeks. Better to fix it now than deal with an overpayment investigation later.

I was in this exact situation last year and couldn't get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor to ask questions. Kept getting disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me through to a real person at the unemployment office. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me so much stress trying to figure out the reporting requirements.

•How much does something like that cost? I just need to ask one quick question about my reporting.

•It was totally worth it for me since I couldn't waste more time on hold. Much easier than the regular phone system.

The whole system is ridiculous if you ask me! They expect us to remember every little detail but their own records are months behind. I got an overpayment notice for wages from a job I reported correctly, took forever to sort out.

•That's not the right way to do it. You need to file one final claim reporting your work to officially close your claim period. Just stopping can cause issues later.
