Does NYS Department of Labor know when you get a job - unemployment monitoring question
I just started a new part-time job this week but I'm still eligible for partial unemployment benefits since my hours are limited. I'm wondering - does the NYS Department of Labor automatically know when I get hired somewhere, or do I only need to report it when I file my weekly claim? I want to make sure I'm doing everything correctly and not getting myself into trouble. The job is only 20 hours a week so I should still qualify for some benefits but I'm nervous about the reporting process.

You need to report ALL work and earnings when you file your weekly claim, regardless of whether NYS Department of Labor knows about it or not. They don't automatically track your employment status in real-time, but they do cross-reference data eventually. Be honest about your hours and wages - partial unemployment is designed for exactly your situation.

•Thanks! So I should report the part-time work on my next weekly claim filing? Do I need to call them or just include it in the online form?

they definitely find out eventually through wage records and tax stuff, my friend tried to hide a side job and got hit with an overpayment notice months later

The NYS Department of Labor receives quarterly wage reports from employers, so they will eventually see your employment. But you're required to report work immediately on your weekly claim. For part-time work, you can still receive partial benefits as long as your earnings don't exceed a certain threshold. Just be completely honest about your hours and gross wages.

•What happens if you forget to report work one week but remember the next week? I'm always paranoid about making mistakes on the weekly claim form.

I had a similar situation last year where I couldn't get through to NYS Department of Labor by phone to ask about reporting requirements. I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent who explained exactly how to report part-time work. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really saved me from making costly mistakes with my claim.

•How much did that cost? I might need to try it if I can't get through on the phone myself.

Just report everything honestly on your weekly claim and you'll be fine. The system is designed to handle partial unemployment situations. Better to over-report than under-report!

I went through this exact situation a few months ago! The key thing is to report your part-time work on your weekly certification - you'll enter your gross wages and hours worked. The system will automatically calculate your partial benefit amount. Don't worry about calling them unless you have specific questions - the online form handles partial unemployment calculations pretty well. Just make sure you report the work for the week you actually performed it, not when you got paid. You're doing the right thing by being proactive about this!

•This is super helpful! I was getting confused about the timing - so if I worked Monday through Wednesday this week, I report those hours on this week's claim even if I won't get paid until next Friday? And do you know roughly what the earnings threshold is before you lose all benefits? I'm making about $300/week at 20 hours so I'm hoping I can still get something.
