Does NYS unemployment stop when you get a job - how fast do benefits end?
I just got hired for a new position starting Monday and I'm wondering how quickly my NYS Department of Labor benefits will stop. Do I need to report this immediately or can I wait until my next weekly claim? I don't want to mess anything up or get an overpayment notice later. The job is full-time so I know I won't be eligible anymore but I'm not sure about the timing of when everything stops.

You need to report the job immediately when you file your next weekly claim. Don't wait! When you're asked about work during the benefit week, answer honestly about your start date. Your benefits will stop for any week where you work full-time hours. The NYS Department of Labor system is pretty good about cutting off benefits once you report employment.

•Thanks! So I should be honest on my weekly claim this Sunday about starting work Monday? I was worried about timing.

yeah same thing happened to me, just be honest on the weekly claim form when it asks about work, they'll stop the payments automatically once you report full time employment

Congratulations on the new job! The key is reporting accurately on your weekly claim certification. When you file your claim for the week you start working, you'll indicate your employment status. NYS Department of Labor will automatically adjust your benefits. If you work any full-time hours during a benefit week, you're typically not eligible for that week's payment. Keep all your job-related documentation just in case there are questions later about your employment start date.

•What if you start mid-week though? Like if I start Wednesday, am I still eligible for part of that week's benefit?

•It depends on your total hours and earnings for that partial week. You'd need to report your exact hours and wages on your weekly claim. NYS Department of Labor will calculate if you're still eligible for a reduced benefit or if you've exceeded the earnings threshold.

I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about this exact situation last year. The phone lines were constantly busy and I kept getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and got my employment reporting question answered in like 15 minutes.

•never heard of that but might be worth trying if the phone lines are still terrible

Just want to add - DEFINITELY don't try to keep collecting while you're working full-time. I know someone who thought they could get away with it for a few weeks and ended up with a huge overpayment demand. NYS Department of Labor will find out eventually through wage records and you'll have to pay everything back plus penalties.

Congrats! The system usually works pretty smoothly for stopping benefits when you report work. Just file your weekly claims honestly and you'll be fine.

Just went through this same process a few months ago! You definitely want to report it on your next weekly claim when they ask about work activity. The system is pretty efficient - once you report full-time employment, your benefits will automatically stop for that week and going forward. Don't stress too much about the exact timing, just be honest about your start date when you file your weekly certification. The important thing is not to continue claiming benefits once you're working full-time. Good luck with the new job!
