Does NYS Department of Labor contact your new employer when you find work?
I just started a new job this week and I'm wondering if NYS Department of Labor will contact my new employer directly about my unemployment claim? I reported the new employment on my weekly claim certification but I'm worried about what my new boss might think if they get a call from unemployment. Has anyone had experience with this? Do they routinely verify new employment or only if there's an issue?

NYS Department of Labor typically doesn't contact your new employer just because you reported starting work. They mainly verify employment when there are discrepancies in your reporting or if they're investigating potential fraud. Since you properly reported your new job on your weekly claim, you should be fine. They have access to wage databases that show your employment status without needing to call your employer directly.

i had unemployment for 8 months last year and when i got my new job nothing happened with my employer. they never called or anything. just make sure you stop filing your weekly claims once you start working full time

•Actually, you should file one final claim for any partial week you worked and then stop. Don't just stop filing without reporting your work - that can cause issues later.

Wait, what if you're still working part-time though? I thought you could still collect unemployment if you're not working full hours yet. My new job is only 25 hours a week and I'm still filing weekly claims. Is that going to trigger some kind of investigation?

•You can definitely collect partial unemployment if you're working reduced hours. Just make sure you're accurately reporting your work hours and wages on each weekly certification. NYS Department of Labor will calculate your partial benefits based on what you earn.

•Ok good, I was worried I was doing something wrong. I've been reporting everything correctly on my weekly claims.

I had a similar concern when I started my new position. If you need to speak with someone at NYS Department of Labor about employment verification policies, I found claimyr.com really helpful for getting through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to get clarification on my specific situation without waiting on hold for hours.

Generally they only contact employers if there's fraud suspected or wage discrepancies. Since you reported your employment properly, you're doing everything right. Congratulations on the new job!

I went through the same situation a few months ago when I started my new job. NYS DOL didn't contact my employer at all - they rely on their quarterly wage reporting system to verify employment. As long as you're honest about your work hours and earnings on your weekly certifications, you shouldn't have any issues. The key is just being accurate and timely with your reporting. Your new employer won't even know you were on unemployment unless you tell them.
