How to stop certifying for unemployment benefits in NYS - need to end my weekly claims
I got a new job and start next Monday but I'm not sure how to stop my weekly unemployment certifications. Do I just stop filing or do I need to notify NYS Department of Labor somehow? I don't want to accidentally get overpaid or mess up my claim status in case something happens with the new job. My last certification was for this past week and I haven't filed for next week yet.

You should log into your my.ny.gov account and look for the option to report that you've returned to work. There's usually a section where you can update your employment status. Don't just stop certifying without notifying them - that could cause issues later.

•Thanks! I found the employment reporting section. Should I report it for the week I start working or the week before?

When you file your final weekly claim, make sure to answer 'yes' to the question about returning to work and provide the start date. NYS Department of Labor will automatically stop your claim after that. Keep all your documentation just in case they need to verify anything later.

•What if the job doesn't work out though? Can you reopen your claim easily or do you have to start all over again?

•If you lose the job within a year of your original claim date, you can usually reopen your existing claim rather than filing a new one. Just contact NYS Department of Labor to reactivate it.

I had trouble reaching anyone at NYS Department of Labor when I needed to update my employment status last year. The phone lines were always busy and I couldn't get through. Someone here mentioned using claimyr.com to get connected to an actual agent - there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. It helped me get through when I needed to clarify my claim status.

•Yeah it did! Got connected within like 15 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. Was worth it for the peace of mind.

Make sure you keep track of any wages you earn in your final week of unemployment. Even if you only work a few days, you need to report those earnings on your last certification. NYS Department of Labor is pretty strict about accurate wage reporting.

Just wanted to add - when you report your return to work, make sure you have your start date and employer information ready. The system will ask for your new employer's name and address. Also, if you're starting part-time initially, you might still be eligible for partial benefits, so don't assume you need to completely stop your claim right away. The system will calculate if you're still eligible based on your reduced hours/wages.

•That's a really good point about part-time work! I didn't realize you could still get partial benefits if you're starting with reduced hours. Is there a minimum number of hours you have to work before they cut off benefits completely?
