NYS Department of Labor adjudication determination - what does this actually mean for my unemployment claim?

I've been waiting 6 weeks for my unemployment claim to process and today I finally got an update that says 'adjudication determination' in my account. But I have NO idea what this actually means! Does this mean they made a decision? Is my claim approved or denied? The status doesn't say either way and I'm freaking out because I really need these benefits. Has anyone else seen this status before? What happens next?

An adjudication determination means the NYS Department of Labor has finished reviewing your case and made a decision about your eligibility. This happens after they investigate any issues that came up during the initial review process. You should receive a formal determination letter in the mail within 2-3 business days explaining their decision and the reasoning behind it. If approved, your benefits should start processing. If denied, the letter will explain why and how to appeal.

Thank you! That makes me feel a bit better. I guess I just have to wait for the letter to know for sure what the decision is.

Oh wow, so even after the determination it can still take more time? This process is so stressful.

The adjudication process can involve several different issues - separation from employment, availability for work, job search activities, or identity verification. The determination letter will specify exactly what they reviewed and what they decided. Keep checking your online account too because sometimes the payment information updates before you get the physical letter.

This is really helpful. I've been dealing with getting through to NYS Department of Labor for weeks trying to get answers about my adjudication. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent who could explain my specific situation. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Was way easier than trying to call myself and getting hung up on constantly.

ugh the waiting is the WORST part of this whole process!! they really need to make these statuses clearer instead of using confusing terms like adjudication determination

Totally agree! The whole system seems designed to keep people in the dark about what's happening with their claims.

I went through this exact same thing about 3 months ago! The "adjudication determination" status definitely means they've made a decision on your case. In my experience, you'll usually know within 24-48 hours whether it's good or bad news because your account will either show payment amounts or you'll get a notice about issues that need to be resolved. The formal determination letter follows a few days later with all the details. Try not to stress too much - the fact that they completed the adjudication is actually a good sign that your case is moving forward rather than being stuck in limbo. Keep checking your account daily for updates!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It really helps to hear from someone who went through the same thing. I'll definitely keep checking my account daily like you suggested. Fingers crossed it's good news when the updates come through!

I just went through this same situation a few weeks ago! The "adjudication determination" status had me panicking too because it's so vague. In my case, it meant they had finished investigating a question about my job separation and decided in my favor. The key thing is to watch for your benefit amount to appear in your account - that's usually the first sign of approval. If there are issues, you'll typically see a message about an overpayment or disqualification instead. The whole process took about 8 weeks total for me from initial filing to getting my first payment. Hang in there - I know the uncertainty is incredibly stressful when you're depending on these benefits!

Thanks for sharing your timeline - 8 weeks total is really helpful to know! I'm at 6 weeks now so hopefully I'm getting close. I'll keep an eye out for the benefit amount showing up in my account like you mentioned. It's reassuring to hear from people who actually made it through this process successfully!
