What does adjudication mean for NYS Department of Labor unemployment claims?
I'm totally confused about this whole adjudication thing with my unemployment claim. My NYS Department of Labor account shows my claim is 'under adjudication' for the past two weeks and I have no idea what that even means. Does anyone know what adjudication actually is and how long it takes? I really need these benefits to pay my rent and I'm starting to panic.

Adjudication is basically when NYS Department of Labor needs to investigate something about your claim before they can approve it. It could be anything - like they need to verify your work history, check if you quit or were fired, or confirm your identity. The process can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on what they're reviewing.

•Oh okay that makes more sense. Is there any way to find out what specifically they're investigating? My account doesn't show any details.

I went through adjudication last year and it was nerve-wracking! In my case, they needed to contact my previous employer because there was some confusion about whether I was laid off or quit. The whole thing took about 3 weeks but once it was resolved, I got all my back payments. Try checking if there are any open issues in your my.ny.gov account that need documentation.

•Same thing happened to me but it only took 10 days. I think it depends on how busy they are and what kind of issue needs to be resolved.

ugh the adjudication process is SO frustrating!! I've been waiting 4 weeks now and can't get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor to find out what's going on. They really need to improve their communication about these delays.

•I had similar issues getting through to NYS Department of Labor about my adjudication status. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they help you get through to an actual agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to talk to someone within a day and get an update on my case.

•Really? I've never heard of that service. Did they actually help resolve your adjudication issue or just get you information?

just keep filing your weekly claims even during adjudication! thats important so you dont lose benefits for those weeks

•Good point! I wasn't sure if I should keep filing or wait for the adjudication to finish. Thanks for clarifying that.
