What does adjudication process mean for unemployment benefits in NY?
I filed my unemployment claim two weeks ago and the status just changed to 'adjudication in progress' on my.ny.gov. I have no idea what this means or how long it's supposed to take. My friend said it could be weeks before I hear anything back from NYS Department of Labor. Can someone explain what exactly happens during adjudication? I'm starting to stress because I need these benefits to pay rent next month.

Adjudication is when NYS Department of Labor reviews your claim to determine if you're eligible for benefits. They're basically fact-checking your application - looking at your work history, reason for separation from your last job, and making sure you meet all the requirements. During this process they might contact your former employer to verify information. It can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on how complex your situation is.

•Thanks for explaining! Do I need to do anything while they're reviewing it or just wait?

You still need to file your weekly claims even during adjudication! A lot of people make the mistake of thinking they should wait. Keep certifying every week or you'll lose those weeks of benefits even if your claim gets approved later.

•THIS. I learned this the hard way and lost 3 weeks of benefits because I stopped filing during adjudication.

The adjudication process can be so frustrating because you're in limbo and NYS Department of Labor doesn't give you much information about what's happening. I was in adjudication for almost a month last year. If you need to speak to someone about your case and can't get through the regular phone lines, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual NYS Department of Labor agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really saved me a lot of stress trying to call over and over.

•Never heard of that before... does it actually work or is it one of those scam things?

•It's legit - they just help you get through to the right department instead of spending hours on hold. I was skeptical too but it worked for me when I needed to check on my adjudication status.

•Hang in there! Once it's approved you'll get back pay for all the weeks you've been waiting, assuming you kept filing your weekly claims.

Just wanted to add that sometimes adjudication happens because there's a question about your job separation. Like if your employer contests your claim or if there's any confusion about whether you quit or were fired. NYS Department of Labor has to investigate these situations to make sure benefits go to the right people.

I went through this same process last year and it's definitely nerve-wracking! One thing that helped me was checking the NY Department of Labor website regularly for any updates or requests for additional information. Sometimes they'll ask for documents or clarification and you might miss it if you're not checking. Also, if you were laid off or fired, make sure you have any documentation from your employer (like a termination letter) ready in case they need it. The waiting is the worst part but try to stay patient - most claims do get approved eventually if you're eligible.

•This is really helpful advice! I didn't know they might ask for additional documents during the process. I was laid off so I should definitely dig up my termination paperwork just in case. Did you get any notifications when they needed more info from you, or do you have to keep checking the website to see if they posted requests?
