NYDOE error shows me on medical leave instead of resigned, UI benefits stopped - need help ASAP!
Hey everyone, I'm in a tough spot with my unemployment benefits and could use some advice. My former employer (a city education department) hasn't updated their system to show that I resigned back in October. Instead, it still shows me as being on medical leave. This error has caused my unemployment benefits to stop since December, leaving me without any income. I've submitted all the necessary documents online, including proof of my resignation and a letter from my doctor clearing me to work. I'm ready and willing to work, but this administrative error is causing major problems. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Any tips on how to get this resolved quickly? Waiting months for a hearing is really putting me in a tough spot financially.

Ugh, bureaucracy at its finest 🙄 I had a similar issue with my former employer not updating my status. Here's what worked for me: 1. Call the unemployment office EVERY DAY. Be persistent. 2. Reach out to your local representative's office. They can sometimes expedite these issues. 3. Keep detailed records of all your communications. 4. If possible, try to get a direct contact at your former employer's HR department who can help push the update through. Hang in there, OP. The system is frustrating, but don't give up!

•This is solid advice. I second contacting your local rep - they helped me out big time when I was stuck in unemployment limbo.

•Calling everyday seems excessive. Don't they just put you on some kinda list?

•@profile3 In my experience, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Different reps have different levels of helpfulness, so calling daily increases your chances of getting someone who can actually move things along.

Have you tried reaching out to your union rep? They might be able to put some pressure on the department to fix this error.

•Thanks for the suggestion. I did try that, but they weren't much help. Said it's out of their hands once I've resigned. 😕

•Damn, that sucks. Sorry to hear they weren't more helpful. Unions can be hit or miss sometimes.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

•Yep, 100% legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

•How long did it take to get through to someone?

•It varied, but usually within an hour or two. Way better than spending all day trying to get through myself.

this is why i always tell ppl to get EVERYTHING in writing when dealing with HR or benefits stuff. hope you get it sorted out soon, OP!

Have you considered legal action? This seems like a clear case of administrative error causing financial hardship. Might be worth consulting with an employment lawyer.

•Lawyers are expensive tho. Might not be worth it for unemployment benefits 🤷♂️

•True, but some offer free consultations. Could be worth exploring at least.

Pro tip: If you can't get through on the phone, try reaching out via social media. Sometimes tweeting at the department or messaging them on Facebook can get a faster response. Worth a shot! 🤞

idk if this helps, but there's a new online portal for submitting appeals and additional docs. might be faster than waiting for a hearing. check the DOL website for details.
