NY unemployment website going crazy with new self-employment question

Been trying to certify my weekly claim since Tuesday evening and kept getting error messages saying the system was down for maintenance. Finally managed to get through this morning but now there's some weird glitch when you press 2 for Spanish (I'm bilingual). After like 8 attempts I finally got through in English instead. Then after the regular questions, it suddenly asked if I was self-employed at my last job. I answered yes because that's literally why I'm on unemployment benefits in the first place! Then it just abruptly said I completed my certification without any confirmation screen or anything. Has anyone else noticed this new question about self-employment? Is this normal or should I be worried about my payment being delayed? This system is so frustrating!

Yeah the same thing happened to me yesterday! The website is a complete mess right now. I got that self-employment question too and wasn't sure how to answer it since I was technically an independent contractor. I said yes and it just ended the certification with no confirmation. I checked my payment history today and nothing is showing up yet so im kinda worried.

Did you get your payment yet? I'm still waiting and starting to panic a little 😬

I had similar issues with ny unemployment this week. Couldn't even log in for certification until Wednesday! I tried calling their help line but was on hold for 3 hours and gave up. Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a live agent - they called and stayed on hold, then connected me when an agent picked up. Talking to that agent got my payment processed right away! Best money I've ever spent after weeks of stress. They even have a YouTube video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds too good to be true. how does this actually work? do they have access to ur account or something?

No access to anything! They just call the unemployment line for you and wait on hold (which took like 2 hours), then when someone answers they connect that person to your phone. I was skeptical too but it worked perfectly.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch. They just call and wait on hold so you don't have to. When an agent picks up, they transfer the call to you. Saved me literally 3+ hours of waiting.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

They don't ask for ANY personal info - they just connect you with an agent. When I was finally able to talk to someone, the agent fixed my issue in like 5 minutes. After 3 weeks of trying, that call changed everything.

the system is ALWAYS breaking down every monday and tuesday. everyone's trying to certify at the same time. i always wait till wednesday afternoon now, way less glitchy. as for the self employment question, i think its new. they added it like 2 weeks ago for some reason.

I think they might be cracking down on self-employed people. My friend got audited recently because they said he wasn't reporting something correctly. Be prepared to maybe upload more documentation if they request it. The whole NY unemployment system is a MESS 🤬

Oh great that's just what I need - more documentation requests 😩 Do you know what kind of stuff they asked your friend for?

they made him send in 1099s from the past 2 years and some biz expense receipts. took like 3 weeks to get resolved and he didn't get paid during that time. total BS

It's likely related to the new federal guidelines that were implemented last month. The DOL is supposed to verify self-employment income differently now. The question is legit but the abrupt ending is definitely a glitch. Here's what I recommend: 1. Take screenshots of everything when you certify 2. Check your payment history section daily 3. If nothing posts within 3 business days, you NEED to contact them 4. The phone systems are overwhelmed so use Claimyr.com to get through (they wait on hold for you) 5. Be ready with your employment docs if they ask I went through this exact situation in June and had to fight for weeks until I finally got through to an agent who fixed it in literally 5 minutes. The key is actually reaching a human being who can help. The self-employment question is probably causing payment flags in their system. Only a live agent can clear those flags.

Thank you SO MUCH for the detailed response! I'll definitely check my payment history tomorrow. Did you have any issues after talking to the agent or did everything go back to normal?

After talking to the agent, my payments went back to normal immediately. They even released the backpay that was being held. Just make sure when you talk to them you mention specifically that you got the self-employment question and the certification ended abruptly.

everyone who's had this happen plz update if u do or dont get paid so we know whats happening! im certifying tomorrow and now im nervous 😱

I certified yesterday with that same question, got my deposit today. Normal amount. I think it's just a system update that's glitching a bit but not affecting payments?

thats a relief!! thanks for letting me know!

the NY unemployment website is such garbage. crashed 4 times on me last month and then locked me out of my account for "too many login attempts" 🤡

0 coins

Same thing happened to me! Had to wait a whole week for the security lock to reset. This state needs to invest in better tech fr

FYI they're adding some additional questions for self-employed people because of some fraud thing that was in the news. My cousin works at the DOL (not in NY but another state) and she said theres a nationwide push to verify self-employment claims more carefully. As long as your stuff is legit you should be fine.

not directly related but is anybody else's payment coming a day late recently? used to hit my account tuesdays now it's not coming til wednesday

Yep. Mine used to be Tuesday mornings like clockwork, now it's Wednesday afternoon. Been this way for about a month.

ok good to know it's not just me. thx!

0 coins

It took me 6 MONTHS to get my benefit issues resolved with ny unemployment. If you're having any problems, don't wait - call them immediately. And if you can't get through, seriously try claimyr.com - I was skeptical but it actually worked and I finally got to talk to someone who fixed my claim. Without that I'd probably still be waiting for my money.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

0 coins

Not a hack at all. It's just a service that calls and waits on hold for you. The call still goes through the official unemployment phone line, you just don't have to sit there for 4 hours waiting.

0 coins

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when a friend told me about this. Literally had my issue fixed the same day after weeks of trying. Just sayin'

0 coins

Anyone else think its weird how they keep changing the system every few weeks? Like they're deliberately trying to confuse people and make it harder to claim 🤔

0 coins

THIS!!! I swear they do it on purpose to discourage people from filing. Classic government BS.

I dunno, seems more like incompetence than malice lol. They can't even keep the website running, doubt they're smart enough for some grand conspiracy

happened to me 2 days ago. got my payment this morning so seems like nothing to worry about

•

wait are u supposed to be certifying even if ur self employed?? i thought that ended with pua??

Vince Eh

•

If you qualify for regular unemployment (had enough W-2 income), you can still collect even if your most recent job was self-employment. That's different from the old pandemic programs.

oh got it thx for clearing that up

call them ASAP. people here saying payments are coming through are lucky. my brother had a similar issue and his payment got held for "identity verification" for 3 weeks. don't risk it just call.

Collins Angel

•

Great, that's really worrying. Did he eventually get it resolved?

0 coins

Sunny Wang

•

Yeah but only after he finally got through to someone on the phone. Emailing them did nothing.
