NY unemployment system showing 'break in claim' error when reporting partial work hours

I started working part-time at a retail store in August after being completely unemployed since March. Last week I only worked 12 hours (3 shifts) but when I tried to certify for my benefits and reported those hours, the system gave me a 'break in claim' message. I don't understand why this is happening since I've been claiming partial benefits with similar hours for the past few months with no issues. The new system update seems to be causing problems. I tried entering zero days worked with 12 hours and also tried 3 days with 12 hours - both giving me the same error. Has anyone else run into this issue with the updated partial unemployment certification process? Not sure if I should call them or if there's a way to fix this online.

Yes! I've been dealing with the exact same thing. I worked 11 hours last week spread across 2 days, and when I certified it gave me that stupid break in claim message. The new system is completely broken. I'm pretty sure they updated something in September that messed everything up.

How long have you been getting this error? Did you call them about it yet?

This is the second week its happening. I tried calling but gave up after being on hold for 2+ hours 😡

The hold times are insane right now. Everyone's having issues with this update.

I had this exact problem and was about to lose my mind after trying to call 50+ times. Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a game changer. They call NY unemployment for you, wait on hold, then connect you when an agent picks up. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - they fixed my issue in like 5 minutes once I actually got through. Check out their explainer video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Umm this sounds like an ad. Does this actually work or are you just promoting something?

Nah, I get the skepticism but it's real. They literally just call and wait on hold for you. My issue was fixed the same day after weeks of trying myself.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I'm desperate at this point but tired of getting scammed.

It worked for me! The unemployment office fixed my claim issue as soon as I actually got to talk to someone. The service just helps you skip the hold times.

I used them too. Worth every penny when ur about to get evicted and need ur benefits ASAP. Got connected in like 43 mins vs spending days trying to get thru myself.

Try entering it as 3 days worked with the 12 hours. The system gets confused if you put 0 days but report hours. I had the same issue back in July and that's what fixed it for me. The system is super picky about how you report partial work.

I've been getting this too! The break in claim message started showing up right after they updated their system. The NY unemployment website is such a joke - they can't do anything right 🤡

facts. they spend millions on "upgrades" and somehow make everything worse every single time 🤮

There's actually a workaround for this. The system is glitchy with how it handles partial days. Try this: - Log in during non-peak hours (early morning is best) - When certifying, report each day individually (even if 0 hours) - For days you worked, make sure to round UP to the nearest hour - If it still gives you the break in claim error, wait 24 hours and try again If none of that works, you unfortunately WILL need to call them. I spent 3 weeks trying to fix this online before I finally got through on the phone. The agent told me there was a system-wide issue with partial claims after the September update that they're still working on fixing. If you need to call and can't get through, I highly recommend claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold for you and call when an agent picks up. It was the only way I could actually get someone on the line after days of trying. The good news is that once an agent fixes it, you'll get all your back payments at once. But you DO need to get it fixed or your claim will remain broken.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! I'll try your workaround first thing tomorrow. How long did it take for you to get your back payments after talking to an agent?

It took about 3 business days for the money to hit my account after they fixed it. But they had to do some manual override on their end.

You need to call them. This happened to me too and it's because of some glitch in the system that's triggering a break in claim message even when there isn't one. No way to fix it online.

The problem is how they define "days worked" in the new system. If you worked any part of a day, you have to count it as a full day even if it was just 2 hours. So for 12 hours across 3 shifts, you need to enter it as 3 days worked. DONT enter 0 days if you actually worked - that's what triggers the error.

This is 100% correct. I'm a former DOL employee and the new system is extremely picky about how days vs hours are reported. The system reads 0 days but >0 hours as contradictory data.

but what if you really did work 0 days? like if u have a gig job where u work from home whenever? this system is so stupid

If you're doing gig work with no set schedule, you still count each calendar day you performed any work as a "day worked" no matter how many hours.

So tired of NY unemployment's constant system "improvements" that just break everything 🙄 I swear they do this on purpose to make people give up on claiming

💯💯💯 This is EXACTLY what they do. Make it so frustrating that people just stop trying to get what they're entitled to.

BTW when you call them (and you will have to call), make sure you have all your work history for the last few weeks ready. They'll ask for exact dates, hours, and pay for each day. If you don't have it ready they'll make you call back.

Yeah and make sure to call early in the morning when they first open. That's the only time I've ever been able to get through without waiting 3+ hours.

I gave up trying to call during business hours. Tried this claimyr.com service someone mentioned above and got through on my first try. Not going back to the old way.

Same issue here. Been getting the break in claim message for two weeks ever since they "updated" the system. NY unemployment is a disaster and nobody picks up the phone. I've tried calling over 30 times.

Check if u have any outstanding docs they need. Sometimes the break in claim message is their way of telling u they need additional info. Go to ur documents section and see if anything is pending.

Yara Nassar

I checked and don't see anything pending or requested. Everything looks normal except for this error when I certify.

Did u try logging out, clearing cookies/cache, and logging back in? Sometimes the NY unemployment site just gets stuck in a weird state and needs a refresh. Worked for me once when I had certification issues.

i had that happen to me too. ended up having to wait on hold for 3 hours to talk to someone. they said their system update in sept broke a bunch of partial unemployment claims and they have to fix them manually. ur not gonna be able to fix it yourself no matter what u try

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Did they at least fix it in one call or did you have to keep calling back?

they fixed it in one call but i had to wait for all my back payments. took about a week to get the money

I'm dealing with this exact same thing and it's so frustrating. The system worked fine until their "upgrade" and now nothing works right. Classic NY unemployment office mess 🤦‍♀️
