NY unemployment stuck after ID.me verification - do I just wait 14 days?
I finally completed the ID.me verification for my NY unemployment claim yesterday, and now I'm not sure what happens next. The confirmation page said something about allowing up to 14 days for processing, but I'm getting desperate for my benefits. Is there really no way to contact someone at unemployment to check on my claim status? Do I literally just wait the full 14 days? I've tried calling the main number dozens of times but never get through to a real person. This is so frustrating!

The 14 day wait after ID.me is unfortunately pretty standard right now. They're dealing with tons of identity verification backlogs. I had to wait 12 days in February when I went through it, and my account suddenly updated without any notification. Keep certifying weekly while you wait though!

•Thanks, I'll keep certifying. I'm just worried because my rent is due next week and I haven't received benefits in over a month now. Did you get backpay for the weeks they were verifying your ID?

You deffinetly need to keep calling them! The 14 days is just what they say but sometimes it takes FOREVER if you dont call!!! I waited 3 weeks and nothing happened, then I finally got thru to someone and they approved me on the spot. Said my account was just stuck in the system!

•This is why the system is so broken! They tell us to wait but meanwhile our accounts are just sitting there needing a simple approval. I've been dealing with NYSDOL for 5 months now and it's ALWAYS some stupid technical issue they could fix in 5 seconds if they'd just pick up the phone!!!

I had to deal with this exact situation in January. Here's what you should do: 1. Continue certifying weekly even while waiting for ID.me processing 2. Check your online account daily for any message center updates 3. If 14 days pass with no update, you need to contact them From my experience helping folks with this, about 70% get processed automatically within the 14 days, but some accounts do get stuck in a verification queue that requires agent intervention. The system isn't perfect.

•Thanks for the advice. Can you tell me the best way to actually reach someone? I've tried calling so many times but never get through.

I've been in your shoes and know how frustrating it is when you need the money NOW but have to wait. I was in the same situation last month and tried calling at least 50 times with no luck. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an unemployment agent in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent I spoke with was able to immediately release my ID.me hold and I got paid the next day. Saved me from missing my car payment.

•does that service actually work? seems sketchy to me, like how would they get you through when nobody else can get through??

Wait, did you complete the ENTIRE ID.me process? A lot of people think they finished but actually missed the final step where you have to specifically authorize NYSDOL to access your verified identity info. It's a separate screen after the verification that many people miss.

•Oh no, now I'm stressed I might have missed something! I did the photo ID upload, the selfie video, and got a confirmation screen saying I was verified. Then it took me back to the unemployment site. Was there another step after that??

One more thing - make sure you check your email spam folder daily! NYSDOL sent me three emails requesting additional information during my ID.me process and ALL of them went to spam. I almost missed my deadline because of it.

•Good tip, thanks! Just checked my spam folder and there's nothing from them yet, but I'll keep an eye on it.

For those who completed ID.me verification in 2025, the current estimated processing times are: - Standard claims: 7-14 days - Claims with previous identity issues: up to 21 days - Claims with out-of-state identity history: up to 30 days The system is designed to automatically release benefits once verification is complete, but as others have mentioned, some claims require manual review. Make sure you've completed that final authorization step connecting ID.me to NYSDOL.

•Those timeframes are complete BS! I did everything perfectly and still waited 47 days!!! Meanwhile I almost got evicted. They make up these "official timeframes" to shut us up while they take their sweet time. Don't believe anything NYSDOL says about processing times!

•That's reassuring to hear. I'll try to be patient, but it's hard when bills are due.

Just FYI I talked to my neighbor who works at the unemployment office (not in claims but in IT) and he said theyre totally overwhelmed with ID.me stuff right now because they switched systems in March. He said calling definitely helps because otherwise your claim just sits in the general queue.

•That's really helpful insider info, thanks! I'm definitely going to try harder to get through on the phone then.

UPDATE: Based on the advice here, I logged back into ID.me and discovered I hadn't completed the final authorization step to share my info with NYSDOL. After I did that, my account was approved within 48 hours! Thank you all for your help - especially the person who pointed out the missing step!

•So glad it worked out! This happens to so many people with ID.me. The process isn't very clear about that final authorization step.

•No problem! I'll post an update when something changes with my claim. Thanks again for pointing out the authorization step - I really think that was the issue.

I went through this exact same situation in December and it was nerve-wracking! After reading through all these comments, I'd definitely recommend double-checking that final ID.me authorization step that Joy mentioned - that seems to trip up a lot of people. In my case, I waited the full 14 days and my benefits were automatically released on day 13 with full backpay for all the weeks I had certified during the wait. The key things that helped me stay sane during the wait: 1) Keep certifying weekly no matter what, 2) Screenshot everything for your records, and 3) Check your account daily around 6am when they tend to update things. Hang in there - most people do get through this process successfully, even though the waiting is brutal when you need the money!

•This is really helpful advice, especially the tip about checking at 6am when they update things! I've been checking randomly throughout the day but never thought about timing it. I'm definitely going to go back and make sure I completed that final authorization step with ID.me - after reading all these comments it sounds like that's where a lot of people get stuck. It's reassuring to hear that you got your backpay for all the weeks you certified during the wait period. I'll keep my fingers crossed that mine processes within the 14 days like yours did!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Just finished my ID.me verification 3 days ago and I'm already anxious about the wait. Reading through all these comments has been super helpful - I'm definitely going to go back and double-check that I completed the final authorization step everyone keeps mentioning. It's crazy how unclear that part of the process is! I've been calling nonstop but like everyone else, I can never get through to an actual person. The automated system just keeps telling me to wait for processing. Really hoping mine doesn't take the full 14 days since I'm already behind on bills, but at least now I know to keep certifying weekly and check my account at 6am. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it helps to know I'm not alone in this frustrating process!
