NY unemployment site suddenly missing captcha - can't login to certify

The weirdest thing just happened with my weekly certification. I went to log in like I always do but the captcha that's normally next to the login fields is completely gone. When I try to enter my username and password and click login anyway, it gives me an error saying I didn't complete the captcha. But there literally is no captcha showing up on my screen for me to complete! I've tried refreshing the page like 20 times, cleared my cache, tried different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, even Edge), and even tried on my phone instead of my computer. Same issue everywhere - no captcha appears but it demands I complete one. Anyone else experiencing this or know what's going on? I need to certify this week and I'm freaking out because I can't even get into the system.

Had the same problem last thursday! For some reason the captcha wasnt showing up on any of my devices. I tried using different browsers, clearing cookies, even borrowed my roommates laptop. Nothing worked. I finally got through by using claimyr.com to get an agent on the phone who filed my weekly claim for me. Talking to an agent got my money released so fast instead of dealing with the website glitch. Best decision I made in weeks. Here's a video of how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

yeah it's totally real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for 3 days to get through. They call for you and when they get a human they connect you. Saved me HOURS of frustration

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? The unemployment system is basically DESIGNED to be impossible to navigate 🙄

the difference is it actually works lol. they literally just call and wait on hold FOR you. when an agent picks up, you get a call. simple as that.

Try disabling any ad blockers or browser extensions. I had this exact same problem a few weeks ago and turns out my ad blocker was hiding the captcha element. Turned it off for the unemployment site and boom - captcha appeared!

THANK YOUUUU!!!! This worked!! I disabled uBlock Origin and the captcha showed up immediately. You're a lifesaver 😭

Happy to help! The NY unemployment site is so finicky with these things. Make sure to whitelist it in your adblocker settings so you don't have to disable completely next time.

This is a known issue right now. I spoke with an agent yesterday who told me they're having problems with the captcha system. Some tech update they did broke something. Supposedly they're fixing it but you know how that goes... 🙄 Try calling 888-209-8124 if you absolutely need to certify. Prepare to be on hold for 2+ hours though.

2+ hours? try 4+ hours lol. called last week and literally waited from 9am to 1:30pm before someone picked up.

Let me share exactly what worked for me with a similar issue last month. The NY unemployment website has some serious technical issues lately that nobody talks about. First, try a different browser completely - not just clearing cache but a totally different browser. Edge worked for me when Chrome failed. Second, make sure your zoom level is at 100% - sounds stupid but if you've zoomed in or out, sometimes elements like captchas disappear. Third, try using incognito/private browsing mode which disables all extensions automatically. Fourth, if all else fails and you NEED to certify this week, you can use claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent who can help file your claim over the phone. It's the most reliable way to get through when the website is being problematic. Lastly, if none of that works, you can try certifying very early in the morning (like 5-6 AM) or late at night when server load is lower. Sometimes the captcha issues happen during high traffic periods. Hope this helps - the system is frustrating but there are workarounds!

the zoom thing ACTUALLY WORKS. I had my browser at 125% zoom and when I set it back to 100% the captcha appeared. what kind of terrible website design is this???

Thank you for all these suggestions! The adblocker solution worked for me, but these are all great tips for anyone else having this issue.

Yeah, I was desperate after trying for 3 days to certify with no luck. They basically just call and wait on hold for you. When they get a human, they connect you. Saved me from spending all day on the phone.

another day another NY unemployment website failure 🤡 they seriously need to hire some competent developers

I had this issue for a different reason - turns out my internet provider was blocking some elements of the site. Try using your phone's data instead of wifi if you haven't already.

Weird! I did try on my phone's data but still had the same issue. Turned out to be my adblocker!

check if JavaScript is enabled in your browser. captchas need JavaScript to work properly.

You can try calling your local career center. Sometimes they can help with login issues or even file your weekly certification for you if the website isn't working. Look up your nearest NY career center - they're less busy than the main unemployment line.

This is good advice but FYI most career centers are appointment only now and booked weeks out. source: tried to get help last month

Their system is probably just overwhelmed again. Remember last year when the entire system crashed for like 3 days? They said something about upgrading servers after that but clearly they didnt upgrade enough 🙄

this might sound dumb but try scrolling down? sometimes the captcha loads but appears below the fold of the webpage where you cant see it without scrolling down

Isabella Brown

That was the first thing I checked 😂 But thanks for the suggestion! It was definitely my adblocker causing the problem.

My brother in law works in IT for a state agency (not NY) and he says most government websites are running on ancient systems they never properly updated. Not surprised they broke something with the captcha. Hope you get it sorted!

Call the telecert automated line at 888-581-5812 to file by phone! You don't need to talk to anyone, just follow the prompts. I always use it because the website is so unreliable.
