NY unemployment on hold - Can't access ID.me with "Authenticator" from 2021, keeps asking for security key I don't have
I'm losing my mind over this ID.me verification process for ny unemployment. Been trying for the past 2 weeks to complete my verification but it's driving me insane. Every time I log in, the system keeps asking me for some kind of security key card that I never set up in the first place! I tried calling the support line multiple times but I can never get through to a real person. Just automated messages telling me to check their website. Went to their website and the help articles are useless - they assume you already have everything set up. When I log into my account.id.me, I see several options for verification methods: - Code Generator: "Add" - Says it will "Generate verification codes via code generator apps like ID.me Authenticator to sign in." - Authenticator: "Added Jul 27, 2021" with a "Rename" option (but I don't remember setting this up back in 2021 and have no idea how to access it now) - FIDO Security Key: "Set Up" - Describes it as "A Security Key is a small physical device used for signing in." - NFC-Enabled Mobile Security Key: "Set Up" - Says "Enroll a YubiKey security key for secure mobile authentication. ID.me Authenticator app download required." At the bottom there's just some generic text saying "ID.me simplifies how individuals prove and share their identity online." Yeah right! Nothing simple about this at all. I'm completely stuck because the only option that shows as "Added" is this "Authenticator" from July 27, 2021, but I have absolutely no clue what this is or how to use it. Do I need to download some special ID.me app? Is this something I had on an old phone? Anyone else dealt with this nightmare? My benefits are on hold until I can verify my identity and my rent is due next week. I'm seriously stressing out here.

Exact same thing happened to me last month. Spent 3 days trying to figure it out myself. ID.me is literally the worst verification system ever created. What worked for me was doing a video call verification with them instead of trying to use the security key stuff. Look for the option that says something like "verify your identity with an agent" or similar. You'll wait in a queue but at least it works.

•Thanks for the tip! Did you have to wait long for the video call? I'm worried I'll be in queue forever.

•I waited about 45 mins on a Tuesday morning. Not terrible but definitely bring something to do while waiting lol

•I waited 3 HOURS for my video call last week. Seems totally random when you'll get through 🤷♀️

After dealing with the same frustrating ID.me nightmare for my ny unemployment claim, I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual human at the unemployment office. They called and stayed on hold for me, then connected me to a rep who helped override the ID.me issues. Best money I've ever spent to get my benefits flowing again! They even have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•This sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else used this service? How does it even work?

•It's basically a service that calls and waits on hold for you. When they get someone on the line, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me like 4 hours of hold music 😂

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? unemployment systems are such a disaster i'm desperate for anything

•Yeah it actually worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was at the end of my rope after trying to verify for weeks. The agent I got was able to push through my verification.

•Sounds like an ad. No way this works for real issues like identity verification.

•Not an ad, just sharing what worked for ME when I was stuck in ID.me hell. The unemployment rep was able to note my account and provide a different verification pathway. Better than the zero help I was getting before 🤷♂️

If you downloaded the ID.me authenticator app at some point, that's probably what it's looking for. Check your phone to see if you have it installed. If not, you might need to download it again and somehow recover your access. Their customer service is basically non-existent so good luck with that 🙄

They pull this security key bs to make it harder to claim benefits. My cousin works for the state (not unemployment) and says they're deliberately making verification harder because of all the fraud during covid. It's ridiculous and hurts actual people who need help. Good luck man

•THIS!!! 100% facts. The system is working exactly as designed - to be frustrating enough that people give up. Stay persistent!

•Conspiracy theories don't help. ID.me is used by lots of government agencies, not just unemployment.

•not a conspiracy when its actually happening lmao. call it what you want but making systems intentionally difficult is a real strategy

Here's a step-by-step guide to fix this ID.me issue with NY unemployment (I went through this nightmare in April): 1. First, try clearing your browser cache and cookies completely, then restart your browser. Many ID.me issues are browser-related. 2. If that doesn't work, try using a completely different browser (if you're on Chrome, try Firefox or Edge). 3. If you're still stuck, DO NOT keep trying the security key option if you never set one up. Instead, look for the "more options" or "need help" link (sometimes it's tiny at the bottom). 4. Click on the option for video verification with a "Trusted Referee" - this bypasses the security key requirement. 5. If all else fails, you can try reaching an actual unemployment representative who can sometimes override or provide alternative verification options. This is where I found success using Claimyr.com - they connected me to a live agent after I had spent days trying to call myself. The most important thing is to NOT give up. The system is frustrating by design but persistence pays off. Your benefits are your right if you qualify for them. Feel free to DM me if you have specific questions about the process. I've helped several people in my family get through this same issue.

•Thanks so much for this detailed breakdown! I'll try the browser clearing first and then look for the video verification option. Really appreciate you taking the time to write this all out.

•No problem! The browser thing fixed it for about 40% of people I've helped. The video verification works for most of the rest. Good luck!

i had this EXACT same problem omg 🤬 ended up having to make a whole new ID.me account with a different email address. lost 3 weeks of benefits in the process while they sorted it out. the whole system is a joke

•Did you lose any payment history or have to reapply for benefits when you made the new account?

•had to speak to a supervisor who manually linked my new ID.me to my existing claim. took forever but eventually got back-paid

Might not be what you want to hear but I had to go to an actual local unemployment office in person to get this fixed. The online system is completely broken and the phone lines are useless. If there's an office within driving distance, just go there - it's worth the trip.

The "Authenticator" that shows as added is probably Google Authenticator or some other 2FA app you might have set up last year and forgotten about. Do you still have the same phone? Check if you have any authenticator apps installed.

•I checked and don't have any authenticator apps that I can find. Is there a way to reset this without losing my account?

•Unfortunately ID.me makes it really difficult to reset without going through their verification process again. Try the video verification option others have mentioned.

Sooooo frustrating! I just went thru this same ID.me hellscape for my ny unemployment. Try logging in on a desktop computer instead of mobile - for some reason their mobile site is completely broken and shows different options than the desktop version.

unpopular opinion but ID.me actually helped me when someone tried to claim benefits in my name. there was fraud EVERYWHERE during covid. the system sucks to navigate but there's a reason they made verification harder

•That's great it helped YOU but what about all the legitimate people who can't get their benefits because of this broken system? 🙄

•I get that it's frustrating, just saying there's a reason behind the increased security. They could definitely make it more user friendly tho.

•both things can be true - we needed better security AND the current system is trash. they could have implemented something that actually works

Contact your state representative!!! Seriously, this worked for me after 3 weeks of ID.me hell. Find your NY state assembly person and senator, email both offices explaining your situation. They have special contacts at unemployment who can override verification issues.

•Seconding this! My state rep's office fixed my issue in 2 days after I spent weeks getting nowhere.

if the authenticator says added in july 2021 but you don't remember setting it up, your account might have been compromised. call the fraud department directly (not regular unemployment) - different number with way shorter wait times.

Hiroshi Nakamura
•Oh no, I didn't even think about fraud! The date actually shows September 2022 but I still don't remember setting anything up. Do you have the fraud department number?

•1-888-598-2077 is NY unemployment fraud hotline. Mention possible identity theft specifically.

Uggggh I feel your pain on the NY unemployment verification nightmare. After dealing with the exact same issue last month, I finally got someone on the phone using claimyr.com who explained that sometimes the system gets stuck in a loop where it keeps asking for security verification even after you've done it. The rep had to manually reset something on my account and then everything started working.

•I've been calling for weeks and can't get thru. Is that service actually worth it? How long did it take?

•Took about 45 minutes from when I signed up until I was talking to someone. After weeks of calling myself and never getting through, it was amazing. Talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast - definitely worth it for me.

someone probably already said this but have you tried resetting your 2FA completely? go to account settings and look for security options, there should be a way to remove all verification methods and start over

pro tip: the id.me help chat is actually better than calling. go to id.me website (not through unemployment) and look for the chat option. still took me 30 mins in queue but they fixed my security key issue without video verification

•just your id.me login email and they'll ask for some verification info during the chat. have your ID ready just in case
