NY unemployment making me certify daily instead of weekly - anyone else having this issue?

I'm so confused about my NY unemployment claim right now. For some reason the system is making me file/certify EVERY single day instead of just once a week like normal. I definitely still have benefit days remaining (checked and have about 60 days left), but for the past 2 weeks I've had to go through the certification process daily. Is this happening to anyone else? Did they change the system? I'm worried I'm doing something wrong or that my claim has some kind of flag on it. The daily certification is really annoying and I'm scared I'll forget to do it one day and lose benefits.

Yep happened to me too! Been going on for like 3 weeks now. Super annoying having to remember to do it every day.

Really?? Glad I'm not the only one. Did yours just suddenly switch to daily? Mine changed after that system maintenance they did in late January.

This happens when your claim gets flagged for the daily certification requirement. It's usually because either: 1. You had a break in claiming benefits recently 2. The system detected a potential eligibility issue 3. You recently answered a certification question that triggered additional monitoring The daily certification requirement is a verification measure, not a punishment. Your benefits aren't at risk as long as you continue certifying each day. The system will typically revert to weekly certification after 3-4 weeks if no issues are found.

Thank you for explaining! I did have a week where I worked part-time and didn't claim, then started claiming again. That must be why. Is there any way to call and get it switched back sooner? The daily thing is really hard with my work schedule.

Is this new for 2025? I never heard of this daily thing before and been on unemployment off and on for years.

SAME HERE and it's driving me CRAZY!!! I literally have an alarm set on my phone every day so I don't forget. Missed ONE day last week and my payment got delayed by 4 days!! The system is so broken. Why do they make everything so complicated??

Oh no, I'm sorry that happened! I've been setting alarms too. Did you have to do anything special to get the payment after missing a day?

I had this issue back in March and it was because I needed to complete a Work Search Review. Check your dashboard for any messages or required documents they might be waiting for. Once I submitted my work search records, it went back to weekly certification after about 10 days.

Thanks for the tip. I just checked my dashboard and don't see any pending documents or messages, but I'll double-check the Message Center too just to be sure.

I've been dealing with this daily certification nightmare for 3 weeks now. After trying for DAYS to reach someone (kept getting disconnected or 2+ hour wait times), I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a NYSDOL agent yesterday. Totally worth it - the agent explained that my claim was flagged for daily certification due to inconsistent work search activities, but she was able to review my case and switch me back to weekly certification on the spot. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

I've never heard of Claimyr before. Did they actually get you through to someone quickly? I've been trying to call for days but keep giving up after being on hold forever.

Yes, got through in about 20 minutes instead of hours. The agent I spoke with said daily certification is becoming more common as they're increasing monitoring of claims, but she agreed it shouldn't last longer than 4 weeks in most cases.

This is happening to EVERYONE right now, not just you. NYSDOL is absolutely swamped with new claims after all those tech layoffs in March, so they're putting everyone on daily cert to catch fraud. It's not about YOU personally, it's their broken system trying to handle too many claims at once.

This isn't accurate information. While the system does occasionally experience high volume periods, daily certification is an individual account status that happens for specific reasons (work breaks, eligibility questions, etc.), not a system-wide policy affecting all claimants. Most people continue with weekly certification as normal.

Update: I just checked the NY unemployment website, and they actually have a note about this under the "What's New" section. It states that some claimants may be selected for enhanced verification which includes daily certification requirements. This is part of their 2025 fraud prevention measures. According to the site, these measures are temporary and accounts return to normal certification schedules after the verification period (typically 2-4 weeks).

Thank you for sharing this! I completely missed that notice. That actually makes me feel better knowing it's just a temporary verification thing and not something wrong with my claim specifically.

anyone know what happens if you miss certifying for ONE day during this daily requirement thing? do you lose that day's benefits forever or can you make it up somehow?

If you miss a daily certification, you don't permanently lose that day's benefits. You can request retroactive certification for the missed day by selecting the "Claim Weekly Benefits" option and then choosing the option to certify for a previous unclaimed day. This must be done within 7 days of the missed certification. Beyond that timeframe, you'd need to call NYSDOL directly to request the retroactive payment.

Update: You all were right! I just checked today and my certification is back to weekly now. It lasted exactly 3 weeks of daily certification. Looks like it was just temporary verification like many of you mentioned. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great to hear! This is the typical timeline for most verification periods. Glad it resolved itself without you needing to call.
