NY unemployment deposit timing changed after switching from Chime to PayPal account - when will it arrive?
I usually get my NY unemployment deposited into my Chime account like clockwork - deposit hits between 6:00pm and 6:59pm on Mondays every week. But I recently switched to have it deposited into my PayPal account instead (wanted to keep benefits separate from regular money). Does anyone know when PayPal typically makes UI deposits available? It's already past my normal time and nothing's showing up yet. Getting a little anxious since I have bills scheduled...

PayPal deposits for NY unemployment typically hit 24-48 hours after your regular deposit time when you first switch. After the first payment, it should stabilize to a regular schedule, but it's usually overnight/early morning rather than evening. The NYSDOL sends it at the same time, but different financial institutions process them on different schedules. I switched from Chime to PayPal last year and now reliably get mine Tuesday mornings around 4-5am.

•Thank you!! That helps a lot - I was getting worried something went wrong with my claim. I'll stop obsessively checking my PayPal balance every 5 minutes and just expect it tomorrow morning then. Wish the DOL website mentioned this somewhere!

•That's super helpful to know! I'll check first thing when I wake up tomorrow then. Didn't realize Chime was actually faster than other options.

•Chime is definitely faster for UI deposits. They make funds available as soon as they get the ACH notification, while traditional banks and even PayPal hold it until the funds fully clear. That's why you're seeing this delay. If you need access to funds quickly, Chime is usually the best option, though there are some downsides (customer service issues mostly).

When I switched my NY unemployment deposit method, it took nearly a week for the first payment to show up in the new account. The NYSDOL system needs to verify the new account information, which can add processing time for the first payment. After that initial deposit, it stabilized to a regular schedule. If you don't see your payment by Wednesday, you should call NYSDOL to make sure the account change was processed correctly. You might need to try several times to get through though.

•A WEEK?? Oh no...I really hope it doesn't take that long. I have rent due Friday. I assumed it would just go to the new account without any verification delay. Definitely going to call tomorrow if nothing shows up overnight.

•It might not take that long - that was just my experience. Some people see it much faster. But definitely call if it's not there by tomorrow afternoon. The verification process is sometimes instant and sometimes takes longer depending on various factors.

Same thing happened 2 me. PayPal takes FOR-EVER compared to Chime!!! I got so stressed I switched back to Chime after 2 weeks. First payment took 4 days, then the rest were coming in Tuesdays around noon. WAY later than my old Chime deposits. They don't tell you this when you switch!!!

•4 days??? That's awful! I'm gonna be in trouble if it takes that long. Maybe I should switch back to Chime after this payment... I just wanted to keep my UI money separate, but it's not worth the delay.

I had the exact same issue last month when I switched from Chime to PayPal! That first payment took forever - actually showed up early Wednesday morning around 2am. I was panicking by Tuesday afternoon. If you need to reach someone at NYSDOL to confirm everything is processing correctly, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it helped me get through to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of calling for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I talked to an agent, they confirmed my payment was processing normally and just delayed due to the account change. Every payment after that first one has been consistent - Tuesdays around 2-3am.

•Thank you for the Claimyr suggestion! If my payment doesn't show up by tomorrow afternoon I'll definitely try that. I've spent hours on hold with NYSDOL before and it's absolutely miserable. Did you have to explain anything special to the agent about the account change?

•No problem! When I got through to the agent, I just explained I had recently changed my direct deposit information and wanted to confirm the payment was still processing correctly. They were able to see in their system that the payment was sent but still pending with the new financial institution. Hope your payment shows up soon!

•That is weird! I wonder why there's so much variation. NYSDOL must send them all out at the same time, right? It's making me nervous that it's just lost somehow.

•YES! It finally showed up in PayPal at 3:42am this morning. What a relief! Looks like everyone was right about the overnight deposit. Thanks all for calming me down yesterday!

Glad to hear your payment arrived! For future reference, the specific timing depends on how quickly each financial institution processes ACH transfers from NY state government agencies. Chime and a few other online banks make funds available immediately when they receive the ACH notification (which is why they're faster). Most other banks and services like PayPal wait until the transfer fully settles. If anyone else is reading this and planning to change their deposit account, just be prepared for that first payment to take a little longer, and know that different financial institutions have different processing schedules.

•This is really helpful information! I wish the NYSDOL website explained all this when you're changing your deposit information. Would have saved me a lot of stress!
