NY unemployment asking me to 'request additional funds' - agent filed paperwork for me but what happens next?

So I ran out of regular benefits in August after being on unemployment since February. Yesterday I finally got through to someone at the claims center after calling non-stop for three days. The rep told me I'm eligible to request additional funds and that she submitted the paperwork 'on my behalf' and told me to just 'continue certifying weekly.' I'm confused because I haven't received any confirmation email or anything in my account inbox. Has anyone gone through this process before? She said it could take anywhere from 2-4 weeks for processing but I'm stressing out because rent is due soon and I literally have $215 left in my account. I'm also worried because I heard some people have to do interviews? But the agent didn't mention anything about that to me. The whole thing seemed suspiciously easy after how hard it was to even get someone on the phone. Should I be doing anything else while I wait?

Yeah I went through this back in May. It's an extended benefits thing. The agent submits it for you and you literally just keep certifying weekly like normal. Took about 3 weeks for mine to kick in but then I got a lump sum for all the weeks I certified during the waiting period. No interview was required for me.

Thanks for the reply! That's super helpful. Did you get any kind of confirmation at all? Or did the money just show up one day?

Literally zero communication lol. Just checking my account every morning and then one day BAM - money appeared. NY unemployment communication is trash 🗑️

Classic NY unemployment 🙄 Thanks again!

After spending WEEKS trying to reach anyone at unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human in like 20 minutes. Talking to that agent got my additional funds approved way faster than just waiting. Best decision I made after trying to call them myself for days straight. They've got this demo video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Wait is this for real? I've been trying to get through for literally 2 weeks and keep getting disconnected 😭

0 coins

100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after calling 70+ times. The service connects you with an actual agent who can help. Mine fixed my additional funds request immediately.

0 coins

sounds like another scam tbh... these unemployment 'solutions' pop up everywhere 🙄

0 coins

not a scam at all. it just calls for you and stays on hold, then connects you when a real agent picks up. saved me like 4 hours of hold music lol

0 coins

Just checked it out - seems like they just call and wait on hold for you? That's actually pretty clever ngl

I've been on extended funds since July. The whole process is super inconsistent. My friend got hers in 10 days, mine took 5 weeks with zero updates. KEEP CERTIFYING no matter what!!!! That's the most important thing. And yeah your payments will backdate to when you first applied.

This system is such a JOKE. They tell us nothing, make us wait for weeks, and expect us to just survive on air?? I had to borrow money from my parents while waiting for my extended benefits. Called 97 times one day and got nowhere. NY unemployment is a dumpster fire.

0 coins

Seriously! The whole system is designed to be impossible to navigate. It's like they WANT us to give up 😡

0 coins

EXACTLY. And trying to get actual info is like pulling teeth. 'Continue to certify' isn't exactly detailed instructions lmao

Here's the deal with additional funds requests from my experience (I went through this twice): 1) The agent files it for you - this is correct 2) You MUST continue certifying every week or you'll lose those weeks 3) There's usually a 2-4 week processing time, but it varies wildly 4) You won't get ANY notifications during this time - the NY system is terrible at communication 5) When approved, you'll get all back payments at once 6) Some people do get randomly selected for interviews but most don't One thing that REALLY helped me was using claimyr.com to get through to an agent when my application seemed stuck. Instead of calling endlessly, they got me through to someone who could actually check the status of my claim. Hang in there OP! I know it's stressful when you're running out of money, but keep certifying and the funds should come through.

Thank you so much for the detailed info! This is exactly what I was looking for. The silence from them is what's driving me crazy.

That claimyr thing saved me too when I was about to get evicted and needed to talk to someone RIGHT AWAY. Got me thru in like 30 min after I spent 3 days trying myself 🙏

0 coins

ive been thru this twice now smh. the first time took 17 days the second time took 36 days. its totally random and calling them 100 times wont speed it up. just certify and wait.

0 coins

Different experience here - I DID have to do an interview. They called me randomly one afternoon about 2 weeks after the agent submitted my additional funds request. Just basic questions about why I was still unemployed, if I was looking for work, etc. Got approved 3 days after that. Maybe they're doing random checks?

0 coins

Oh that's interesting. What kind of questions did they ask? Was it stressful?

0 coins

Not too bad - mostly confirming the jobs I'd applied for and why I was still unemployed. Had to explain my job search efforts. Call lasted maybe 15 mins. Just be honest about your situation and you'll be fine!

0 coins

They're definitely doing random checks. My roommate got one but I didn't, and we applied same week.

0 coins

Does anyone know if you can check the status of this online? I'm in the same situation and can't find anything in my account showing a pending additional funds request.

0 coins

Nope, that would make too much sense 🤣 NY unemployment doesn't believe in giving us useful information or status updates

0 coins

i tried calling and asking and the rep literally said 'just wait and keep certifying' then hung up on me lolol

0 coins

I'm in exactly the same boat right now. Agent filed for me 3 weeks ago and still nothing. The anxiety is killing me. Let me know if yours comes through and I'll do the same!

0 coins

Will do! Fingers crossed for both of us 🤞

If ur really desperate while waiting u should try calling them using claimyr.com - it costs money but it got me through to an agent who pushed my claim through faster. Without it I would still be waiting... NY unemployment phone lines are impossible otherwise.

0 coins

This actually works? The website looks kinda sketch tbh

Yeah it works. They just stay on hold for you and call when an agent picks up. Saved me literally DAYS of trying to get through those busy signals.

0 coins

Used it last month when I was desperate. Worth every penny when you consider the alternative is calling 200 times yourself 😩

0 coins

check ur mail too!! sometimes they send a letter but nothing online. happened to my cousin.

0 coins

Dude, don't panic. It's normal to not get any confirmation. NY unemployment is operating like it's 1985 still. Just keep certifying and it'll work out. My additional funds kicked in after 18 days and I got all back pay. Don't worry about interviews - those are super rare.

0 coins

Thanks man, that helps. The silence is driving me crazy but good to know it's normal.

0 coins

The silence is BY DESIGN. They don't want to make it easy 🙃 But you'll get your money eventually!

0 coins

The process took exactly 26 days for me. No communication whatsoever during that time. I even tried calling back and the rep just said "it's still processing" and that was it. Just make 100% sure you keep certifying every week!

0 coins

When did you send your request? They've been extra backed up since September from what I heard. My friend waited 7 weeks recently 😬

0 coins

Just yesterday. The agent didn't mention any delays though 😭

0 coins

Yikes, good luck. They never tell you about delays even when they know about them. Classic NY unemployment move.

0 coins

THIS IS WHY I LEFT NY!!! The unemployment system is a joke compared to other states. I moved to Pennsylvania and their system actually WORKS and COMMUNICATES with you. NY treats you like you're trying to scam them instead of just trying to get your legally entitled benefits.

0 coins

Not everyone can just pack up and move states when they're unemployed.... but yeah the system is trash

0 coins

Fair point. Just sharing my experience. NY unemployment is uniquely terrible tho.

If your rent is due soon and you're worried, reach out to local rental assistance programs while you wait. Most counties in NY have emergency rent help. Don't wait until you're behind to ask for help!

0 coins

That's good advice, thank you. Any specific programs you know of?

0 coins

Check out OTDA's website or call 211. They can direct you to local resources based on your specific county. Catholic Charities also helps regardless of religion.

this is very common!! happened to me in June. just relax and keep certifying. the money will show up. took 22 days for mine.

0 coins

make SURE you're completing your work search requirements while you wait!! they can use that as a reason to deny your extension if audited later!

0 coins

Good point! I've been applying to at least 5 jobs a week and keeping records of everything.

0 coins

Smart. I got burned on this once because I didn't document properly. Keep those receipts!

0 coins

whatever you do DONT STOP CERTIFYING!!! Even if it looks like nothing is happening. I stopped for 2 weeks cuz I thought it wasn't working and lost those payments forever 😭😭😭
