My husband filed for ny unemployment 4 weeks ago - no approval letter, no calls, nothing!

My husband lost his job due to company downsizing in June. He immediately filed for unemployment on June 20th, answered all the questions correctly, and set up his direct deposit. It's now been over 4 weeks and not only has he not received any approval, we haven't gotten a single letter or phone call from anyone. I've tried reaching out to them through their social media accounts three different times and just get canned responses saying "someone will contact you." Meanwhile we're draining our savings just to keep up with bills. Has anyone experienced this kind of delay? What else can we do? The website just says "pending" when he logs in, and calling the number is completely useless - just automated responses and then it hangs up. We need this resolved ASAP as our rent is coming due again!

Welcome to New York unemployment hell. I waited 7 weeks last year before I saw a dime. Keep trying to call every single day, different times. Early morning (right when they open) worked for me eventually. Sorry you're going through this garbage system.

7 weeks?! That's insane. Did you have to do anything special to finally get through? We're desperate at this point.

I called literally 30-40 times before someone picked up. Just kept redialing like a maniac. The worst part is when they disconnect you after waiting on hold for an hour 🤬

Early morning calls are definitely the way to go. I got through at 8:05am after trying for days. Keep at it!

I was in this exact situation back in April. What finally worked for me was using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). It basically calls NYSDOL for you, stays on hold, and then connects you to an agent when someone picks up. Talking to a real person got my claim moving within days. Best money I've ever spent to get my benefits flowing. There's even a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds sketchy af. Has anyone else actually tried this thing? 🤔

0 coins

Not sketchy at all! It literally just does the holding for you. I was pending for 5 weeks, used Claimyr, got through to someone who fixed my claim on the spot. Beats calling 100 times a day yourself.

0 coins

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol... does this actually work?

0 coins

Yes it works! It literally just dials and waits on hold so you don't have to. Once I talked to a real person they fixed my claim that same day. I was about to give up before I found this.

hmmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

0 coins

The difference is it's super simple - it just handles the phone part. You still talk directly to NYSDOL yourself. My claim was stuck for over a month and speaking to an agent fixed it immediately.

Have you tried contacting your local state representative's office? That's what finally worked for me. They have special contacts at the unemployment office who can push claims through faster.

LISTEN UP! I work adjacent to this system (not for NYSDOL directly) and here's what you need to know about the current NY unemployment situation: Unfortunately right now there's a huge backlog of claims because they're still dealing with massive fraud issues from the past few years. Many claims get flagged for identity verification even when there's nothing wrong with them. Here are your best options: 1. Call repeatedly until you get through. Yes, it's horrible, but it's what works. Some people have success using claimyr.com to handle the calling/waiting part. 2. Contact your state assembly person AND state senator. Both of them. They can escalate cases. 3. If you're active on Twitter, the @NYSLabor account does actually escalate cases, but be persistent and DM them your info (no personal details in public tweets). 4. Check your online account daily for any notices or requests for additional documentation. 5. If you've been waiting over 3 weeks, it's likely your claim needs manual review. Only speaking to a human will resolve this. Hang in there. The system is deeply flawed but eventually does pay out.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! We'll try all of these. Can you elaborate on what you mean by 'identity verification'? Is there something specific we should ask about when we finally reach someone?

0 coins

Ask if the claim is pending ID verification or if there's an "eligibility issue" that needs to be resolved. Sometimes claims get randomly selected for additional verification even when everything is correct.

They "randomly select" like 80% of claims these days. Its total bs. They're just trying to slow down payments and hope people give up.

Your husband needs to certify each week even if he hasn't been approved yet! A lot of people miss this step. He should go in every Sunday and certify that he was available for work, looking for work, etc.

Amy Fleming

•

Yes, he's been doing that religiously every Sunday! Still nothing though...

Good! A lot of ppl miss that step and then wonder why they dont get backpay. At least when it finally does get approved, he'll get all those weeks at once.

check if his account shows "pending" or something else... mine said "pending" for 3 weeks and then suddenly changed to "additional information needed" but they NEVER contacted me about it, had to find it by checking the website myself

It just says "pending" every time he logs in. There's no other status or message about needing more info. It's so frustrating!

The EXACT same thing happened to me. I was stuck in limbo for 5 weeks. What finally worked was contacting my state senator's office. They have a staff person who deals with unemployment issues specifically. I sent them my info on a Monday and by Friday my claim was approved with all backpay. Try that route!

8 weeks? I'm on week 9 now... this is highway robbery! We pay into this system for years and then when we need it they make it impossible to get our own money back.

fr fr it's criminal how they treat people. like we're all just trying to scam the system or somethin

This is what I did to get my claim unstuck: 1. Called right at 8:00am when they open 2. If that didn't work, tried again at 4:30pm 3. Used all phone options that get to a human - sometimes pressing 9 works 4. Contacted my state assembly person 5. Found claimyr.com which let me skip the hold time Eventually got through and had everything fixed in one call. Keep pushing! The system is designed to make you give up.

Thank you! Which of these methods ended up working best for you?

Honestly, the Claimyr service was what finally got me through. After that, once I talked to a person, they fixed everything in like 10 minutes. It was just getting past the phone system that was impossible.

check your spam folder for emails!!! they sent me 3 emails asking for additional documents and they ALL went to spam. I almost lost my benefits bc of it.

The unemployment system in New York is an absolute JOKE. took me 11 weeks to get my first payment last year and thats WITH calling them every single day

Sasha Reese

•

Same here! And then they act like they're doing you a favor when they finally process your claim. Like ummmm this is literally MY MONEY I paid into the system???

0 coins

EXACTLY! and then they backdate it like we should be grateful. meanwhile my credit score tanked and i almost got evicted but ok 👌

Have u checked the online message center? Sometimes they send messages there but don't email you about them. Log in and check the inbox, might be something waiting there.

Amy Fleming

•

Yep, checked there too. Completely empty. It's like they've forgotten about us.

I feel your pain so much. This system is desgned to frustrate people into giving up. Don't! My advice: document EVERYTHING. Every time you call, every message, every attempt. That way when you finally reach someone you can prove you've been trying.

Took me 6 weeks and calling everyday (sometimes 20+ times) to get through. The NY unemployment system is straight up designed to make it hard to collect benefits. Keep at it!

try calling this number instead of the main one: [number removed]. its a special claims processing line and i got through waaaaay faster

This number doesn't work anymore, they changed it recently 😕

I got through on that line last week, it definitely still works! Just gotta keep trying

Make sure your husband continues to certify for benefits every week while waiting! You can claim all those weeks once approved but only if you've been certifying!

THIS!!!! So many people miss this step and lose out on thousands!

Do NOT give up. I was in the exact same boat, waited 5 weeks with no communication at all. Finally got through using claimyr.com (saves you from the hold time hell) and it turned out there was a simple flag on my account they fixed in 3 minutes. Got all my backpay two days later. The system is broken but keep fighting!

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I'm desperate at this point

100% worked for me. I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when I found this. You pay them, they call and wait on hold, then your phone rings when an actual human picks up. That one convo fixed everything for me.

Gonna try this tomorrow. Been trying to get through for weeks with no luck.
