Can't reach EDD on phone - claim filed Feb 25 still pending with no updates

I'm at my wits' end trying to reach someone at EDD about my husband's unemployment claim. He filed on February 25th (just over two weeks ago) and we've heard absolutely nothing back. The claim status just says 'pending' on UI Online with no explanation. We've tried calling the main number at least 20+ times over the past week at different times of day, but either get the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message or it just disconnects us after the automated menu. We desperately need to know if there's something wrong with the application or if we just need to wait longer. He was laid off from his construction management position after 6 years when the company lost a major contract. Is there a specific number or trick to actually speak with a real human? This limbo is making our anxiety skyrocket since our mortgage payment is coming up.

I was in the EXACT same boat last month. Filed on Jan 15th and couldn't reach anyone for THREE WEEKS. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr.com - it's a service that basically waits on hold for you and calls when an agent is available. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. It saved me hours of frustration. Turns out there was a simple ID verification issue that took the agent like 2 minutes to fix, but I would never have known without talking to someone.

Thank you for the suggestion! I hadn't heard of that service before. Did they actually help resolve your issue or just connect you to EDD? I'm desperate at this point and willing to try anything.

5 weeks?! That's terrifying. We've been trying early mornings (right when they open) and late afternoons. No luck either way. I'll keep trying though.

There are a few things to understand about EDD claims processing right now. First, February-March is always a high volume period which increases processing times. Second, new claims typically take 2-3 weeks for initial review BEFORE any potential issues are identified. If there's an issue, you'll see a notification in UI Online and possibly receive mail. As for reaching them by phone, there are specific tactics that can help: 1. Call the main line (1-800-300-5616) at 8:01am exactly when they open 2. If you get the "too many callers" message, hang up and immediately redial (don't wait) 3. Try calling on Wednesday or Thursday (usually lower volume than Monday/Tuesday) 4. Use the prompts 1-2-4 when navigating the menu Also, check if your husband has received ANY correspondence via mail or in his UI Online inbox. Sometimes they send interview notices or document requests that need action before the claim processes further.

Thank you for this detailed response! We haven't received any mail yet, but I'll double check his UI Online inbox to make sure nothing was missed. We've been trying early morning calls, but I'll specifically try the 1-2-4 prompt sequence and focus on Wednesday/Thursday. Really appreciate the help!

Have you tried the Ask EDD feature on the website? Sometimes you can get an answer that way without having to call.

We submitted a question through Ask EDD about 5 days ago but haven't heard anything back yet. Seems like everything is backed up right now.

I've been dealing with EDD for YEARS and let me tell you something - the phone system is DELIBERATELY designed to be frustrating!!! They don't want to talk to us! I had a claim back in 2023 that was stuck for 9 WEEKS because of some stupid "identity verification" issue that wasn't even my fault. The whole system is rigged against working people. You have to be absolutely RELENTLESS with calling. I'm talking 50+ calls PER DAY until you get through. That's the sad reality. Also, their stupid "too many callers" message is playing even when they're NOT full - it's just their way of managing call volume. I finally got through by calling at EXACTLY 8:00am and pressing 1-2-4 immediately. Had to do this for 3 days straight before getting through.

thats not true, they dont play the message when they arent full. i used to work for a call center (not edd but similar govt agency) and those systems dont lie about capacity. edd is just massively understaffed

Oh PLEASE! You clearly haven't dealt with EDD recently. I know MULTIPLE people who all got different responses calling at the EXACT same time. Some got the "too many callers" message while others got through to the queue. How do you explain that??

I was having the same issue with my claim a few weeks ago. What finally worked for me was calling the alternate number: 1-833-978-2511. It's their technical support line, but the reps can sometimes access basic claim information or transfer you to someone who can. I called at 1:15pm (after their lunch rush) and got through after only 5 attempts. Also, since your husband's claim was filed very recently, it's still within the normal processing timeframe. Most claims take 2-3 weeks minimum before any action happens, and if there are any missing documents or verification needed, it can add another 1-2 weeks. Check your husband's UI Online account and make sure all the documents are showing as "received" and there aren't any outstanding tasks in the dashboard. Hope this helps!

Thank you! I didn't know about the technical support line - we'll definitely try that today. And it's somewhat reassuring to hear that 2-3 weeks is still within normal timeframe. His UI Online account doesn't show any pending tasks, so I guess we're still in that initial processing window.

anyone else notice how they NEVER answer during the pandemic but now suddenly they sometimes do??

The pandemic had 10-20x the normal claim volume, which overwhelmed their outdated systems. They've since hired more staff and updated some technology, but they're still catching up. The difference in service now is notable, even if it's still not ideal.

Any luck with reaching someone? I'm curious if Claimyr worked for you if you decided to try it.

We actually tried the technical support number first (the 833 one someone mentioned) and got through after about 12 attempts! The rep couldn't directly help but transferred us to someone who could. Turns out there was a wage verification issue that needed to be sorted. Should be resolved within 3 business days according to the agent. Such a relief to finally know what's happening!

wait so did you get the issue fixed? or do you still need help?

Yes! Finally managed to get through using the technical support line after many attempts. There was a wage verification issue they needed to correct. Rep said payment should be processed within 3 business days. Fingers crossed!
