How long for new NY unemployment claim to process? Need to pay rent!

Wondering if anyone knows how long it takes to process a new unemployment claim in NY state. I got laid off from my job in March due to budget cuts and filed my claim on April 5th. It's now been almost four weeks and my claim still says "pending." I've been checking my account online every day but nothing has changed. Tried calling the unemployment office at least 15 times but can't get through to a human - just the same automated messages. I'm getting really worried because rent is due next week and I only have about $470 left in my checking account. My landlord already warned tenants he's not being flexible with late payments anymore. Has anyone filed recently and knows how long this typically takes? Is there something else I should be doing to speed things up?

Sophia Carter

it totally depends on your situation. took me 3 weeks to get my first payment last year but my roommate got his in 10 days. if there's ANY issue with your application (even a tiny mistake), they put you in review purgatory and good luck getting answers. the system is so broken rn 🤮

Ugh that's what I'm afraid of. Did you do anything special to make it go through faster?

nope just waited. but i think i got lucky cuz my claim was pretty straightforward. if you have multiple employers or worked out of state recently, it usually takes longer.

this is why the NY unemployment system is such garbage. in other states ppl get their money in days, we wait weeks or months 🤡

After being stuck in the NY unemployment limbo for almost 2 months with zero progress, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual agent on the phone. They basically wait on hold for you and then call you when they get a rep. Talking to someone directly got my claim moving and my payments started less than a week later. Best money I've ever spent considering how much backpay I was owed! Check out this video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds like a scam tbh. does this actually work? how much does it cost?

not a scam at all. they just hold your place in line so you don't have to call 100 times. the cost was worth it for me since i was about to get evicted and needed my benefits asap.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

no catch, it just connects you with an agent. after that it's still up to you to explain your situation and get it resolved. but actually talking to a human made all the difference for me.

I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

it's literally just a call service. they don't handle your claim or anything, just get you through to a rep so you can handle it yourself. they don't even see any of your personal info.

For me it took 6 weeks and I had to call them about 57 times before getting thru. the whole system is designed to make people give up. KEEP CALLING. call at 7:58am right before they open, thats how i finally got someone. good luck!

mine took 2 weeks but my coworker is still waiting after almost 3 months. i think it depends on if they need to verify anything. did you have any weird employment situations in the last 18 months? if yes, prepare to wait forever 😫

I worked a side gig as an independent contractor for a few months last summer, but I reported that on my application. Do you think that's causing the delay?

100% thats whats causing the delay. mixed income claims take WAY longer to process. they have to separately verify each source.

Here's what you need to know about the NY unemployment system right now: - Standard processing is supposed to be 2-3 weeks for straightforward claims - BUT many claims are taking 4-8 weeks due to backlog and staffing issues - If your claim has ANY complexity (multiple employers, out-of-state work, ID verification issues), it can take 12+ weeks - The online system won't tell you if there's a problem - you need to speak with an agent - Waiting for a letter in the mail is useless - by the time you get it, you've already lost weeks Your best option is to get a human on the phone. The standard advice about calling early doesn't work as well anymore because everyone knows that trick. I used claimyr.com which got me through to an agent after weeks of failed attempts. The agent was able to see that my claim was stuck because of a verification flag that wasn't even showing on my online account. Once you talk to someone, the process usually speeds up dramatically. For your immediate rent issue, you might want to contact local rent assistance programs - many counties still have emergency funds available.

THIS!!! having worked in the system before, I can confirm that talking to a human is the ONLY way to get unstuck. the online system is basically useless for anything but the most basic situations.

Thank you for this detailed breakdown! I'll check out that service. Do you remember how quickly things moved after you finally spoke with someone?

My payment hit my account 3 days after talking to the agent. They had to remove a flag on my account that I couldn't even see online. Without that call I'd probably still be waiting.

have you certified for benefits while waiting? you should be doing that every week even if your claim is still pending. a lot of people don't know that and lose weeks of backpay.

0 coins

-

Aaron Boston

Yes I've been certifying every Sunday! At least I'm doing something right 😅

good! so many ppl miss that step and then have to fight for backpay later. keep those receipts too in case something gets messed up.

you mgiht have an identity verification issue. happened to me and i didnt even know until i finally got thru to someone on the phone. check ur message inbox on the portal to see if theres anything about docusign or id.me

-

Aaron Boston

Just checked and don't see anything about ID verification in my messages. The last thing in my inbox is just the confirmation that they received my claim. Should I be worried?

if theres nothing about id verify then thats prolly not ur issue. could just be normal backlog. but still try to get someone on the phone, its the only way to know for sure whats going on.

Call your state representative's office! This was the only thing that worked for me after waiting 9 weeks. They have special contacts at unemployment and can escalate your claim. My benefits started flowing 5 days after my rep's office stepped in.

i second this! my assemblymans office got my claim fixed when nothing else worked. they have a backdoor to the system.

That's a great idea. I never thought about contacting my rep. Do you just call their local office?

Ellie Kim

Yep! Just call their district office and tell them you need help with an unemployment claim. They have staff who handle these issues all day long.

have u checked ur spam folder? sometimes they email u for more info and it goes to spam, then ur claim just sits there forever cuz u never responded 🤦‍♂️

Good point! Just checked spam and junk folders but nothing from unemployment in there.

For what its worth, I filed in February and got my first payment exactly 5 weeks later. No calls or anything special, it just suddenly changed from pending to approved. Hang in there.

FYI if you're really desperate for rent money while waiting, you can apply for emergency assistance through your county's DSS/HRA office. They have programs specifically for people waiting on unemployment benefits. It's usually a one-time payment but could help with immediate rent crisis.

-

Aaron Boston

Thank you, I'll look into that! Do you know if that's something I can apply for online?

Most counties have online applications now. Google "[your county name] emergency rent assistance" and it should come up. The process is usually faster than unemployment too.

dont waste ur time calling that useless 888 number. i found a secret phone number that actually works! DM me if u want it

i dont want them to shut it down if too many ppl use it. its worked for me 3 times

This is BS. There's no "secret number" - just people trying to scam desperate folks. I work adjacent to the system and all calls route through the same call center.

hate to say it but sometimes it comes down to luck of the draw on who processes ur claim. had 2 claims during covid, 1st took 7 weeks and 2nd took 9 days. exact same info on both. makes no sense.

Your claim is probably in the 'pending purgatory' because of the side gig you mentioned. They have to determine if you're eligible for regular UI or need to go through a different system. Without talking to someone, it'll just sit there forever. I was in the same situation and used claimyr.com to get through - fixed my issue in one call after waiting over 3 months. Hope this helps!

0 coins

-

Aaron Boston

Oh wow, 3 months is insane! Was your backpay processed all at once when they finally fixed it?

0 coins

-

Ella Cofer

Yep, got all my backpay in one lump sum about 5 days after they fixed the issue. Suddenly had like $11k in my account. Almost fell off my chair lol.

i know this sounds weird but try tweeting at NYSDOL. their social media team actually responds and can sometimes escalate cases. worked for my sister.

I've seen this work too! They hate the public embarrassment so social media complaints get priority treatment 😂
