How long after BY (Benefit Year) end date will I get NY unemployment payments again?
My benefit year just ended last week and I had to reapply for NY unemployment as instructed. I submitted everything on Monday including all the employment info they asked for. The website said my claim is being processed, but I'm wondering how long this typically takes before payments start coming in again? I was receiving benefits regularly before my BYE date, and I'm worried about making rent if there's a long gap. Has anyone gone through this process recently? How many weeks did you have to wait after reapplying at your BYE date?

When I reapplied after my benefit year ended in February 2025, it took exactly 10 business days before payments started again. The system needs to verify your employment history from the past 18 months, so that's why there's a waiting period. Make sure your claim shows as "pending" and not "incomplete" on the website - big difference. As long as you continue to certify weekly during this waiting period, you should receive backpay for those weeks once the new claim is processed.

Thanks for the info! Mine does say "pending" so I guess that's good. Did you have to do anything special during those 10 days or just wait and keep certifying? I'm so stressed about the gap in payments.

Oh no, I really hope mine doesn't take that long! Did they at least backpay you for those 3 weeks once it was approved?

yeah they did backpay eventually but it was super stressful waiting. they sent all payments at once after approval

The timeline varies considerably based on your specific circumstances. Typically, if there are no issues with your application and all information is verified without problems, you can expect to wait 2-3 weeks before payments resume. However, this process can take longer if: 1. There are discrepancies in your reported employment history 2. Your previous employers don't respond promptly to NYSDOL verification requests 3. You worked in multiple states during your base period 4. The system flags your application for manual review During this waiting period, it's crucial that you continue to certify weekly. Any eligible weeks will be paid retroactively once your new claim is approved. Also, check your message inbox daily, as NYSDOL often requests additional documentation there rather than by email or mail.

This is really helpful, thank you! I only worked for one employer in NY during the base period, so hopefully that makes things simpler. I've been certifying every Sunday as usual. Will definitely keep checking my inbox daily.

Same boat. My BYE was 3 weeks ago and still nothing. The worst part is you can't get anyone on the phone to tell you what's happening!!!

That's exactly what I'm worried about! Have you been calling the main number? I tried twice yesterday and gave up after being on hold for over an hour each time.

Been trying EVERY DAY for 2 weeks. Can't get through at all. Either busy signal or disconnects after hold. SO FRUSTRATING!!

After struggling to reach someone at NYSDOL about my BYE reapplication (which was stuck in limbo for almost 4 weeks), I tried this service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. It basically calls for you and holds your place in line. Saved me days of frustration because the agent was able to see my claim was stuck in a verification queue and pushed it through while I was on the phone. Got my backpay two days later. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE or their website claimyr.com

Wow, I've never heard of this before. That actually sounds really helpful because I've been stressing about not being able to talk to anyone. Did they explain why your claim was stuck? I'm going to check out that video, thanks!

Yes, turns out my former employer hadn't responded to their verification request (which is supposed to be automatic), so my claim was just sitting there. The agent manually verified my employment history while I was on the phone and released the hold on my claim. Definitely worth getting to actually talk to someone who can help.

WHY does this process have to be SO COMPLICATED??? I went through this in January and it took 5 FULL WEEKS before I saw a penny!! The website said 2-3 weeks but that's a LIE. And they expect us to survive how exactly??? The whole system is designed to make people give up!!

That's not necessarily true for everyone. My reapplication after BYE took exactly 17 days from submission to first payment. The system is actually reasonably efficient when there are no verification issues. Most longer delays happen when there are inconsistencies in work history or when former employers don't respond promptly to verification requests.

Well GOOD FOR YOU that yours went smoothly! Most people I know waited 4+ weeks so maybe YOU got lucky instead of me being unlucky! They should at least be HONEST about timeframes instead of saying 2-3 weeks when it's really 4-6 for most people!!!

I process these claims daily, and I can offer some insight on what affects the timeline: 1. Clean reapplications typically process in 14-21 days 2. Claims requiring additional identity verification add about 7-10 days 3. Claims with multiple employers in the base period take longer to verify 4. Missing or incomplete work history information causes significant delays To improve your chances of faster processing: - Make sure all wages and employers from the past 18 months are accurately reported - Upload any requested documents immediately (check your inbox daily) - Certify each week even while waiting for approval - If you do need to call, try early morning (7:30am) or late afternoon (4:30pm) on Wednesdays or Thursdays for shorter wait times The system will retroactively pay for all eligible weeks once approved, so you won't lose any benefits during the waiting period.

This is incredibly helpful! I really appreciate the insider perspective. I only had one employer during the base period and I included all the information they asked for. If it goes beyond 3 weeks, I'll definitely try calling during those specific times. Fingers crossed it processes smoothly!

btw did u get that message on ur account that says "waiting week" or something? cuz i had that and it meant they don't pay u for the first week after reapplying. kinda sucks

Wait, what? No, I didn't see anything about a waiting week. Does that mean they'll skip paying me for a whole week? That would be really bad timing with rent coming up.

Just to clarify, the waiting week policy in NY means the first week of a new benefit year is unpaid. However, if you're reapplying after a BYE date on an existing claim where you've already served a waiting week, you shouldn't have to serve another waiting week unless there's been a break in your claim of more than three months. The system should automatically recognize this and not impose another waiting week.

Quick update on processing times - I've noticed from forums and my own experience that NYSDOL seems to be moving faster on BYE reapplications in 2025 compared to last year. Several people reported 10-14 day processing times recently, which is better than the 3-4 weeks that was common before. I think they've streamlined their verification process. That said, always plan for longer just in case your claim needs additional review.

This gives me some hope! Today is day 5 since I submitted my reapplication, so maybe I'll see movement next week. I'll definitely keep certifying and checking my messages every day. Thanks for the positive update!

Has anyone had their weekly benefit amount change after reapplying at BYE? I'm worried mine might go down since I worked less this past year.

Yes, this is a common concern. Your benefit amount is recalculated based on your base period wages when you reapply after a BYE date. If you worked fewer hours or earned less during your new base period compared to your previous one, your weekly benefit amount could indeed decrease. Conversely, if you earned more, it could increase. The system calculates this automatically based on reported wages from your employers.

I'm actually wondering about this too. My hours were reduced for part of last year before I was laid off completely. Does anyone know if partial employment during the base period affects the calculation?
