NY unemployment not paying for weeks after BYE date - answered their email but still nothing
So I hit my Benefit Year End (BYE) date about a month ago. I called NYSDOL and got my unemployment put back on (or so I thought). Then about 3 weeks ago, they sent me an email asking about 2 weeks I didn't claim - the week right after my BYE date and the following week. I responded right away explaining that I was still eligible and needed those payments. It's been 3 weeks since I answered their email, and they STILL haven't released the money or sent me any follow-up! My account just shows those weeks as pending but nothing's happening. I'm starting to get really worried because my rent is due soon and I was counting on that money. Has this happened to anyone else after their BYE date? How long did it take to get resolved?

This exact thing happened to me in February 2025. After my BYE date, there's always a review process where they verify you're still eligible. Even though you called, their system probably flagged those weeks for additional verification. The email response you sent likely went into their queue, but they're seriously backed up right now. What worked for me was sending a secure message through the NY.gov account messaging center specifically mentioning the weeks that were pending and referencing the email they sent you. Be sure to include all the details - the dates of the weeks in question, that you responded to their email, and that you're experiencing financial hardship. It took about 4-5 days after sending that message before my payments were released.

•Thanks for the advice! I didn't think to use the messaging center - I thought responding to their email would be enough. I'll send a secure message right now with all those details. Did you have to upload any documents or anything to prove your eligibility? Or just explain the situation?

•After my BYE date last month, I was stuck in the same situation. Calling was impossible - I tried for days without getting through. I finally used Claimyr.com to get past the phone system and spoke with a rep in about 20 minutes. They fixed my pending weeks while I was on the phone. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Worth it to get this resolved quickly, especially when rent is coming up. The agent told me they're dealing with a system update that's causing delays for people right after their BYE dates.

The BYE date transition has been particularly problematic in the NYSDOL system since they updated their processing software in January 2025. Here's what's happening: 1. When you reach your BYE date, the system automatically initiates a review process 2. Even though you called and a representative reactivated your claim, there's a secondary verification process for the specific weeks in question 3. The email response system and the claims processing system are unfortunately not well-integrated Your response to their email likely went to a separate queue than your claim file. The best approach is three-pronged: 1. Send a secure message through your NY.gov account as suggested 2. Call again specifically asking for the BYE transition team (use this exact terminology) 3. Continue certifying weekly while this gets resolved Typically, these issues are resolved within 4-6 weeks, but you shouldn't have to wait that long if you're proactive.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! This makes so much sense now. I'll definitely ask specifically for the "BYE transition team" when I call. Is there a particular day or time that's better for getting through? I've been trying mornings but no luck so far.

Update: I've been trying all week to get through on the phone with zero luck. Sent a secure message through my account 4 days ago but haven't heard anything back. I'm going to keep certifying like everyone suggested but I'm getting really worried about making rent this month. This is so frustrating!

•I've been through the BYE date nightmare TWICE now with NYSDOL. Their system is BROKEN and they know it!!!! Last year they let me go 8 weeks without payment after my BYE date even though I was clearly eligible the whole time. The worst part is they act like it's not a big deal when people are literally unable to pay for FOOD and SHELTER because of THEIR errors! The secure message system is a BLACK HOLE - they rarely respond! And the regular phone line is completely useless. If you're desperate like I was, look into that Claimyr service someone mentioned above - I was skeptical but it actually worked for me last time when nothing else did. The advocate I got was able to escalate my claim and I had my money within 48 hours.

Quick follow-up since many are having this issue: The specific reason this happens is that after your BYE date, the NYSDOL system requires a new monetary determination even if you have remaining benefits on your claim. When you called, they probably initiated this process, but didn't specifically release the pending weeks. The email they sent was part of their verification process, but responding to it doesn't automatically release the payments. It just provides the information they need for their review. When you call again, specifically say: "I need to speak with someone about releasing pending payments after my BYE date redetermination." This specific phrasing helps get you to the right department.

Anyone have the secret phone number for nysdol? I heard theres a different one that actually gets answered. My cousin's roommate got through right away using it when she had the same issue after her BYE date.

•There is no "secret phone number" - that's a common misconception. The NYSDOL uses a unified phone system. What does happen is that certain phone options route you to different queues. For BYE date issues specifically, when you call the main number, you should press 2, then 1, then 2 again when prompted. This routing has a slightly better chance of connecting you with a claims specialist who can handle BYE date transitions.

FINAL UPDATE: I finally got this resolved! After trying for days to get through on the phone with no luck, I decided to try that Claimyr service someone mentioned. I was connected to a NYSDOL agent in about 30 minutes. The agent explained that my account was stuck in what they call a "BYE date review queue" and that my email response had been received but not processed. She manually released my pending payments while I was on the phone! The money should be in my account in 1-2 business days. For anyone else stuck after their BYE date - definitely mention specifically that you're dealing with pending payments after a BYE date when you talk to someone. Apparently that helps them know exactly what needs to be fixed. Such a relief to finally have this resolved!

•Glad you got it resolved! This is becoming a very common issue with the new system. For anyone else reading this in the future, here's a quick checklist for BYE date payment issues: 1. Continue certifying every week even if previous weeks are pending 2. Respond to any emails/questionnaires immediately 3. Send a secure message through your NY.gov account 4. When calling, specifically mention "BYE date payment review" 5. Ask the representative to check if you're in the "BYE review queue" 6. Request that they manually release any eligible pending payments The system should get better over time as they work out these transition issues.
