NY unemployment BYE date suddenly reduced by 10 days and payment stopped - what's going on?
I'm freaking out a little bit here. I just checked my NY unemployment account and noticed my benefit year end (BYE) date suddenly went from 92 days remaining to only 82 days - and my weekly payment didn't come through! I didn't get any notification about this change. Has anyone else experienced their BYE date randomly decreasing? Also, I just had a fair hearing last week about some previous issues with my claim which I'm pretty sure I won (the judge seemed to agree with everything I said), but nothing's been updated in my account yet. Could these two things be related? I really need this money for rent next week.

•Did you have to call them or did it just fix itself? I'm worried because my rent is due soon.

The BYE date reduction could be related to your fair hearing. When NYSDOL is reviewing a claim (which happens after hearings), they sometimes temporarily adjust benefit periods in the system. The payment pause is standard procedure during claim reviews. Fair hearing decisions typically take 2-4 weeks to be fully processed and implemented in the system. If the judge ruled in your favor at the hearing, you'll likely receive any back payments owed once the decision is officially recorded. I'd recommend checking your online message center and document section daily for updates. The system often updates overnight between 7pm-7am.

•Thanks for explaining! I had no idea they could freeze payments during review. Do you know if I should still certify weekly even though they're not paying me right now?

•Yes, absolutely continue certifying every week even if payments are paused! This is critically important. If you stop certifying, you'll lose eligibility for those weeks permanently, even if the hearing decision is in your favor. The system will retroactively process payments for properly certified weeks once the review is complete.

They ALWAYS do this!!!! The system is deliberately confusing to make people give up on their benefits!!!! I had my BYE date change THREE TIMES during my claim and each time I had to fight for WEEKS to get it fixed. And guess what? Every single agent tells you something different. One says it's normal, one says it's a glitch, one says it's because of some obscure rule they never told you about!!!! I bet they're hoping you'll miss a certification while you're confused and then they can cut you off completely!

•I don't think they're trying to be confusing on purpose... the system is just old and breaks down a lot. My cousin works in state IT (not unemployment but another agency) and says they're using computers from like 20 years ago for some stuff.

I was in almost this exact situation in January! My BYE date suddenly changed after a hearing (which I also won). I spent 3 days trying to reach someone at the unemployment office with no luck - their call volume is insane right now. Finally I found out about Claimyr.com which gets you through to an actual NYSDOL agent within 30-45 minutes instead of trying for days. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent explained that after hearings they do a full claim review which sometimes causes temporary changes to BYE dates and payment holds. She fixed my account on the spot and released my payment. My BYE date went back to normal the next day. They should have explained this would happen!

•Thank you so much for this! I've been trying to call all day and can't get through. I'll definitely check out that service - at this point I just need to talk to someone who can explain what's happening with my account.

This is a common issue after fair hearings. Here's what's happening technically: 1. After a hearing, your claim enters "Administrative Review Status" (code AR in their system) 2. During AR status, the system temporarily recalculates your BYE date based on a standard formula while your actual eligibility is being determined 3. Payments are held in pending status during this review 4. Once the official decision is entered (which takes 10-15 business days from hearing date), your account returns to normal status Your BYE date reduction is almost certainly temporary. The system will restore the correct date once the hearing decision is processed. Keep certifying weekly, and you'll receive retroactive payments for any eligible weeks once the review completes. Pro tip: After the 10th business day from your hearing, check your account between 3am-5am - that's when the overnight batch processing updates accounts with hearing decisions.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I had no idea there was an "Administrative Review Status" or that my claim would go into this special mode after a hearing. The unemployment handbook they sent me doesn't explain any of this! I'll keep certifying and check early morning as you suggested.

•No, I haven't started any new work. I've been reporting the same job search activities every week and nothing has changed on my end.

Try logging out and logging back in sometimes the system just shows wrong info my bye date was wrong for 3 days then fixed itself

•I've tried logging out and back in multiple times, and even tried a different browser, but it still shows 82 days instead of 92. I'm going to keep checking though.

Quick update for anyone facing this issue in 2025: NYSDOL recently updated their system to show an alert banner when your claim is under review after a hearing. The banner should appear at the top of your dashboard explaining the temporary changes to your account. If you don't see this banner but are experiencing BYE date changes after a hearing, it could indicate a synchronization issue between the new and legacy systems. In that case, you should report it through both: 1. The online message center (select "Technical Issue" as the category) 2. The technical support line at 888-209-8124 (press 2 for claim issues, then 5 for technical problems) This helps them identify and fix these synchronization issues faster.

•I definitely don't have any banner on my dashboard. I'll report it through the message center right away. Thank you for this information!

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get this resolved? Did you try calling them?

•Yes! I finally got through to an agent who confirmed exactly what people here said - my account was under review because of the hearing. My payment was released yesterday and my BYE date is back to normal now. Thanks everyone for your help! For anyone else reading this with a similar problem, definitely keep certifying weekly even if payments are paused during review.
