Finally heard from NY unemployment specialist about 14 weeks of backpay - will it really come in 3 days?
Just wanted to share some hope with everyone struggling with backpay issues. After calling repeatedly for MONTHS, I finally connected with an actual specialist at NY unemployment today who told me my 14 weeks of backpay should be released within 3 days. I'm trying not to get too excited since I've heard similar promises before, but this person seemed to actually understand my situation and even confirmed they were putting notes in my file. I know the process can be incredibly long and frustrating (trust me, I've been there!), but don't give up. Even if you have to call everyday, do so until the matter you're dealing with is resolved. It took me calling almost daily for two weeks straight to finally get through to someone who could help. Has anyone else been promised backpay release dates? Did they actually come through? I'll update this post when/if I see the money hit my account.

•I literally just kept calling. Like 20+ times a day sometimes. It's ridiculous we have to do this but it eventually worked.

I wouldn't count on that 3 day timeline, unfortunately. I was told the same thing in November 2024 about my 8 weeks of backpay, and it took 3 WEEKS, not 3 days. The system is incredibly backlogged right now. That said, you're on the right track by getting a specialist to actually note your file - that's what eventually made mine go through.

•Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. At least you eventually got yours though. Did they pay it all at once or in chunks?

•Mine came through as one lump sum deposit. Just prepare yourself - there was zero notification. It just showed up in my account randomly on a Tuesday morning.

Dont get ur hopes up TOO high. My neighbor was told he'd get his backpay in 3-5 days and its been 3 MONTHS and still nothing!!! The whole system is broken. I swear the "specialists" just tell u what u want to hear to get u off the phone.

•While delays definitely happen, three months is unusual if a specialist has specifically noted the account for backpay release. Your neighbor should call again and ask for a supervisor to review the case. Sometimes claims get stuck in a verification queue and need to be manually released.

After waiting 6 weeks for backpay with no luck getting through on phones, I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to a NY unemployment rep in about 20 minutes! Totally worth it. They basically keep dialing for you until they get through, then call you when they have an agent. My backpay was processed two days after talking to the specialist. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this legit? I'm desperate but wary of services related to unemployment. Did you have to give them your SSN or anything???

•They don't ask for any sensitive info like SSN. They just need your phone number to call you back when they get an agent. You still talk directly with the unemployment office yourself. I was skeptical too but it worked for me.

The backpay timing really depends on what was causing the delay in the first place. If it was a simple administrative hold, 3 days is possible. If there was an identity verification issue or employer dispute, it could take 2-3 weeks even after a specialist approves it. Make sure you got the specialist's name and ID number - this is crucial if you need to follow up. Also, check your payment history page daily rather than waiting for an email notification, as the online system updates faster than notifications go out.

•I didn't get the ID number! But I have the name. Mine was delayed because they needed additional wage verification which I submitted back in December. The specialist confirmed they have everything they need now.

•That's good news. Wage verification issues typically resolve faster than eligibility disputes once all documentation is processed. The name should be sufficient, but if you don't see movement within a week, call back and reference the previous conversation date along with the specialist's name.

I'm in the EXACT same situation!!! 13 weeks of backpay for me. A specialist told me 3-5 business days last Thursday. Today is day 4 and nothing yet. I'm literally checking my account every hour. This whole process has been a NIGHTMARE!!! The stress is making me physically ill. Did you get yours yet? Please update!!!

•Nothing yet, it's only been 1 day since they told me. I'll definitely update when/if it comes through. Hang in there - sounds like we're in the same boat!

What time of day did you call to get through? I've been trying mornings with no luck. And which number exactly? There are so many different ones on the NY unemployment website and none of them seem to connect to actual humans. I'm going on 7 weeks of backpay issues and getting desperate.

•I had the most luck calling right when they open at 8am or between 1-2pm. I think a lot of the reps go to lunch around noon and come back around 1, so the wait times seem shorter then. I used the main claims number (888-209-8124). Be prepared to spend a lot of time on hold though.

Quick update for anyone following this thread - I noticed the OP hasn't responded in a few days. I just want to clarify something important about backpay: If you're waiting on a large amount (10+ weeks), they sometimes release it in 2-3 separate payments over a 7-10 day period rather than all at once. This is normal and doesn't mean you won't get all of it. If you see a partial payment, don't panic - the rest is likely coming in a separate transaction.

UPDATE: It's been 5 days and nothing yet. Called again today and waited 1.5 hours to speak to someone. They said my backpay was "in process" and that I should see it "soon" but wouldn't give me an exact timeline. Frustrating, but at least it's supposedly moving forward. Will keep updating.

•OMG same EXACT thing happened to me!!! They keep saying "in process" or "in the queue" but won't give a date. It's been 8 days since I was promised "3-5 days" for payment. This is INSANE!

FINAL UPDATE: Just wanted to close the loop on this. My backpay finally came through today - 9 days after speaking with the specialist (not the 3 days promised). It came as two separate deposits a few hours apart. So for anyone still waiting - it does eventually happen, but be prepared for longer timeframes than what they tell you. Don't give up!

•CONGRATS!!! This gives me hope! I'm on day 11 of waiting. Did you do anything special to make it happen or just wait?

•Just waited, though I did call twice during that time to check status. Not sure if that helped or not. Fingers crossed yours comes soon!
