Filed new NY unemployment claim but can't certify for final week of old claim - help!
I just filed a new claim yesterday but accidentally did it too soon, and now I can't certify for my last week of benefits from my previous claim period! 🤦🏾♀️ The system won't let me go back and complete the final certification for that last payment. Has anyone dealt with this before? Is there anything I can do to still get that last payment from my old claim????? Really need that money and feeling stupid for filing the new claim before certifying.

Seriously?? So I lose an entire week of benefits just because I filed one day early? That can't be right...

You haven't lost your money permanently. You need to call NYSDOL to have them manually process your final week certification. This is actually a common issue. The online system won't allow you to certify for your old claim once a new one is established, but the agents can override this and process the payment for you.

Thank you! That's a relief. Do you know if they'll be able to see that I was eligible for that week without me having to prove anything?

Yes, they'll be able to see your claim history and verify your eligibility for that final week. Just explain exactly what happened - that you filed a new claim before certifying for the final week of your previous claim period. Make sure to have your NY.gov ID and PIN ready when you call.

I HATE when this happens! The whole system is designed to make us lose money! They NEVER tell you not to file a new claim until after you've certified for all weeks on your old claim. So many people make this mistake and then they make it IMPOSSIBLE to fix without spending hours on the phone. It's like they WANT us to give up!!!

I know right?? There should at least be a warning message or something before letting you file a new claim!

To fix this issue, you need to contact NYSDOL directly. Call their main customer service line at 888-209-8124 between 8am-6pm Monday-Friday. When you reach an agent, explain that you filed a new claim before certifying for your final eligible week under your previous claim period. Request them to process a manual certification for that missed week. Important: Be prepared with: 1. Your NY.gov ID and PIN 2. The specific week dates you need to certify for 3. Work search records for that week Alternatively, you can use the secure message center in your online account to explain the situation, but phone is usually faster for this particular issue.

Thank you so much for this detailed information! I'll try calling them tomorrow morning right when they open. Should I keep trying the whole day if I can't get through? This is really stressful.

For multiple missed weeks, you'll need to file what's called a "Request for Back Credit" for each week. The agent can help with this when you call. You'll need to provide good cause for why you didn't certify on time (like not understanding the system, tech issues, etc). They can backdate certifications up to one year, but you need to speak with a representative directly.

I had this same issue in January and finally got it resolved. Here's what worked: call exactly at 8:00am, press 1, then 1 again, then 1 again when prompted. Then wait for a real person. Be ready to wait at least an hour. When you finally reach someone, explain CLEARLY that you filed a new claim before certifying for your final week on the old claim. They'll verify your identity, check your record, and should be able to process that payment manually. The money showed up in my account about 3 business days later. Don't give up!

That's so helpful, thank you! I'll definitely try this approach tomorrow morning at 8am sharp.

Wait I'm confused... if you file a new claim does that automatically end your old one?? I thought they were separate things? I'm about to file a new claim too but I don't want to mess anything up

Yes, filing a new claim will effectively close your previous claim in the system, preventing you from certifying for any remaining weeks online. Always make sure to certify for all eligible weeks under your current claim before filing a new one. If your benefit year is ending and you need to file a new claim, wait until after you've certified for your final week of the current benefit year.

UPDATE: I finally got through! Called at 8am exactly like suggested and waited about 45 minutes. The rep was actually really nice and said this happens all the time. She manually processed my certification for the last week and said I should see the payment in 3-5 business days. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help!

Great to hear! For anyone else reading this thread with a similar issue: always make sure to certify for all eligible weeks of your current claim before filing a new one. If your benefit year is ending, certify for that final week first, then file your new claim.
