Missed one week of NY unemployment certification in July - can I still claim backpay?

So I accidentally messed up and didn't complete my weekly certification for one week in July 2025. I was dealing with a family emergency and it completely slipped my mind. I've been certifying regularly every week since then, but I just realized I'm missing benefits for that one week. Is there any way to still get backpay for that missed week? Has anyone successfully claimed benefits retroactively? I really need that money and don't want to lose a whole week's worth of benefits because of one mistake.

Yes, you can request retroactive payment for a missed week! You need to call NYSDOL directly and explain your situation. They have a backdate request process specifically for missed certifications. Make sure you have the exact dates of the missed week ready when you call. Generally, you can request backdating for up to a month after the missed week, so if it was in July and it's still August, you should be fine.

Thank you so much! Do you know what number I should call? Whenever I try the main unemployment number I just get stuck in the automated system.

Do you remember what the form was called? Was it something you had to download from the website or did they mail it to you?

This EXACT thing happened to me last month!! I was literally pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to fix it. The system is SOOO frustrating. I missed certifying because my internet was out for 3 days and by the time it came back online it was too late. I ended up calling like 20 times and couldn't get through to anyone. Does anyone know if there's a better phone number to call than the main one? I'm still missing that week's payment!!

I had trouble getting through on the phone too until I tried using Claimyr. It's a service that calls NYSDOL for you and connects you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of redial frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. I was skeptical but it actually worked for my backdating request when I missed two weeks in June.

my cousin works for nysdol and she says they can backdate payments but you need a good reason. family emergency counts. just be really specific about what happened when you call them.

The official policy for missed certifications is that you can request backdating within 30 days of the week in question. After that, it becomes much more difficult. You'll need to complete Form TC-403E "Request for Backdated Claims" which you can access through your NY.gov account under "Forms and Documents." When filling out the form, be very specific about why you missed the certification - include dates, circumstances, and any documentation of your family emergency if possible. The more detail you provide, the better your chances of approval. After submitting the form, you'll receive an email confirmation and typically hear back within 10-14 business days. If approved, the payment will be processed with your next regular payment cycle.

Thank you so much for this detailed info! I just found the TC-403E form and I'm filling it out now. Do you know if I should continue certifying normally for current weeks while I wait for this to be processed?

Yes, absolutely continue your regular weekly certifications without interruption. The backdated claim process is separate and won't affect your current claim weeks.

I'm in the same boat but missed TWO weeks in June because I thought my benefit year had ended but it actually hadn't. Anyone know if there's a limit to how many weeks you can claim retroactively? So annoying that the system doesn't send reminders when you miss certifying!

You can request multiple missed weeks as long as they're all within the 30-day window. In your case, if it's already August, you might be outside that window for June weeks. You can still try, but be prepared that they might deny the request based on timeframe.

Update: I just tried using Claimyr from the link above and actually got through to a rep in like 20 minutes!!! They're processing my backdated week right now. The lady I spoke to said as long as it's within 30 days they can usually approve it, especially if you had an emergency. THANK YOU SO MUCH for that suggestion!!

That's amazing! I'm going to try that too. So tired of calling and getting nowhere.

my friend got backdated for 3 weeks he missed but that was cuz he was in the hospital and had paperwork to prove it. family emergency might be harder to prove unless you have something to back it up

Just wanted to update everyone - I was able to get through using Claimyr (thanks for that tip!) and spoke with a representative. They helped me submit the TC-403E form right over the phone. The agent said since it's still within the 30-day window and I had a valid reason, it should be approved within 7-10 business days. Such a relief! I'll update again once I actually receive the payment.

Great news! Yes, please let us know when the payment comes through. It's always helpful to hear success stories with the system.
