Forgot to certify for NY unemployment this week - am I out of luck?
So I completely blanked and forgot to do my weekly certification on Sunday. I usually set a reminder but got caught up with my kid's soccer tournament and it slipped my mind. I've been claiming for about 4 months now, never missed a week before. Realized my mistake this morning when I checked my bank account and saw no deposit. I tried logging in to do it late but the system wouldn't let me. Does this mean I forfeit this week's payment entirely? Can I still get backdated for the missed week or do I just have to wait till next Sunday to certify again? Really stressing about this since I'm counting on that money for my electric bill due Friday. Anyone know the process for handling missed certifications with NY unemployment?

You can certify for last week when you do this weeks certification. The option should be there when you go to claim weekly benefits. You'll still get paid, just a week behind schedule.

•Thank you so much! That's a relief. So I'll just get both payments next week then?

•Yep! You'll get both payments, just on a delay. they'll probably come through separately tho

•This is correct. I've done this before. When you login to certify next time, it'll ask if you want to claim for prior weeks too.

When I had this same exact problem I tried calling for days with no luck. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an actual agent in about 40 mins. They called and waited on hold then connected me when someone picked up. The agent on the phone was able to backdate my certification immediately and I got paid like 2 days later. Talking to a real person was the best money ive spent since I got my benefits unlocked right away instead of waiting. Here's a video showing how it works https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•seems sketchy af... another company trying to profit off desperate people 🤔

•Nah not sketchy at all. They just call and wait on hold so you don't have to. When an agent answers they connect you. Saved me hours of frustration and got my problem fixed immediately.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've spent days trying to get thru to someone

•Yeah it actually works. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying to get through for 3 days straight. Got a callback with an actual agent and fixed my certification issue in like 10 mins.

•I tried this last month when I had an identity verification issue. It actually worked. Got my claim fixed after weeks of no response.

This hapened to me too! Missing one week isn't a huge deal. When you log in next time it will ask if you want to claim for previous weeks. Just say yes and answer the questions like normal. You'll get the backpay but it'll be like 3-4 days after your regular payment hits.

I've been on NY unemployment for 8 months now and the system is actually pretty forgiving for missed certifications, as long as you don't make a habit of it. You can claim for missed weeks going back like 3-4 weeks. Just make sure when you login next Sunday you look for the option to claim for additional weeks. It might be a separate button or it might ask you after you finish your regular certification.

•That's reassuring! Their website is so confusing sometimes I wasn't sure if I'd lost that week completely.

Actually contrary to what other ppl are saying, if u certify late u might get flagged for review. happened to me and I was stuck without payment for 3 weeks until they reviewed my claim. If u already tried and the system wouldn't let u, u might need to call them directly.

•Oh no, seriously? How did you finally resolve it? Should I try calling them tomorrow?

•Yeah call ASAP. If u get someone on the phone they can usually fix it right away. But good luck getting through - took me like 50 calls over 2 days

Here's what you need to know about missed certifications with NY unemployment: First, don't panic. The system allows for late certifications up to a point. When you log in next Sunday, you should see an option to certify for previous weeks. The system typically allows you to go back and claim missed weeks for up to a month (though the official policy might be different). If for some reason you DON'T see this option, then you absolutely need to speak with an agent. This could indicate your claim has a flag or some other issue. If you need to speak with someone, save yourself hours of frustration and use claimyr.com - it's a service that calls unemployment for you, waits on hold, and then connects you when an agent answers. Getting a human on the phone is the fastest way to fix certification issues. One more thing: if this is your first missed certification, you're usually fine. But multiple missed weeks can trigger a review of your claim which can lead to payment delays. Good luck with getting your payment! Don't wait too long to address this.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'll definitely check for the option to certify for last week when I do my certification on Sunday. If I don't see it I'll try calling.

Pro tip: set multiple reminders on your phone. I certify every sunday at 7:30am SHARP. never miss it. the unemployment system is looking for ANY excuse to deny benefits, dont give them one 🤷♀️

the same thing happened to me last month and i ended up having to CALL them because the website wouldn't let me certify late. was on hold for 2.5 hours before giving up. next day tried again and got someone after 3 hours who fixed it immediately. such a waste of time but at least i got my money eventually

•OMG 3 hours on hold? No way I could do that with my kids running around. Did you try using claimyr.com? My friend used it and said it was amazing.

lol welcome to the ny unemployment system where everything is made up and the rules dont matter 🤡 sometimes u can certify late, sometimes u cant, sometimes they pay u, sometimes they make u wait 6 weeks and provide dna samples and your firstborn child

•LMAO this actually made me feel better about the whole thing. The system is ridiculous.

•I've been on and off unemployment for 2 years now. The key is documenting EVERYTHING. Screenshots, call logs, emails, the works. System is busted af

As a tip, I've found that telling the system you were "unable to certify due to a technical issue" rather than "forgot" tends to get processed more smoothly. Just saying 👀

make sure u dont wait more than 2 weeks to certify for a missed week. After that it gets much harder to claim those benefits without going through an appeal process

•Good to know! I'll definitely make sure to handle it this Sunday then.
