Do email addresses need to match when using ID.me for NY unemployment verification?
I'm trying to verify my identity using ID.me for my NY unemployment claim and I'm confused about something. When I first filed my claim in January, I used my old email address. Now I'm trying to set up ID.me verification and I'm using my current email address. Does the email I use for ID.me have to match the one I originally used for my unemployment application? I don't have access to that old email anymore. Will this cause problems with my verification or delay my benefits? I've been waiting on payments for 3 weeks already.

The email addresses don't need to match. ID.me is a separate verification system from the NY unemployment portal. What matters is that your legal name, DOB, SSN, and other identifying information match across both systems. I went through this in February when my account needed verification - used completely different emails for NYSDOL and ID.me with no issues. Just make sure all your personal details are consistent.

•Thank you! That's such a relief. I was worried I'd have to somehow recover my old email account.

While the email addresses don't need to match, it's important that all your identity verification information is correct. I had to use ID.me back in January because my account was flagged for verification. The most important thing is that your legal name, date of birth, address, and SSN match exactly with what's on your unemployment application. If you're having trouble getting through after verification, I'd recommend trying to reach a claims specialist directly. I wasted two weeks trying to get through on the regular line before using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have this callback service that got me connected to an agent in about 30 minutes when I was dealing with verification issues. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. It saved me from waiting another 2-3 weeks for my payments.

•I'm going to try the verification with my current email based on everyone's advice. If I have trouble getting through afterward, I might check out that service. I've already been waiting too long for these payments.

I work with unemployment claims, and I can confirm that the email addresses do not need to match. ID.me is a third-party identity verification service that works with NYSDOL but is independent. The critical information that must match is your: 1. Legal name (exactly as it appears on your ID) 2. Date of birth 3. Social Security Number 4. Address information However, if you're experiencing a 3-week delay in payments, this might be related to something besides the ID.me verification. Once verification is complete, benefits typically process within 3-5 business days. I'd recommend checking your payment history and messages in your NYSDOL account to see if there are other issues flagged on your claim.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation. There's a message in my account saying "waiting for identity verification" so I think that's the holdup. Hopefully completing the ID.me process will resolve it.

The emails DON'T have to match!!! But make sure EVERYTHING else matches EXACTLY or you'll end up in identity verification hell like I did. I spent 5 WEEKS trying to get my benefits because I put my middle initial on my unemployment application but my full middle name was on my driver's license I used for ID.me. The system is SO picky about these things. Also if your verification fails for ANY reason, they'll make you wait again and potentially lock your account. My advice: triple check all your info before submitting!!

when i did my id.me in march i used a completely different email than my unemployment account email. worked fine but the verification took like 4 days to process on the unemployment side after i did the id.me stuff. just make sure all your personal info matches exactly.

•Thanks for sharing your experience! 4 days isn't too bad - I've already waited 3 weeks so a few more days is manageable.

One additional tip: After completing your ID.me verification, take a screenshot of the confirmation page. Sometimes there's a disconnection between the ID.me system and NYSDOL's system. If you have proof that you completed verification, it can help if you need to call and speak with an agent about continuing payment delays.

•That's really smart - I'll definitely take screenshots of everything. Thanks for the advice!

another thing nobody mentioned - after u do the id.me thing u might need to log back into ur unemployment account and look for a button that says something like "link id.me verification" or "confirm identity verification" to finish the process. i almost missed that step

•Oh wow, thanks for mentioning that! I would have definitely missed that step. Will make sure to check for it after verification.

Just wanted to update that I checked with my cousin who works at the DOL call center - she confirmed emails don't need to match, but there IS an important step after ID.me verification. You need to go back to your unemployment account and there should be a button to confirm/link your ID.me verification. If you don't see that button within 24 hours after completing ID.me, that's when you should call. And that's when most people get stuck in the phone loop.

is anyone else having problems with the ID.me facial recognition thing? it keeps saying "face not detected" even though I'm right in front of the camera with good lighting. this whole system is so frustrating!!!

UPDATE: I completed the ID.me verification using my current email and it worked fine! The system asked me to verify my phone number, upload my driver's license, and do a video selfie. The whole process took about 15 minutes. Now I'm waiting to see if/when my unemployment payments will start coming through. Thank you everyone for your help!

•Great to hear! Remember to check your NYSDOL account in 24-48 hours for that confirmation/linking step some people mentioned. That's often the final step to get your payments flowing again.
