Confused about waiting week date on my ny unemployment claim

Filed for unemployment back in July after getting laid off from my construction job. I started claiming weekly benefits and managed to certify for 3 weeks total. When I check my payment history, I notice it says '9/15/2023 for unpaid waiting week processed' - is this normal? I thought the waiting week was supposed to be the first week after filing. The dates aren't matching up with when I actually filed. Anyone else see something similar on their account? I'm worried something's wrong with my claim.

Yeah thats normal. The waiting week is the first week you claim but it shows up with a different date in the system. The date you're seeing is just when they actually processed it in their system, not when you served the waiting week. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks for clarifying! The different dates were really throwing me off. So even though I filed in July, it makes sense that the system would show September as the processing date?

I had the same issue! The dates are SUPER confusing. My waiting week showed up like 6 weeks after I actually served it πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Yep totally normal. The NY unemployment system runs on some ancient tech that makes everything more confusing than it needs to be lol

After months of trying to get through to someone at ny unemployment about a similar issue, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent on the phone within an hour. Talking to an agent got my benefits situation cleared up in one call - it was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait is this for real? ive been trying to call for weeks and nobody ever picks up... how does it even work?

0 coins

Yeah its 100% real. They basically call the unemployment office for you and stay on hold, then when someone actually picks up, they transfer the call to your phone. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 3 weeks straight with no luck.

sounds too good to be true... another miracle solution πŸ™„ anyone else actually try this thing?

I actually used it last week after seeing it mentioned here. Got through to someone in about 40 mins when I had been trying for DAYS. They just call and wait on hold for you then connect you when a real person answers.

Another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lmao. But if it works I might need to try it myself...

0 coins

Listen, I was just as doubtful. But after 3 weeks of non-stop calling and getting nowhere, I was ready to try anything. It worked exactly as advertised - they called, stayed on hold, then connected me when someone answered. My issue got resolved in that one call.

the date is just when they processed it in their system, not when u actually served the waiting week. its normal. the system is stupid and confusing AF but thats how it works. ur good πŸ‘

The waiting week is their way of cheating you out of one week of benefits!!! They make u wait a week before they start paying u and that week you NEVER get paid for. Such a scam. And yes the date in the system is just when they processed it not when u actually waited.

β€’

Preach!!! πŸ‘ They're literally stealing a week of benefits from every single person who files. It's highway robbery!

β€’

Its not a scam, its literally how the system is designed. All states have waiting periods, not just NY. Its so people dont file for unemployment if they're only going to be out of work for a week.

β€’

Well the DESIGN is a scam then! Why should I lose a week of benefits when I paid into the system just like everyone else?? Makes no sense.

I've been dealing with NY unemployment for years (seasonal worker) and here's what I know for sure: The waiting week is the first week you claim, but you don't get paid for it. The date you see in the system (9/15/2023 in your case) is just the administrative date when they processed it in their system, not when you actually served the waiting week. The system shows weird dates all the time - it's their backend processing dates, not the actual weeks you claimed. As long as you're getting paid for the weeks after your waiting week, you're fine. If you're still concerned, I'd recommend getting in touch with a live agent who can check your specific claim. The fastest way I've found is through claimyr.com - they'll call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration. Don't stress too much about the dates showing in the system - focus more on whether you're receiving the correct amount for the correct number of weeks!

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! This makes a lot more sense now. I'll check if I'm getting the right payments for the weeks after the waiting period.

Don't trust anything you see on the NY unemployment website. The whole thing is held together with duct tape and prayers. Call and speak to a human to confirm everything is correct with your claim.

Any tips on the best time to call? I've been trying for days but can never get through.

Try using claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold for you and call when an agent picks up. Otherwise, call right when they open at 8am or try during lunch hours when most people aren't calling.

The dates in the system rarely match up with reality. Welcome to the nightmare that is NY unemployment! πŸ™ƒ

They're running that whole system on some computer from 1982 I swear

Not to be that guy, but you might want to double-check your effective date of claim. If you filed in July but the waiting week says September, it's possible your claim didn't actually start when you thought it did. This happened to me and I lost out on like 6 weeks of benefits because I didn't realize my claim had the wrong effective date.

Lucy Taylor

β€’

Oh shoot, I didn't even think about that. How do I check the effective date?

Zoey Bianchi

β€’

It should be on your monetary determination letter. If you can't find it, def call and ask - this is something you want to get fixed ASAP if there's an issue.

0 coins

THIS!!! The same thing happened to me and I lost 4 weeks of benefits. Definitely worth checking!

the date isn't what matters, what matters is whether ur receiving payments for the weeks AFTER the waiting week. check if those are coming through correctly

From my experience, the date shown for the waiting week is just when they finalized your claim in the system. As long as you're getting payments for the weeks you've claimed since (minus that first week), you should be good.

yup this ⬆️ The system shows administrative processing dates, not the actual week dates.

My unpaid waiting week had a date from like 3 weeks after i filed πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Its just when they processed it in the system. Dont stress bout it unless ur not getting paid for the other weeks

I went through the exact same confusion when I first filed! The waiting week date showing up as 9/15/2023 when you filed in July is completely normal - it's just their internal processing date, not when you actually served your waiting week. The system basically batches these administrative updates and assigns random processing dates that don't correspond to reality. What you should focus on is making sure you're getting paid for all the weeks AFTER your waiting week. If you certified for 3 weeks total and got paid for 2 of them (minus the first unpaid waiting week), then everything is working correctly. The NY unemployment system is notorious for showing confusing dates that don't match up with when things actually happened. If you want peace of mind though, I'd recommend calling to confirm everything looks right on your claim. The phone lines are brutal but you can try calling right at 8am when they open, or use a service like claimyr.com that will wait on hold for you and connect you when an agent picks up.

This is super helpful, thank you! I was getting really anxious about those mismatched dates but it sounds like that's just how their ancient system works. I did get paid for 2 out of my 3 certified weeks so that checks out. Might still call just to be 100% sure everything's on track, especially after reading about people having issues with their effective claim dates.

β€’

@Sara Hellquiem exactly this! I had the same panic when I first saw those weird dates. The system is so confusing but as long as you re'getting your payments it means everything is working. I d'definitely recommend double-checking your effective claim date like someone mentioned above though - that s'where the real issues can happen if something got messed up during filing.

0 coins

I had this exact same panic when I first saw my waiting week date! Filed in June but my waiting week showed a date in August - made no sense at all. But like everyone else is saying, it's just when their system processed the administrative stuff, not when you actually served your waiting week. The NY unemployment system runs on what feels like technology from the stone age and nothing ever makes sense date-wise. As long as you're getting paid for the weeks after your waiting week, you're golden. I've been through this whole process twice now and those backend processing dates are always random and confusing. If you're still worried about it though, definitely worth calling to double-check everything looks right on your claim. The phone system is a nightmare but at least you'll have peace of mind knowing everything is set up correctly!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who's been through this twice. I was starting to worry that something major was wrong with my claim when I saw that September date, but it sounds like their system just assigns random processing dates that have nothing to do with reality. I think I'll take everyone's advice and call just to make sure my effective claim date is correct - better safe than sorry!

I'm dealing with the same exact thing right now! Filed in August but my waiting week shows a date from October. I was totally freaking out thinking they messed up my claim somehow, but after reading all these responses it seems like their system just shows random processing dates that don't match reality at all. The NY unemployment system is seriously the most confusing thing I've ever dealt with. I've been getting my regular weekly payments though, so I guess that's what actually matters. Still might try calling just to double-check everything is correct with my claim - better to be paranoid than miss out on benefits! Thanks everyone for explaining how this works, you probably saved me hours of stress wondering if something was wrong πŸ˜…

Same here! I was literally losing sleep over those mismatched dates thinking I'd somehow messed up my filing. It's crazy how many people go through this exact same panic with the NY system. At least we're all in this confusing boat together! Definitely smart to call and verify everything - I'm planning to do the same thing. Better to spend an hour on hold than worry you're missing out on weeks of benefits.
