PA UC says it's my 'waiting week' on my 8th certification - what's going on?

I'm so confused right now. I've been filing my biweekly claims for almost 4 months (so this is like my 8th certification), but when I filed today the system suddenly said this is my 'waiting week' and I won't get paid. How is this possible?? I thought the waiting week was only for your first claim? My benefit year isn't over yet and nothing has changed with my employment status. Has anyone else had their waiting week randomly appear after months of receiving benefits? I really need this money for rent next week and can't afford a surprise non-payment.

No, that's what's weird! I'm still in the same benefit year that started in January 2025. I didn't file anything new or different - just my regular biweekly claim like always. The system never gave me any messages about filing a new claim either.

This sounds like there might be an issue with your benefit year. Even though you think you're in the same benefit year, the system might have triggered a new one for some reason. Here's what could be happening: 1. Your original claim might have been closed due to earnings reported 2. There might be an open issue that triggered a re-evaluation of your claim 3. The system could have a glitch where it's treating your continuing claim as a new one I'd recommend contacting PA UC immediately to get clarification before your next filing date. What did your confirmation page say exactly? Did it specifically use the term "waiting week"?

Thanks for the help! Yes, it specifically said "waiting week" and that I wouldn't receive payment for this week. I didn't report any earnings since I'm still unemployed. I'll try calling them tomorrow, but we all know how impossible that is. 😫

The SAME EXACT THING just happened to me last month!!! I was on my 6th claim and suddenly got a "waiting week" message. I called and called for DAYS and finally got through. Turns out they had automatically applied for a new benefit year for me because I had some W2 wages from a side gig I did months ago. The stupid system created a new claim without even telling me!!!! You HAVE TO call them to fix this - they reset my claim back to the original one and I got paid for that week eventually.

The UC system is notorious for doing weird things like this. Most likely what's happening is there was some kind of automatic processing in your claim that triggered a new benefit year or program switch. Try checking your claim status online - go to the dashboard and look at your claim summary. Does it show a different benefit year start date than before? Also check if you got any messages in your dashboard inbox. Sometimes they send notices but don't email you about them. If you reported any work at all, even just a few hours, that might have triggered this. Did you report any work in the last few weeks?

Just checked my dashboard and everything looks the same as before - same benefit year date from January. No new messages either. I haven't reported any work at all since I started claiming - been completely unemployed the whole time. This makes no sense!

I had a similar issue and spent 3 days trying to get through on the phone with no luck. I finally used Claimyr.com to connect with an agent and got it resolved in one call. They have a system that connects you directly to a UC rep, bypassing the busy signals. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 showing how it works. In my case, it turned out my claim had been flagged for quarterly review which triggered the system to incorrectly apply a waiting week. The agent removed it right away once I explained the situation.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've heard of Claimyr before but never tried it. At this point I'll try anything because I've already called 23 times today with no luck. Will check out that video.

Yeah, I checked - there's nothing new in my inbox. Just the same old messages from when I first filed.

Another possibility is that you unintentionally answered one of the biweekly questions differently than usual. For example, if you accidentally indicated you were able and available for only part of the week, or if you answered "yes" to any questions about starting school, training, or relocating, the system might have triggered a re-evaluation. I'd recommend checking your claim status daily while trying to reach a representative. Sometimes these issues resolve themselves within 2-3 business days if it was just a processing delay. But definitely keep trying to reach someone by phone.

I got through to PA UC once by calling right at 7:59 AM when they first open. You have to time it perfectly, but it worked for me!

UPDATE: I FINALLY got through to someone! Turns out it was a system glitch because my claim had hit exactly 26 weeks total (counting the weeks I didn't claim when I briefly had a job in February). The rep said sometimes when claims hit certain milestones, the system automatically does a review and can incorrectly apply a waiting week during that process. She removed the waiting week designation and said my payment should process normally within 2-3 business days. She also mentioned they're seeing this happen more frequently lately and are working on a fix. So if this happens to anyone else, keep calling until you get through - it's definitely an error they can fix! Thanks everyone for your help!

THIS is why I tell everyone to DOCUMENT EVERYTHING with PA UC! Take screenshots of every confirmation page, write down what questions you answered and how. The system makes so many mistakes and then YOU have to prove what happened!
