Confused about ny unemployment - just filed new claim and balance went to $0?
I filed a new unemployment claim about 2 weeks ago after my previous benefit year ended. When I logged in yesterday to check my account, I noticed I have a totally new BYE date (now showing April 2024), but my available balance has dropped to $0! Is this normal? I thought the system would show my new weekly benefit amount and total balance by now. It's been over 14 days since I submitted everything. The website says I'm approved for a new benefit year but showing zero dollars available. Anyone else experience this? Do I need to call someone or just wait longer?

Yes thats normal. When you file a new claim, the system needs to process it and determine your new benefit amount based on your recent work history. It usually takes 2-3 weeks after approval for the money to actually show up in your account. Keep certifying each week even with the $0 balance showing.

•Thanks for the reassurance. Any idea how much longer I should wait before getting concerned? Today marks exactly 17 days since I filed.

•I'd give it until at least the 3 week mark. The system is soooo slow these days. But if you hit day 21 with no update, then yeah maybe time to worry a bit.

•lol 21 days... I waited almost 6 weeks for mine to update last year. The system is completely broken 🤮

I was in this exact situation last month! Tried calling for days with no luck, always got disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at unemployment after being on hold forever. Talking to a real agent got my benefits fixed in minutes - best decision I made! Check out what it's about: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•100% worked for me! I was skeptical too but after 3 weeks of trying to call myself and getting nowhere, I was desperate. The service called and waited on hold, then connected me directly to an agent who fixed my claim in like 10 minutes.

•another day another scam 🙄 nice try

•Not a scam at all! They don't touch your benefits or ask for any personal info. They just get you past the impossible phone system. My payment was stuck for weeks until I talked to that agent.

The NY unemployment system is such garbage. I've been dealing with them for months and it's always something. One time my account showed $0, then suddenly had money, then went back to $0 again. Their computer system was designed by monkeys I swear.

Give it a few more days. When I filed my new claim in December, it took exactly 19 days for my new balance to appear. The first week it showed $0 I freaked out too, but everything eventually updated automatically. Just make sure you keep certifying even when the balance shows nothing.

•Thanks for sharing your timeline - that's helpful to know! Did you have to call them at all during that process?

•Nope, never had to call. It just updated on its own. The only thing I did was continue to certify each week.

Let me break down what's happening here based on my experience (went through this twice): When you file a new claim after your benefit year ends, the system does a complete reset. Your BYE date updates right away, but the monetary determination takes longer. During this period, your balance shows $0 because they're recalculating your benefits based on your most recent employment history. Here's what to do: 1. Keep certifying weekly even while showing $0 2. Check your message inbox for a monetary determination letter 3. Be patient for about 2-3 weeks If after 3 weeks you still see $0 and haven't received a determination letter, THEN you need to contact them. Don't waste time trying to call the regular number - it's impossible to get through. Use claimyr.com which will wait on hold and connect you with an agent when one is available. The system is frustrating but once your new monetary determination is processed, they'll backpay for the weeks you certified during the waiting period.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I haven't received any determination letter yet in my inbox, so I guess I'm still in the waiting period.

•I can confirm this is accurate. I went through the same thing in February.

•Oh no, that's what I'm afraid of. Did you eventually get backpaid for those 5 weeks?

this happens to everyone, dont worry. the system has to verify ur wages from the base period before it sets ur new benefit amount. Just wait like 3 weeks and if nothing changes then worry

Are you seeing any pending payments when you look at your payment history? Sometimes the balance shows $0 but you still have payments being processed.

Kara Yoshida
•No pending payments showing up either. Payment history just shows my last payment from my previous benefit year.

Check if you received a monetary determination letter in your online account inbox. It should tell you your new weekly benefit amount based on your past earnings. If you don't see that letter after 2 weeks, something might be wrong.

•Just checked again and no determination letter yet. Should I be concerned?

•Give it a few more days, but if you hit 3 weeks with no letter, definitely reach out to them. The determination letter is key.

Wait another week. Same thing happened to me last month. Took about 24 days total from filing to seeing my new balance and WBA. The system is just super slow right now.

Have u tried logging out and back in? Sometimes the system glitches and doesn't display ur correct balance. Also try clearing ur browser cache and cookies before logging in again.

•Yeah, tried that several times and even used a different browser. Still showing $0 unfortunately.

My experience with NY unemployment: nothing works right the first time, everything takes twice as long as they say, and the only way to fix anything is to actually talk to a human... which is basically impossible unless you have superhuman patience or use a service to get through the phone lines.

•Facts 💯 I spent three entire days redialing their number like a maniac before I gave up and used claimyr.com - had an agent on the phone in 2 hours who fixed everything.

•The system is deliberately designed to be difficult. They hope people will just give up trying.

When did you last work? Remember that to qualify for a new benefit year, you need to have worked and earned at least 10 times your weekly benefit amount since your previous claim. If you haven't worked enough, your balance might stay at $0.

•I worked for about 6 months between my claims and definitely earned more than 10x my previous WBA. That shouldn't be the issue.

•Ok good, just checking! That eliminates one possible problem.

i had EXACTLY this issue back in january! what happened was they needed wage verification from an employer that didn't respond. once i called and explained, they pushed it through manually. def dont wait too long to call if it doesn't update soon

Try checking your claim status through the automated phone system instead of the website. Sometimes it has more updated info than what shows online. Call 888-581-5812 and follow the prompts.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed my new claim 3 weeks ago and still showing $0 balance even though I got the new BYE date. It's so frustrating because you don't know if you should wait longer or if something is actually wrong. I've been certifying every week like everyone says to do, but it's nerve-wracking seeing that zero balance. Really hoping it updates soon because I'm running out of savings. Thanks for posting this - at least I know I'm not the only one dealing with this mess!

•I'm so glad you posted this too! It's really reassuring to know we're not alone in this frustrating situation. Three weeks feels like forever when you're watching your savings disappear. Have you checked your online inbox for any determination letters yet? I'm still waiting for mine after 17 days. Hopefully both of our claims get processed soon - this waiting game is brutal!

•Yes, I've been checking my inbox obsessively but no determination letter yet either! It's so stressful not knowing if this is normal processing time or if there's actually a problem. I keep seeing people mention that claimyr service to get through to an agent - might be worth trying if we don't see updates in the next few days. Hang in there! 🤞

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! Filed my new claim about 16 days ago and my balance is still showing $0 even though I got approved with a new benefit year end date. It's so stressful not knowing if this is normal or if something went wrong with my application. I've been certifying every week like everyone suggests, but seeing that zero balance is really anxiety-inducing when bills are piling up. Has anyone here had success with just waiting it out versus calling? I'm torn between being patient and worrying that there's actually a problem that needs to be fixed. Thanks for posting this - it helps to know others are going through the same thing!

•I totally understand that anxiety! I'm actually in a very similar boat - filed my new claim 2.5 weeks ago and still seeing $0 balance despite getting the new BYE date. From what I've read in this thread, it seems like 2-3 weeks is pretty normal for the system to process everything, but some people have waited even longer. The key thing seems to be whether you get that monetary determination letter in your inbox - that's apparently when you know your new benefit amount has been calculated. I'd say if you hit the 3 week mark with no letter, that's when it might be worth trying to contact them. In the meantime, definitely keep certifying! Hoping both our claims get processed soon 🤞

I'm in the same boat as many of you here! Filed my new claim about 19 days ago and still showing $0 balance, but I did get the updated BYE date. The waiting is honestly the worst part because you never know if it's just slow processing or if there's actually an issue that needs attention. I've been religiously certifying every week even with the zero showing, and checking my inbox daily for that monetary determination letter everyone mentions. Still nothing yet! Reading through all these responses is actually really helpful - sounds like anywhere from 2-4 weeks seems to be the norm, which is longer than I expected but at least gives me a realistic timeline. I think I'll give it until the full 3 week mark before considering other options. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, it definitely helps with the anxiety of not knowing what's normal!

•I'm right there with you! Just hit day 18 myself and seeing all these stories makes me feel so much better about the timeline. It's crazy how stressful that $0 balance is when you're used to seeing your benefit amount there. I've been doing the same thing - certifying weekly and obsessively checking for that determination letter. At least we know we're all going through this together! Hopefully we'll start seeing some movement in our accounts over the next week or so. The waiting game is brutal but sounds like it's unfortunately just part of the process with NY unemployment.
