Understanding NY's Unemployment Waiting Week: When Will I Get My First Payment After $0.00 Week Ending 10/29/2023?

Just got my first unemployment claim approved in New York. Looking at my payment history I see a waiting week for $0.00. According to my payment history screen: Payment History Week Ending Total Amount Net Amount Effective Days Release Date Type 10/31/2023 $0.00 $0.00 4 11/18/2023 Waiting week I'm really confused about when I'll actually get paid. I can see the "Waiting week" designation and that I had 4 effective days, but the total amount and net amount are both $0.00 with a release date of 11/18/2023. The screen also shows some definitions under "Unemployment Insurance Terms" and "Payment History Terms" including: - Benefit Year Ending Date: The Benefit Year Ending date (BYE) is the date your unemployment insurance claim ends and you can no longer collect benefits on that claim. - Total Amount: The benefit amount to which you are entitled for the week. Does everyone have this waiting week where you don't get paid? When should I expect my first actual payment with money? Anyone know what days NY unemployment normally pays out after this waiting week period is over? Will my next payment include this week's amount retroactively or is this first week just lost?

The waiting week is normal, everyone has to do it. Its basically a week you claim but dont get paid for. After that, you'll start getting your weekly benefits. NY usually deposits on Tuesday or Wednesday depending on your bank

Hey guys i was stuck trying to reach them forever but found this website claimyr.com that calls and waits on hold for you then connects you when someone picks up. costs $20 but totally worth it. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Listen up everyone - here's the complete breakdown of how NY unemployment payments work: First week is ALWAYS unpaid (waiting week). After that, payments follow this schedule: - Claim your week on Sunday-Saturday - Payment processes Monday night - Deposit hits Tuesday-Wednesday If you need to fix anything or have questions, good luck getting through on the phone. Save yourself the headache and use claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold and connect you to an agent. DONT forget to claim each week, even the waiting week. Set a reminder on your phone. The system is annoying but once you learn the ropes its pretty straightforward

Thanks everyone for the helpful info! Just to clarify - so after this waiting week (10/29), my next weekly claim should actually have money in it? And @Ravi Choudhury that breakdown is super helpful. I'm gonna set up that phone reminder right now so I don't miss any weekly claims. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences, makes this whole process way less stressful 🙏

Yes exactly! After your waiting week ends, your next weekly claim should have your actual benefit amount. Just make sure you keep certifying every week on time. The waiting week is basically NY's way of making sure you're actually unemployed before they start paying out. Once you get past that first hurdle, payments should be pretty consistent as long as you stay on top of your weekly certifications. Good luck! 🤞

Thanks @Javier Torres! That makes total sense about the waiting week being a verification thing. Really appreciate everyone's help here - this community is so much more helpful than trying to navigate the DOL website alone 😊

Just went through this same situation last month! Your waiting week is totally normal - it's basically NY's way of making sure you're legitimately unemployed before they start paying out benefits. After that $0.00 week ending 10/29, your next weekly certification should show your actual benefit amount. The key thing is to keep certifying every single week even during the waiting week - missing even one can mess up your whole claim. I get my deposits on Tuesday mornings with Bank of America, so you should see yours within a few days of certifying. The waiting week amount is gone forever though, you don't get it back later. Stay consistent with your weekly claims and you'll be good to go! 👍

@Morita Montoya this is exactly what I needed to hear! I was worried I d'somehow messed up my claim when I saw that $0.00 amount. Good to know the waiting week is just standard procedure and that I should start seeing real payments after this. Really appreciate you confirming that the waiting week amount is gone forever too - better to know that upfront than expect it later. Thanks for the Bank of America timing info as well, helps me know when to expect mine! 🙌

Hey @Amina Sy! I just went through this exact same thing a few weeks ago. That waiting week with $0.00 is completely normal - everyone has to do it when they first file. It's basically NY's way of confirming you're actually unemployed before they start sending payments. Your next weekly certification after 10/29 should show your actual benefit amount. I bank with TD and usually get my deposits on Tuesday around 6am. The frustrating part is that waiting week money is gone forever, you don't get it back retroactively. But once you get past it, payments should be consistent as long as you keep certifying every week. Don't skip any weekly claims even if something seems off - that can really mess things up! You should see your first real payment within a few days of your next certification 💪

@Isabella Ferreira Thanks so much for sharing your experience! It s'really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this. I was definitely worried when I saw that $0.00 but now I understand it s'just part of the process. TD Bank Tuesday at 6am - that s'super helpful timing info! I ll'make sure to keep up with all my weekly certifications. This community has been amazing, way better than trying to figure this out from the DOL website alone 🙏

Just wanted to add my experience to help others going through this! I had the exact same $0.00 waiting week when I first filed. That week is basically NY DOL's way of making sure you're legitimately unemployed - think of it as a "probation period" before they start paying out. After my waiting week ended, I started getting my regular weekly benefit amount. I use Capital One and typically see deposits hit Wednesday mornings around 8am. The important thing is to NEVER miss your weekly certification, even during that waiting week - the system is really strict about consistency. And unfortunately yeah, that first week's money is just gone, you won't get it back later. But once you're past it and in the rhythm of weekly claims, the payments are pretty reliable. Hang in there, it gets easier once you understand the process! 💯

@AstroAce This is super helpful! I'm brand new to unemployment and was totally confused about that $0.00 week. Your explanation about it being like a "probation period" makes so much sense. Capital One Wednesday 8am - good to know! I'll definitely make sure not to miss any weekly certifications. It's frustrating that the first week is just lost money but at least now I know what to expect. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, it really helps us newcomers navigate this whole process! 😊

I'm going through this exact same thing right now! Just filed my claim and saw that dreaded $0.00 waiting week. It's so confusing when you're already stressed about being unemployed and then the system makes you wait even longer for your first payment. Reading everyone's experiences here is really reassuring though - sounds like this is just how NY does things and once you get past that first week, payments should be consistent. I'm with Chase so hopefully I'll see my first real payment on Tuesday like @Natasha Ivanova mentioned. Thanks everyone for sharing your timelines and bank deposit info, it really helps to know what to expect! 🤞

@Roger Romero I totally feel you on the stress part! Being unemployed is already overwhelming and then seeing that $0.00 just adds to the anxiety. But everyone here has been so helpful - it s'clear this waiting week is just standard NY procedure. Chase should definitely get you paid on Tuesday mornings based on what others have shared. The hardest part is just getting through that first waiting week, but after that it sounds like the system works pretty smoothly. We got this! 💪

Just wanted to share my recent experience to help others! I went through the exact same thing - saw that $0.00 waiting week and panicked thinking I did something wrong with my application. But it's totally standard! After my waiting week ended, I started getting my full weekly benefit amount deposited every Tuesday with Wells Fargo (usually around 2-3am). The key things I learned: 1) Never skip your weekly certification even during the waiting week, 2) Set up direct deposit if you haven't already to avoid delays, and 3) That first week's money is gone forever but don't let it stress you out. Once you get into the rhythm of weekly claims, the system actually works pretty well. For anyone just starting out, the NY DOL website has a payment calendar that shows when benefits are processed each week - super helpful for planning! Hang in there everyone, it gets much easier after that first hurdle! 🙏

@Reginald Blackwell This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I m'just starting my claim process and was dreading that waiting week situation. Your tip about the NY DOL payment calendar is gold - I had no idea that existed! Setting up direct deposit is definitely on my to-do list now. It s'so reassuring to hear from people who ve'been through this recently and can confirm it all works out in the end. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all these practical tips! 🙌

Just wanted to add another data point for everyone! I'm currently going through this same waiting week situation. Filed my claim two weeks ago and that first $0.00 week was definitely confusing at first. But after reading everyone's experiences here, it's clear this is just how NY handles things. I'm with PNC Bank and based on what others have shared, I should expect my first real payment to hit around Tuesday or Wednesday after I complete my next weekly certification. The waiting week definitely stings when you're already dealing with job loss stress, but it's good to know it's not a mistake or system error - just standard procedure. Thanks to everyone who shared their bank timing info, it really helps with planning and budgeting during this transition! 🙏

@KylieRose Thanks for sharing your timeline! I'm in a similar boat - just filed my claim last week and seeing that $0.00 waiting week was definitely a shock at first. It's so helpful to hear from people who are going through this at the same time. PNC Tuesday/Wednesday timing sounds consistent with what everyone else is reporting. The job loss stress + waiting week combo is rough but this thread has been a lifesaver for understanding the process. Hope your first real payment comes through smoothly! 💪

Just want to echo what everyone's saying here - that waiting week is definitely standard procedure! I went through the same thing about 6 months ago and remember being so confused when I saw $0.00. It's basically NY's way of confirming you're actually unemployed before they start cutting checks. After that waiting week, I started getting my regular payments every Tuesday morning with Citibank (usually around 5-6am). One thing I wish someone had told me earlier - download the NY DOL mobile app if you haven't already. It makes checking your payment status and doing weekly certifications so much easier than using their clunky website. And definitely set up those weekly reminders! I missed one certification early on and it delayed everything by like 2 weeks while I had to call and fix it. The phone lines are brutal so avoid that headache if you can. You're almost through the hardest part though - once you get that first real payment, it becomes pretty routine! 💙

@Sean Doyle That mobile app tip is clutch! I ve'been struggling with their website and had no idea there was an app. Definitely downloading it right now. The weekly reminder thing is so smart too - I can already tell this is the kind of thing I d'totally forget about and then regret later. Thanks for sharing your Citibank timing info as well, seems like most people are getting deposits Tuesday mornings regardless of their bank. Really appreciate all the practical advice from everyone who s'been through this process! 🙏

I'm dealing with this exact same situation right now! Just saw my first waiting week show up as $0.00 and was totally panicking that I messed something up on my application. Reading through everyone's experiences here is such a relief - sounds like this is just standard NY procedure and not an error on my part. I'm with Ally Bank so I'm hoping to see my first real payment hit sometime Tuesday/Wednesday after my next weekly certification. The timing everyone shared for different banks is super helpful for planning purposes. It's definitely frustrating to have that extra wait when you're already stressed about being unemployed, but at least now I know what to expect. Thanks to everyone who took the time to share their experiences - this thread has been way more informative than anything I could find on the official DOL website! 🙏

@Zachary Hughes Don t'worry, you definitely didn t'mess up your application! I just went through this same exact panic when I saw that $0.00 waiting week pop up. It s'so confusing when you re'already dealing with unemployment stress and then the system throws this curveball at you. But everyone here has confirmed it s'just how NY does things - like a mandatory probation "week before" they start actual payments. Ally Bank should definitely follow the same Tuesday/Wednesday pattern everyone else mentioned. The DOL website is honestly pretty terrible for explaining this stuff, so grateful for communities like this where people share real experiences. You re'almost through the hardest part! 💪

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone else going through this! I literally just went through the exact same thing last month - saw that $0.00 waiting week and immediately thought I had screwed something up with my application. But it's totally normal! NY makes everyone do a waiting week before they start paying out benefits. After that week ended, I started getting my regular weekly benefit amount deposited every Tuesday morning with US Bank (usually hits around 4am). The most important thing is to keep doing your weekly certifications even during that $0.00 week - if you skip it, it can mess up your whole claim timeline. And yeah, that first week's money is gone forever, but once you get past it the system works pretty smoothly. Set up those weekly reminders on your phone because missing even one certification can cause major headaches with their phone system. You're almost through the hardest part - hang in there! 💪

@Olivia Martinez This is exactly what I needed to hear! I m'literally in the middle of my waiting week right now and have been so anxious about whether I did everything correctly. Seeing that $0.00 amount was definitely panic-inducing, but hearing from so many people who went through the exact same thing is incredibly reassuring. US Bank Tuesday 4am - that s'super helpful timing info! I ve'already set up those weekly reminders on my phone after reading everyone s'advice here. It s'frustrating that the first week is just lost money, but at least I know what to expect now. Thanks for sharing your experience and the encouragement - this community has been a lifesaver for navigating this confusing process! 🙏
